This is a comparative showdown between the efficiencies of a Geiger Tube and a Gamma Scintillator
***NOTE: This is NOT a dose rate comparative demonstration. The sole purpose of the small digital meter placements was to indicate and serve as a control that was no additional source in the area skewing the timed count. As the small meters have different sized detection crystals it was decided to let them display the calibrated and expectedly consistent dose rate as opposed to the large difference in raw cpm.

Great , I can't believe you have so much equipment . the Scintillator detector is useful for what specific radiation , presumably alpha , beta Gamma ( ? Neutron with moderator? )

@@quantum-inc Gamma, however it can be used to detect alphas indirectly via braking radiation. A good example would be the low energy x-rays being emitted from a common smoke detector even though the Am241 source is primarily alpha. The metal casing and photon shielding of a typical Scint will make it blind to betas. Otoh, a typical Geiger tube can detect all three, but gammas will comparatively trickle in as seen in the video.

Scintillators can also indirectly detect neutrons via proton recoil. Requires a special type of plastic scintillator material… definitely a good topic for a future vid.

You can find scintillators materials that can be used for both, gamma and neutron. But NaI and CsI work only for gamma.

Beawere about the meaning of counts and dose rate. You can not compare sievert and counts. If you have to locate sources (lost, stolen or orfans) Geiger could be better. To dose measurements or even identification you need to go for scintillators/spectroscopic. Do not forget also what happens in Goiania with a scintillator.

Thanks for the response. It should be noted that no comparison was intentionally made or intended. The sole purpose of the small digital meter placements was to indicate there was no hidden source in the area skewing the timed count. Being that the small meters had different sized detection crystals it was decided to let them display the calibrated and expectedly consistent dose rate as opposed to the large difference in raw cpm. I’ve reviewed that portion of the video and it’s clear the reasoning wasn’t direct enough. I’ll add an update to the description to address.

@@ClagwellsGarage The idea was not to criticize; it was to help and improve. I work with these detectors, polimaster, thermo, identifinder, fulcrum , sparcs from DoE ( 16 to 64 liters of NaI), etc. Also, big and small geiger tube detectors range from low to high dose rates. To cover the full needs, most modern detectors come with scintillators and Geiger tubes for high doses. The question is, many users, not well trained, associate high numbers of counts with high doses, and for the same dose rate, a 1cm3 detector with give small number of counts when compared to a 1000cm3

@@eldermagalhaesdesouza3479 My career (ret) was in orphan source detection. CPM was paramount for location with dose used for safety and gamma spec (RIID) for ID. Can’t even begin to tell you how much fun it was writing up grants requests for Thermo, Flir, and others. Anyway, the “average Joe” I’ve found is mostly interested in source location, or raw cpm activity from something like a fiestaware plate or their granite countertop. Being as such, most of these vids will be focused on raw cpm efficiency or a detectors ability to sense very minor elevations. Doubtful I’ll ever get into dose rates too much but the heads up is greatly appreciated. I’ll probably make this a highlighted point in future vids.

@@ClagwellsGarage I understand you. I used detectors in Goiânia and also Chernobyl. In some points/spots I got 1 Sv/h...for those who works at NEST or MEST teams and emergency response . Some calibartions in past , I used " strong" sources close ...
