Great review Chris!!! I have the heavier Captain's Choice copper bowl that I use regularly, and I have 3 of the Timeless bowls, 2 blue and a grey, and they all work amazingly well. I also have a PAA scuttle as well, but only use that for special occasions.

Chris I really appreciate how you think outside the box and offer videos on the different aspects of our shave den items. Great minds think alike! After my wife accidentally broke my ceramic scuttle, I bought the copper Captain’s Choice bowl which quickly became my mainstay. If I am using a brush with a long handle. I may may pull out the Timeless bowl, but otherwise it’s Captain’s Choice! Merry Christmas!

Great insight and information. I have the Timeless and Pereira bowls. I use the Timeless most of the time. You are very right about the Pereira bowl. Stirling makes a great travel bowl also. Lather does not get out of the tall bowls.

Hi Chris. Thank you for doing these comparison/reviews of these shaving bowls. I love my ceramic Captain's Choice lather bowl, but I was looking for a durable travel option. I have used a Corning Ware dessert bowl...it works, but can break if dropped from height.

Pereira is my go to shave bowl, I have the brown one. It does keep some lather in the ridges as you mentioned, I find myself mashing my brushes in there the lazy way to get it out.

Great video! Actually my favorite durable shaving bowl is the small version of the Pereira Shavery Bowl. Has neither brush holder nor handle, but fits right inside the palm of my hand and has also very nice ridges. The material is nicer than the big ones and it is travel friendly. Keep up the great content!

Proraso makes a really good plastic bowl also. I use the timeless however, in that same color you have. Love it. You can get anything to lather in it.

Glad you did this! My favorite is my handmade copper Captain’s choice bowl. I also like my Shash bowl, made from marble. I actually think I started collecting bowls too! lol I have been looking at that Timeless bowl for awhile, your other two choices I am looking at as well. I have a ceramic Captain's Choice bowl and it served me well for many years. Luckily it didn't break. I mainly use my ceramic lancaster bowl. I have a collapsible Stirling dog bowl and it has these tall agitators that make it hard for the brush to reach the lather. My new Tony Dellett 3D Printed bowl is probably my favorite "durable" shaving bowl. I think it could be sanded inside to smooth out those rough ridges on the inside.

Nice video. I have the Perreira Shavery bowl and hold it by the bottom but with my thump through the handle; I find that comfortable. I agree, it does hold onto a bit of soap. I like it but wish I hadn't bought a white one. Merry Christmas, Chris. All the very best to you and your family. 😀

Thank you for making this video. Great review of all these bowls! My favorite is the pereira but i had my eye on the captains choice. I have a ceramic captains choice but i prefer the pereira since it’s more deeper and lather doesn’t come off the edges as much compared to the captains. I wonder if they have a deeper copper captains choice bowl. I might get this copper one now 😆

They don't have a deeper bowl that I'm aware of at CC. That said, I tend to prefer the shorter walls unless they are flared outward like a wok.

I like the PAA plastic travel scuttle. Just went on vacation with it. I like that you can even freeze it for cool shaves. Great price, durable, came with an insulating sleeve, micro fiber bag, and even a sample soap. Steve

@@IAMCDB I agree on the size. I originally bought their porcelain version as my first scuttle, then I dropped it. I then bought a bigger Creative Flame scuttle, as my daily driver and like the larger size. It is big and heavy, but I just lather with it on the sink. I picked up the PAA plastic for travel. I really like it frozen. For me, I like the scuttle heating and chilling function over the larger bowl for the size when traveling.

@@stevem1563 yes sir. The scuttle works great but is slightly narrow at the bottom for my taste. If you have a large brush there's not much room to work with it. I need to talk to Douglas about this and see if he has any interest in making a larger one:)

I only have one durable lather bowl at this time which is the timeless bowl. You said so many good things about that bowl, I just had to have one; you are not wrong about what you said about the bowl, absolutely love mine. Although, I do have my eye on that Captain’s choice copper bowl.

I have Stirling’s shave bowl which comes in various colors. It lightweight, easy to hold & collapes for travel or storage. I paid about $7.00..cant beat the value!

Funny what we value in a lather bowl. For me, it’s avoiding tall walls, I refuse to listen to my brush handle clank off the sides for 2-3 minutes. Looking forward to my delivery of the heavier gauge copper bowl.

