As the European football championship football tournament starts in June, the usual countries are favorites; France, England, Germany and Spain. But Europe used to have another favorite; Yugoslavia. For more than 40 years, the communist country used football to keep its population united and elevate itself onto the national stage. By the late 80s, it was considered one of the strongest football sides in Europe when it suddenly and violently disappeared.
Special thanks to Dennis Gudasic, Executive Director of Lokomotiva Zagreb Football Club.
Correction:
01:30 Voice over misguidedly says Yugoslavia is between Europe and Asia, when it should say it is in south and central Europe. I apologize for the mistake.

@@melem7808They are the best from the Balkans, but they lack in player quality depth and population decrease. You can’t play with the same squad 20 years. Not the same quality is coming behind. A Croatian core team filled with the rest Yugoslav states for the Squad and bench would solve that problem. I think after this tournament Croatia will disappear for 5-6 years until they get a new generation. Serbia lost his generation and of the 90s they were never so good again. Bosnia had good years between 2008-2015. They are also gone. 2-3 players of high quality isn’t enough to compete with Germany, Spain, England etc. they have unlimited supply of players and population.

@@brate2725 the problem is players from other Countries would not sit on the bench. We all know what would happen. Kovacic on the bench so that SMS can play. Sit Gvardiol, we feel Milenkovic is more suitable for the time being. The only way it would work is Croatian coach, and Croatian federation deciding on everything. That way Croatia could call up Oblak, Sesko, Elmas, Dedic, Rrahmani, Zhegrova, Vlahovic, Pavlovic, Ilic, Kostic etc. when needed and play them if needed. Otherwise it wouldn't work.

Believe me. Croatia can win a title once in 50 years, but if you want to compete with large nations you need more population. Even 23 million is nearly not enough. Being small countries, with small leagues is a huge disadvantage. Together would be much more depth in quality. That’s lacking in Croatia. They have 4-5 very good player and the rest is Bundesliga average. You need 11-13 players with a good bench. Modric played 2 x times 120 in Qatar with 38 years. That’s not sustainable

As a Croatian its always been bafflingto me to go to different countries and find they don't have a court for football/basketball/handball/whatever around every other corner and even if they do I don't see kids playing there. We used to meet up at 7/8pm every night in summer as kids in front of the church and play sports! Realizing there's people that don't get decent at a sport and do it even up to their fourties' and late fifties is insane to me 😂😂 I don't know what I would do without playing basketball every week at least once. It's such a cultural phenomenon. There's not one Croatian boy I know that doesn't want to and enjoys playing football with his friends EVERY DAY in summer. Plus the ocean. We swim constantly. We move and run and jump constantly. We compete (probably daddy issues but fuck that 😂)!

@@FizzyGajingI'm Croatian and I see the previous comment by Kristian explained it best. Most people go about their lives regularly and don't care where you're from as long as you're decent and respectful. For example, lots of people from Serbia (and other former Yugoslav republics) find work in Croatia during the summer tourist season. And it goes both ways depending on the opportunity of course. A few bad apples on all sides are always going to be there of course, but generally we're in a pretty chill state of things right now. The only exeption being the Serbia-Kosovo relationship as the only tension on the territory (of former Yugoslavia) on national levels. Also, N.Macedonia has its own thing with Greece but I don't count that since it's not an issue with any of the former republics but rather a "third party". And to fully answer your question, things between Croatians and Serbs (again, from the perspective of a regular Joe) seem to be better with each new generation of young people. Excuse the length of my answer, just wanted to expand a bit on what Kristian described in the previous comment 😅

Thing is Yugoslavia as other social countries had those worker unions and mentality of trying to achieve working class harmony. That included a need to having a quality spent freetime such as doing sports as a way of hanging with your "comrades". So sports was used to cheer up working class spirit, so almost every citizen was actively involved in sports on amateur level such as in other socialist countries. Denmark came second in Yugoslavia's qualifying group, finishing only a point behind Yugoslavia with 6 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss. They beat Yugoslavia in Yugoslavia, they did lose to the Yugoslavs in Denmark and drew with Northern Ireland in Belfast. They weren't just chosen because they came second to Yugoslavia but also because they had the best record of any team that came second in Qualifying - Portugal had 11 points, Italy, Switzerland and Czechoslovakia all had 10 points. There is a very good chance that Yugoslavia would have won that tournament had it not collapsed and it's been proven that everyone was severely underrating that Danish team including their star player who refused to go.

