Definitely the best lens that is made for the GFX system for portraits. I have done reviews on this as well but I’m blown away by your images. I’ve also asked why Viltrox hasn’t come into the GFX space because they’re breaking all kinds of ground with Fuji X Mount and if they could come up with a 35mm 1.4 for GFX (28mm equivalent) would be AMAZING. Great video.

I remember watching yours and Kyle McDougall's videos about the mitakon leading up to me getting it! 100% Viltrox need to get into the GFX system, there's a lack of quality third party lenses which sucks, I did see the irix dragonfly 45mm f1.4 but I'm pretty sure that is just a full frame lens with the GFX mount. Also thank you so much!

Great photos and great review! Got this lens just a little while ago, and it’s so much better than I thought. I was expecting it to be much softer, but it’s actually pretty sharp, even at 1.4. Sharp enough at least. I’ve heard that some FF 50mm 1.2 (or faster) can be adapted to GFX and gives a similar look, but I’m glad I have this lens instead. It’s a native medium format lens and those adapted lenses probably have some strong vignetting in the corners.

It's such a quality lens, I haven't seen a single thing about people not liking it or regretting the purchase!

Ah trust me you can’t find FF lenses to Match Mitakon 65mm 1.4. FF lenses from 50mm to 58mm 1.2 or 1.4 have strong vignetting and will not cover the GFX. Don’t bother even adapting to match Mitakon look because you just can’t

manual focus can be fun, just not something I want to be stuck with. the new 55 1.7 is a killer lens, probably the one to get if you're eyeing this one. good video, cheers

The 55 1.7 looks great. I agree, if you have the funds and want auto focus, the 55 1.7 is definitely the way to go

55mm 1.7 is absolutely gorgeous lens. However nowhere near the bokeh and subject separation as Mitakon 65mm 1.4 does. Add very noisy step motor “bz bz bz” not smooth at all in moving glass and weak bokeh , nowhere near 4x5 look.

It’s really the best lens on GFX (for portraits, fashion , typical hipsters stuff : trash can photos, gas stations, cat 💩) . I worked with magazines and this 599$ made me make really good contracts. It has smooth creamy bokeh, no swirling at all with bokeh, 4x5/8x10 look, and 3D pop. What can you ask more? , oh yes if it would be f/1.2 or f/0.95 , this would be an absolute unit of a lens . BTW 02:55 your chart is not really correct. 645 film isn’t 60x45mm but 56x41,5mm. Which makes Hasselblad H6D 100C a true digital 645 with its 53,4x40mm sensor. A Pentax 67 is 56x67mm.

It's such a brilliant lens! Yeah it's just a chart I got from the internet

Hey! Two questions: - Was the photo at 1:59 taken at Carn Brea? - How hard it is to get a proper exposure with this lens? On my Sony camera I have never had a problem with adapted vintage lenses. The exposure meter works even when there is no communication between the camera and the adapter.

Yeah it was up at carn brea! And it doesn't do it most of the time but when you have a super high contrast scene then it won't be great

@@taranspictures cool that I recognised it. I lived and studied in Falmouth. Did a project in Redruth and Camborne. Walked all over the place, so it's forever in my heart :)

recently got myself the Mitakon. i am having a problem where the preview in the viewfinder/LCD is way too bright on a sunny day when i open up the aperture all the way. the taken image turns out fine in terms of exposure, but the preview is overexposed. i tried playing around with the exposure preview settings and "natural live view" in the menu. but no change. am i missing something here?

I have the same problem, it's because the lens has no electronic parts so it doesn't communicate with the camera. Sadly you will just have to deal with it from my experience

I wonder how it compares with the Mitakon 85 f1.2? any experience with that lens?

how is the lens at f2.8 and f4 compared to the GF 63mm? Or is this just a soft budget 1.4 only lens that has no sharpness stopped down?
@taranspictures
@taranspictures 11 ай бұрын
It's sharp wide open if you nail focus but that's not the easiest thing to do, anything other then wide open at 1.4 is significantly sharper. F2 is just like any other GFX lens

Manual focus only? I can live with that. But no electronic parts also mean manual exposure only. No apperture priority, yes? Hmm... kinda bummer. Take a look at Nikon F/Leica M systems, for example. You can experience apperture priority even with manual focus lenses 😅

I shoot the GFX pretty much the same as I would shoot the Pentax 67 so it isn't that big of a deal for me but if it was on my X-Pro 3, which I primarily shoot in aperture priority, then it would definitely be a problem
@anta40
@anta40 11 ай бұрын
@@taranspictures yep that's my point. when I'm shooting on medium format film bodies, sure I don't have apperture priority. but with digital bodies (and which is something not cheap), of course I expect more modern conveniences :D

Your film photos look surprisingly harsh and have near blown out highlights. So either something went wrong with developing it or digitizing the photos. Film should be soft and elegant in the bright areas. Not this very digital look. Almost like a 2000s compact camera. Given the price of film, I doubt this was the goal.

Only a few film photos in this video were over exposed, probably because I didn't use a light meter at this point. I do suspect that when I was using the developing machines at university that something was up since I usually had varied results

No it is NOT! I cannot do a pro shoot using this manual lens. No way!!!
@taranspictures
@taranspictures 10 ай бұрын
I mean you can use it on a professional shoot, it would just take a little longer to focus but that wasn't the point of this video, the point was showing how unique this lens is. Not everything is about sharpness and detail, photography can be just for fun you know.

Not everyone has the same opinion and people look for different things when purchasing lenses, I believe that this is the best lens to get that medium format look, it definitely has its flaws but that's ok