Dear Sir, I recently got a timeless bowl. Some other wet shaving KZfaqr guy has a video where he says the ridges on the side of the timeless bowl make a pulling action on the bristles when making circular motions. He therefore recommends only synthetic or non-premium boar brushes for the timeless bowl. I know it must have been a long time since you last used your timeless bowl, but in case you remember, do you think the timeless bowl is safe for badger or premium boar brushes? Thanks.

I got a honeycomb resin bowl from Van Yulay. Really nice with the honeycombs and it seems like it could take a fall, haven't done it yet though. It's $25.

Yes, that's a great bowl. It probably can't survive a drop but it's the same design as the copper more or less.

Hi @IAMCDB.. Merry Christmas !! Your videos are always awesome. A quick question, since I have a thick beard, I like to face lather (boar brush). It exfoliates the skin and works the whiskers quite well. But would you recommend bowl lathering for a better lather and a smoother shave ?

No sir. If your current method works well and makes you happy, stick with it. You can try bowl lathering but use whichever method works best for your individual use case.

Loved the brush for 5 years, but now it’s time to replace it. I like brushes with good back bone due to my beard being hard. I tried the yaqi synthetic, lovely brush, but too soft for me. Is there a badger brush with a good and matching backbone to a boar brush.

How long does the copper bowl retain heat? I'm thinking about getting one. And will you be getting the heavyweight Captain Choice bowl, or are you happy with the size of the one you have now?

I got a Pereira "wood" colored bowl from Westcoastshaving.com during a 20 or 30% off entire site sale they had a couple weeks ago, so I got it for $20 something. Its a great bowl. I've been using the toy surfboard i got with a order of 345 Sharkbite soap to scoop out soap with. I noticed (like you said) that it will hold onto the soapbif i put in in the corners of the ridges, but if I spread the soap only in the flat part of the bottom between the ridges that go up the sides and on top of the ridges in the bottom it doesn't leave any soap. Lol sorry for the long comment! 😅 Have a good one! Steve

You know, that's a good point. I imagine some of the more aggressive ridges might help in breaking in a boar. I don't know that I'd want to go hard with an expensive badger brush though.

I bought a nice ceramic bowl from the Executive Shaving Company, it lasted two weeks before I dropped and shattered it, got a replacement but I’m definitely worried that it’ll happen again. Plastic seems safer for someone clumsy like me haha

Funny story: I had the PAA ceramic scuttle and loved the warm lather. One day, my clumsy ass bumped it off the counter and it shattered. I immediately bought the travel scuttle version from PAA. Still getting awesome warm lathers and it's a lot lighter. I even slammed it against the ground on purpose as soon as I got it.

I've done that at least three times with different glass/pottery type bowls. This is why I use durable bowls now:) I also have that travel scuttle and it's nice as well. It's a little small for my taste in terms of the lathering area but it works well all the same.

I would lean more to the metal bowls I think. I want something conductive so I could put it in hot water or on a heating pad and keep the lather warm. I like the concept of scuttles, but cleaning the hollow where you put the water seems all nut impossible to me so that turns me off. I have some metalworking skills so I will probably end up doing something custom. Until then, just a cheap metal bowl from the store will probably be my go to. 🤷‍♂️

That would be awesome making your own bowl to your own specifications. The cheap ones will certainly do though. A dollar store salsa bowl works well even.

There are lots of good ones. PAA has one that's indestructible but it's a little small.

Nice video. Good recommendations. I suggest you watch the ‘indestructibowl’ video from Geo at Shave Nation. He puts that thing through hell. 😂 hockey stick, bat, etc....great demo

Nice. I know Douglas Smythe has had some videos like that where someone takes his scuttle and does all sorts of stuff to it. They shoot it, run over it etc:)

These are selected based on durability. There are no ceramic or glass bowls in the list as they might not hold up if dropped on tile or maybe bumped in the sink.

ShaveBowl makes a small unbreakable bowl that is a perfect size. Pereira's bowl is too big. You could serve a family size ice cream sundae in that thing. Timeless' bowl should be an inch shorter and straight polypropylene is uninspiring for the price, in my opinion. Good video topic, btw!

I think those copper bowls are sealed in lacquer. If you want to repair it, I guess you need to soak it in lacquer thinner or apply some sort of paint stripper. Then recoat with some food grade lacquer. www.drinkwareessentials.com/remove-lacquer-coating-copper-mugs/ There is a product called protectaclear...might work.