I grew up in a part of Zagreb that produced several Croatian national team players. I went to school with two of them, and our mothers worked together (the Šimić brothers). Our school playground was full of talent, and basically, if the best players gathered, the only way I could play was by bringing the ball (since there weren't many balls, and whoever had the ball got to play regardless of skill). My brother and I always thought we were bad football players. Probably 100 kids before us had the advantage of playing for the school team. Since no one liked to be the goalkeeper, I managed to secure that position for my class team. My brother didn't even get that. It was only much later that I realized my brother and I weren't actually bad, we just grew up surrounded by incredible talent. Many of those talented players didn't continue their careers, and some might have been even better than the later Croatian national team members. An episode in Switzerland opened my eyes. When my brother and I went to a local playground there, the locals made a mistake by creating a team of foreigners and their local team. My brother, an Italian guy, and I, along with a few of their not-so-talented foreigners, literally dismantled all the teams that showed up. It wasn't sport, it was a massacre. Winning by 20 goals became boring, so we asked to mix the teams. I was amazed at how poorly the Swiss played football. But actually, it wasn't that-they just hadn't been sharpened by the best players like I had.

Excellent video. However, one interesting piece of information was omitted. Yugoslavia qualified for Euro 1992 as first in their qualifying group. Denmark was the runner-up, and at that time, only the winner would go on to play in the final tournament. Yugoslavia was suspended on May 31st, and Denmark was called in as a replacement. Denmark played their first game in the final tournament 11 days later, on June 11th. Basically, they were called in as a replacement at the last moment, and they had no time for extensive preparations, especially knowing that the Danish league had ended a couple of weeks prior and few players went on their vacations. When they were announced as replacements, there was somewhat of a scramble to gather all the players and assemble a team. Nevertheless, they went on to play in the final tournament and, in the end, became champions, beating Germany in the finals. Sports is not math, and it doesn't mean that Yugoslavia would have won the championship should they have been allowed to play. Yet, we can't but notice that in the period 1990-92, Yugoslavian football was at the very top in the world. In the 1990 World Cup, Yugoslavia was in the quarterfinals, a man down and still a better team against defending champions Argentina, and only lost on penalties. In 1991, Red Star won the European Cup (later renamed the Champions League) and also won the Intercontinental Cup. In 1992, Yugoslavia was suspended from the Euro, and a runner-up, Denmark, took their spot and won the championship without preparations. Finally, it is worth mentioning that Yugoslavia was dominating other sports at that time. Yugoslavia won the 1990 FIBA World Championship and the 1991 EuroBasket. Yugoslavia also won the 1991 Water Polo World Champions (and the previous one in 1986). In the 1990 Handball World Championship, Yugoslavia placed 4th. Monika Seles, as a teenager before her 20th birthday, won 8 tennis majors in the 1990-93 period (3 Australian Opens, 3 French Opens, 2 US Opens). The sport was booming at that time (and the country, too, in some aspects), and then self-imploded, and everything fell apart.

One thing that helps is the players leaving from wars of the 90s getting great education in sport and other things in their new host countries. Rakitic althiugh he has now retired from internationals was born in Switzerland. Mateo Kovacic was born in Austria. You have a similar situation with Albanians in Switzerland making up a lot of the Swiss team and now some of them choosing to play for Albania. I live in Sweden and watch the leagues here and see a lot of Middle East players born in Sweden who are now playing football for their Middle East country. With an expanded World Cup I think we will see a competitive Middle East team with players born in Europe

Witsel is in the team of the year in La Liga. Bakayoko and Onana are both rising talents too. Our only weakness is our defense but that's why Witsel is now a defender just like in Atletico and De Ketelaere is having a fantastic season in Atalanta.
