I think it’s a win. Picked up the EDC1 for the size vs. performance and am happy. The high/low is excellent, with 25 lm low being just right for edc tasks. I can clearly make out specific details at 100 yards and in. My only gripes are that, when activating high mode on/off, it doesn’t reset as quickly as some lights so you end up getting low (I.e., room clearing). The hotspot is tight- not the best for just illuminating your path in front of your feet. That being said, it’s become my preferred EDC light.

I currently carry the edcl2-t. I really wish they would have put the same gas pedal switch on the edc as they did on the edcl. I would love to have the more candela but can’t bring myself to sacrifice the switch for what I use it for.

@@ZRockwell it could be user dependent. I don’t find myself needing the light for longer than 10 seconds or so. Then again, mine is broke in/ lubed enough I can twist it with just my thumb one handed if I needed too. I usually only keep it 1/2 turn out.

Great video Shan. I like my CD MCH EDC dual output but even with an shroud adapter added to the button end I still accidentally find the light turned. I'll have to think about the $30 increased price over the MCH EDC. I'll definitely take a look at the Surefire EDC2-DFT. Keep up the great work and have a great holiday.

I'd say the Modlite Plh-V2 multi-mode would be better suited for EDC. Those surefire lights have too many Candela for EDC...unless your carrying it for SD... and want that extra candela. I think the Plh-V2 has more than enough Candela, but with about double the lumens, and more flood... makes for a much more EDC friendly light. Also, with the new multi-mode...the low is a great usable amount of light, without blinding yourself while trying to do smaller tasks like changing a car tire or what have you. Heck, if there was a blackout, the low would be all you would ever really need to get around. High/Low is definitely needed on an EDC light. Before the multimode head, EDCing a Modlite made very little sense. But now, it really does make a lot of sense. Especially if you are carrying for EDC tasks/ want it to also flex into that SD role you were mentioning in the video. Not sure why candela has made such a rise in the flashlight world as of late, and in certain instances more is good. But for an "edc" light, max candela certainly isn't at the top of my list. I always gravitated towards the PLH-V2 from modlite over the OKW. I own both and never carry the OKW, at 70k candela it was just a bit too narrow of a beam pattern and lower output lumen wise then I'd like on high. Noticeably dimmer then the PLH-v2 when you tried to umbrella a room full of light bouncing it off the ceiling. The surefires with 100k Candela will surely be too much for an EDC for me. I have the HOG as well, and at distance I enjoy using it, but indoors it's not sure enjoyable, I feel like it's got so much candela its super concentrated. Just my .02 for whats its worth. But an 18350 handheld with PLH-v2 multi-mode head is just right for EDC. Extremely capable, for any handheld task you need, with a low mode. All those 100k+ candela lights belong on a long rifle to reach out to 400+ yards. I don't see a point in reaching out quite that far with a handheld, because with the naked eye what are you really going to see? You aren't going to benefit from all of that throw, it's more of a cool factor / novelty / impress people. Again, just my opinion!
@zklnsgng
@zklnsgng 5 ай бұрын
For the surefire its high mode is 2x the run time of a PLHV2 and the low mode is a long aways more 40 something hours. But in low mode PLHV2 has more output. Its a choose your poison really. The EDC2 DFT has plenty of bright spill for me. There is plenty to see for the distance that the surefire can see. Hell your eye can see for miles. This is only a fraction.

Thank you for sharing with good information. Been looking for a long time to try to decide between the phlv2 18650 or the edc2 dft for duty belt use. Haven’t got a clear answer and it’s hard to know really how much candela is needed.I like the higher spill forsure but don’t know if the 100k candelas is justified for duty or edc. You made very good points and I don’t think the naked eye can actually see the beam of 100k candela either. I’m going with the phlv2 18350 for edc and 18650 for duty use. Thanks for the help!
@callofduty60
@callofduty60 5 ай бұрын
@@GearAndGunsI’d highly suggest going with the plhV2 for duty use - 18650 for sure. I carry the 18350 for EDC - but for duty use def want the extra runtime and sustained output the 18650 can provide over the 18350. If you ever find yourself wanting even more, you have the option of buying the HOG body and adapter and throwing the plhV2 head onto it… then you get the benefit of a 21700 battery. (Longer runtime and sustained output) … the con is a larger and heavier tool. Lots of dudes try to say the 100k+ candela is nice to get through tints… but with the plhV2 54k Candela it’s more then enough to light up a car. And no matter what candela you have if they have limo tints… you’re not really gonna get through it. While room clearing I opt for more flood and spill all day… the narrower beam pattern of the 100k+ candela doesn’t spill as well in a room and the room looks dimmer to me while umbrella the light on the ceiling. The plhV2 makes a room look like it’s day time

@@callofduty60 yes sir that’s exactly what I did. Just purchased the 18650 multi mode for duty and 18350 for edc. Found a really nice kydex Molle holster for it too. But I agree. I was trying to think of what I would be able to use 100k for and your right your eye can’t even clearly see that far. Also another good point if you use it in doors it’ll be way too much. I understand through a car window but 54k should be good enough. Only downside is running cr123s could drop the candelas under 50k which I atleast wanted 50k but I still think it’s a good middle. I wish surefire would’ve done something like the cloud defensive mch high candela hand held. It has 80k candelas with 1100 lumens. That’s a better middle ground. But when using cr123s in that light, the drop off is terrible taking you down to 70k and 400 lumens. Definitely not worth it then. Not sure why it’s so hard for companies to find a good middle ground. Like 60-70k with 1,300+ lumens. I appreciate your help and input!

