@@chloehanna9225 I wouldn't say clueless but he was being wilfully ignorant. He tried to stay safe by not choosing a side this entire time. That makes this scene so powerful. Even someone like him sees the seriousness of the situation in the end and starts endorsing Moxie in his own way.

I think he just wanted to stay out of the drama. That, and he was a bit ignorant. I don't fully blame him because it's normal to not be aware of how bad an issue is when you yourself didn't have to experience it. I'm not saying that it's impossible, but it can be hard sometimes. I feel like he knew this was a problem and means well, he just didn't understand to the degree that the girls in his class did. If he chose to stay the same and not change, and what matters is that he changed in the end.

To be honest, I don’t think he was a jerk, strict maybe, but not a jerk. As a teacher, he would be in a tight spot. If he showed support for Moxie, a group which had encouraged role breaking, he could get in trouble. But if he didn’t, he would be called out by his students.

They just have to enforce the rules so they can keep their job. It's the principals and the people in charge of school districts who are to blame. @Jonathan Votta While I agree that some scenes were cheesy and unrealistic, namely Emma casually revealing her dark secret in public, or Vivian and Seth having a date in a funeral home, I honestly liked the movie and book overall, since it featured an important message of feminism, sticking together, having your voice heard, and never giving up.

@Jonathan Votta In all fairness movie has heart and while it didn't cover other types of feminism (asian women, trans women, black women, etc) as much as the lead character (with her being white), still a better teen movie than other netflix films and felt real especially with the antagonists. Plus, do give points for the teacher at least trying to be an ally, and while the principal is a jerk, it's a reality that she may have been someone who wanted equality but just gave up due to the world being harsh. If you watched The Boys, the principal is Queen Maeve, someone who once cared but just doesn't due to burnout

THIS. i loved how moxie was firstmost an ideal, a principle of freedom and dignity, from such an insecure real girl who started to understand that she didn't have to subject herself and others to unfairness just because someone said so. She matured step by step and was as real as a character can be in a movie. You can see how the feminist friend is slowly losing hope for that school, she's fighting alone and doesn't expect for others in that school to care yet the main character is watching her and learning in silence. Her, the black friend and the Asian best friend have all different personalities but i love how the show told us that it doesn't matter if you're a leader or a silent allie, even the smallest show of care can indeed start a revolution, that even when you think it's meanless it's not, because others will see and pass the ideal. Loved also the boyfriend, a good depiction of good masculinity who has always been supportive but that protect himself from the verbal abuse her girlfriend did to him and how he didn't want to have anything to do with her until she really showed she was sorry

Such as with the main character bullying her friend because she just won’t come to terms with her feminist ideals, how the students just bully the teacher who is there working for minimum wage and taking care of a bunch of teenagers who thing everything that comes out of their mouth are these pearls of wisdom. How they treat the male characters and force them to be assholes. Or how they wrote in Mitchell committing a rape in the last fifteen minutes of the film, which they are trying to use to justify the girls’ shitty behaviours. But in all honesty it does reflect a true aspect of feminism; turning people into bitter antagonizers who are catty, bully people who don’t conform or partake in their trash fire of a movement, and ostracize women who don’t care for contemporary feminism.

I'm pretty sure people already know they can speak out its definitely not needed.

"It was clearly a joke" - I think all bullying and bullies need to be held to the same standards - otherwise we are seeing the bullied/victims turning into bullies/perpetrators themselves, instead of healing the wound and finding remedy and resolve. In my view, if the movie's purpose is to make a point about bullying, it shouldn't be normalizing that behaviour. It's so subtle you hardly notice, and that's an issue I think. Especially as the only reason to trip him up seems to be that he is a guy/white/more privileged (not one of the bullies).

I agree but they did it to prove a point about the male athletes (particularly the mascot) and even the guy who plays the mascot was part of Moxie by the end so he was willing to take one for the team

YES! Thank you. It’s not just bullying. It’s assault. The guy broke his arm, and hospital bills in the United States aren’t necessarily what you would call cheap. Not to mention the guy didn’t do anything wrong in the entire movie. He was just a harmless, dorky dude delivering dad jokes and pirate puns. Very inconsistent morality on the movie’s part, especially when assault was mentioned two minutes earlier.

It definitely had some flaws, but I don’t think she was ever supposed to me an expert on feminism, I just think her finding all her moms old stuff was what inspired her to actually start caring about the issues. And the scene with Lucy was to show character growth, how in the beginning of the movie she didn’t really understand why the shit the guys were doing was wrong and how she grew to actually understand it and care about it

after watching a few movie reviews i do understand why this wasn’t executed as well as it could have, seeing as they chose the typical cishet white protagonist. however, i did really, really enjoy the message and the content in the movie, and i’m starting to think that maybe the protagonists play was to show their growth in understanding other races and identities. kind of a play on “you don’t need to be a minority to stand up for them” but idk she was still kinda meh even though i appreciate the character development

While I agree that this movie could have been executed better, I think she was a feminist all along she just didnt do anything but finding her mom’s old stuff inspired her. It’s kinda like how when watching something powerful you feel motivated to do all sorts of things like they did or how you would feel motivated to clean after watching someone else do it.

I don't think the movie is about anybody being an expert on femenism it's about finding your voice. This about them figuring out how to change things as 16 and 17 year olds. No one in there is perfect which makes it more realistic

But to give you an example; a lot of the time women can’t go outside after dark. Or if we do, we need to carry around something to defend ourselves. As far as I know, getting attacked/taken in the dark is much less of a worry for men, at least to the point where they don’t have to carry around pepper spray whenever they take a walk at midnight. I’m sure you can see the problem there?
