In this video I show why I think the Make Noise 0Coast is the best piece of hardware to learn and experiment with modular synthesis. I show an overview of the instrument before then applying it towards making SFX for a 2D video game I'm making, showing my sound design process and some more advanced tips and tricks.

Oh! I have another video which uses the 0-Coast as a way to teach the basics of modular synthesis, so if you’re new to the scene this could be a cool place to start: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fsmVndqryJ29daM.htmlsi=767_yhxI3Nhx2Fvm

The 0-Coast was my first semi modular in 2018. I sold it some time later. Last year a bought one again cos I missed it so much. Now it lives in my 7U Eurorack case. It just has that special timbre (maybe because of it's LPG) I couldn't recreate it even with a STO or DPO and Optomix. The Coast will always have a special place in my heart.

The 0-Coast was my first dip into modular as well and then I just went full eurorack after that point. It’s an amazing synth and you’re right, you’re thrust into a spot where you have to get to understand what’s going on to get what you want out of it. Though there is some normalization, the best bits are when you start experimenting, patching and making one thing influence another. Just thought I’d mention that before I forget. And now I’ll continue watching the second part haha. Patch away!

For me it appealed as ‘vaguely as close as I’ll ever get to a buchla!’ The doepfer dark energy was my prev-entry level to eurorack 😂 Admittedly I succumbed & bought a Rossum Morpheus (but that doesn’t count cos it’s awesome!)

Bought it on release and it was the start of my eurorack journey. Still have it today since it still integrates really well in my current rack (4 rows of 126HP). Really like how snappy the envelopes in combination with the low pas gate sound. For that reason. A typical patch I would use it for is to run some other oscillators from my rack thru the lpg of the 0-coast. And use the 0-coast oscillator to FM something else in the patch. Which is nice since I don't have that many analog FM sources in the rack.

It's so interesting and refreshing seeing how you design sounds outside a computer. Let's be honest, you'd probably be much faster doing this within a DAW, no 0-Coast, no Strega, no Digitakt. Yet at the same time, you'd probably also be slower because there'd be _TOO_ many options. I really love the dedication and the focus Sidenote: this reminds me when I saw a video of the sound design room within Apple's headquarters - I don't recall seeing traditional synths, just a computer, a few controllers, and crucially, a big rack of Eurorack.
@SoundsMick
@SoundsMick 4 ай бұрын
My usual process is to use hardware and record long takes of experimentation, I’ll bring those takes into the computer and edit them down and use the edits as source sounds for future sound design. I use hardware because it’s more playful and intuitive and especially the behaviour of something like Strega with its noisy delay and physical touch points would be difficult to reproduce on the computer. Glad you liked the video, thanks for watching!
@vinylarchaeologist
@vinylarchaeologist 4 ай бұрын
@@SoundsMick Certainly. It sounds like I'm implying you're not using the computer at all, when in fact you do, especially for editing - I thought as much but wasn't clear enough. I still thought it interesting that you use the Digitakt in conjuction with the other gear. Thanks for replying!
@SoundsMick

What is the stand you’re using here, and does it work nicely? All of the ones I’ve seen online don’t have any kind of support on top of the modules to prevent them from lifting up when patching, but yours looks like there actually is some kind of top constraint at the edges. The 3d printed stand I have is a little too flimsy to be pleasant to patch