I'd just like to add that it's _not_ just the difference in batteries (18350 vs 18650) but also the head. The EDC1-DFT uses the KF1-B-DFT head & the EDC2-DFT uses the KF2-B-DFT head (same head as the Scout Turbo, but with a low setting). I picked up 2 on eBay from a seller with 10+ that were discounted 35% off (right at $200 each). That deal is still active until the 28th! I plan to build a Dual Fuel Scout Turbo Pro for a Mk18 mod 0 (just need the MH62 body, Z93 screw & Z68 tail cap). The other head is going on an Arisaka Defense 18650 body with their Inline Scout Mount (M-Lok) & Surefire UE tail cap with SR07 remote to mount on a BLK LBL Bipod/forend on my X95. Right now, because SF isn't selling the KF2 heads, this is one way to get one & for not a ton of money, plus the bonus of a low setting. The KF2-B-DFT head on an 18650 battery provides 700 tightly focused lumens for 2.75 hours & 25 navigational lumens for 46.5 hours! I just recently bought an M640DFT Scout Pro Turbo (KF2-A-DFT head) & an M640DF Scout Pro (KE2-DF head). I may simply swap out the KE2 head on 1 of my EDC2s as the DF is mounted on a Benelli M1014 & the KF2's spot looks perfect for typical 00-buck spread out to about 50' or so. ETA: Just checked & that seller still has 23 available for $200.85 ($108.15 off). Snap 'em up while you can!

That seller still has a 30% off sale on his remaining inventory until Dec. 18th. If I could, I'd buy them all. ETA: He still has 11 left @ $216.30 each.

I've always wondered, when you talk about dropoff as it relates to runtime ... Is this related to temperature or battery drain ? Specifically, if it runs at full spec for 30 seconds , and I turn it off , will it run at full spec again after it cools ? Or has the battery been depleted enough that full spec isnt happening no matter how long you wait ?

Lots of really great handhelds on the market now, but SF seems to be on top again. The SF regulation schemes always seem to be excellent. There's no tricks, and they deliver flat output and meet specs. This can't be said about many competitors. I hope they release a version of this light with the classic "gas pedal" switch, or just single-output. That would be a nice upgrade to my EDCL1-T which is my favorite EDC of all time.

Which nitecore has 100k candela and a non proprietary battery?
@metallicarockacion
@metallicarockacion 3 ай бұрын
@htMerauders Just yesterday I went out with an MH25 Pro that has 124,300K candela and when I came back I thought it was a terrible option for an EDC. There is a video about the Nitecore EDC33 which has a high candela and the number #1 complaint was that it should be mainly a floodlight setting because on that light you can change from flood to spot. High candela is terrible for EDC, and nitecores proprietary batteries are way more efficient than generic. This surefire has a 1100 mAh vs a 5K mAh that you find on nitecore. 700 lumens vs 5k lumens that you would get on nitecores. Candela doesn't tell the performance of a flashlight. is just the concentration of any determined lumens. Lumens tells the true performance of a flashlight. If you adjust the same reflector inclination on the 5k lumen output you would have like a 250K candela. Which like I said is not functional for everyday carry. Is functional for a search light in the wilderness. When you have 5000 lumens candela doesn't matter anymore since you have a similar intensity of light but in a wider area. You have much more light.
@MidnughtMerauders
@MidnughtMerauders 3 ай бұрын
Lumens vs candela is shooters choice. I prefer high candela for an EDC. I want the reach when I need it and will bounce the light when I don’t. Candela is a direct reflection of a lights “performance.” It’s an objective and measurable metric which directly pertains to a lights throw. That nitecore mh25 has a huge drop off at the 30 seconds down to 1000 lumens
@metallicarockacion
@metallicarockacion 3 ай бұрын
@@MidnughtMerauders incorrect. Candela is not a direct reflection of performance. Is like saying you can turn up all the way a certain frequency on a speaker's EQ. Independently from the speaker's performance. you could grab any low performance flashlight with low lumens and modify the reflector for a high candela. The same way you could get a low quality EQ and turn a frequency all the way up on cheap speakers. You could get any chinese cheap flashlight and put a high candela. The candela depends on the lumens and the reflector. Nitecore TM39. Old light! Old tech. 562,500 cd, no step down. Candela is a manufacturers level setting they choose. Now, lumens is not a setting they just can calibrate like candela. Lumens is the real amount of light and power they are putting in to it. That in the other hand requires more battery, better circuits, better drivers, better emitters. etc. Candela is just the reflectors inclination unless you use an UHI LED which is the only LED in the industry that throws light concentrated in the center. Every single LED throws light evenly in all directions and you can never have candela if you dont focus that light in the middle with a reflector or a TIR.
@MidnughtMerauders

Candela is a measurable and objective reading. Its performance is measured in throw. Therefore it is absolutely a reflection of performance, perhaps just not the metric you’re interested in.
