Tretiak created a stance/styel called:"THE CRAB" it is Illustrated in his goaltending book I have from 1984. No one has used since.

Dec. 31, 1975 game between the Habs and Red Army: 38-13 the shots on goal in favor of the Montreal Canadiens (a team that would go on to win the next 4 consecutive Stanley Cups). But a 3-3 tie due to the great play of Tretiak. The Montreal fans giving a Soviet goaltender a standing ovation after the game is one of those rare, transcendental moments in the world of sports.

When I was playing high level goal in my teens many years ago, training from Tretiak’s book brought my play level higher than it ever was!

Tretiak was a renaissance man by emulating the great Canadian goalies of the 50's and 60's with his stand up style coupled with his ability to switch to a butterfly style at a moment's notice. He took the very best of the Canadian styles and honed them into a style of his own. He was very analytical and scientific (if you will) about the job of stopping the puck. He once said that a goalie's job is to stop every shot. He's probably rarely going to do that but it still remains his job. That is a pretty good goalie philosophy. If a shot gets by you, you should briefly think about why it happened and what you should do or could do the next time around. But like most goalies he has had his share of terrible nights between the posts and that is something a lot of us would never have the chance to see at the time. Phil Esposito rolls his eyes and laughs when people say how good he was. Phil thinks he's one of the worst goalies he ever faced. Was that comment tongue in cheek? Espo maintains it wasn't. I think he was a pretty darned good goalie along side Dzurilla the Czech goalie of the 76 Canada Cup. Sure the game has changed a lot and you don't see many real stand up goalies anymore. Today's NHL goals seem to be scored high while the goalies are down on their knees.

I'm a Hawks fan, and Tretiak not only coached Belfour but he coached Hasek too.. And it was funny because the Hawks wanted to sign Tretiak in 1990 to play, so had that happened the Hawks would have had Hasek, Belfour and Tretiak - arguably the 3 best goalies of all time - and without question 3 of the top 10 ATG's...

Tretiak was offered a contract with the Canadiens in February 1984 which was also the month that Tretiak retired. If he did go to the Canadiens, would Roy still be a franchise player with the Canadiens? Discuss.

Before the 1972 Summit Series the NHL sent 2 scouts from the Maple Leafs to scouts the Soviet hockey players. They said Tretiak was no good.

"THE CRAB" and the only goalie to ever his the Tretiak tecnhique in the NHL was his student MARTIN BRODEUR. Also Tretiak's GAA in the 72 Summit and 70's were not bad.goaltending was MUCH different in the 70's. Also like Grant Fuhr he mae the KEY saves at the right time.

Cool vid, one corrections though. Philly were already known as the broad street bullys in the early 70's prior to their game with the red army. They were also back to back stanley cup champions heading into that game, winning the cup in 74 and 75.

Oh and I got a great topic for a future video you might be interested in. You could do a story on what happened to Terry Sawchuk. He was such a transcendent talent. He died at age 40 and the circumstances surrounding his premature death are not often discussed especially on KZfaq.

Detractors like to point out his poor end to the summit series, but neither Dryden or Esposito was much better overall. It often sounds like sour grapes by the Canadians who just totally underestimated the Soviets and were not fit for the series. Still a wonderful display of hockey by 2 passionate teams. Tretiak was the real deal though, Montreal certainly rated him, and they don't often pick duds.

1 goalie of all time is .... Dominick Hasek. Who ever seen him play u would say thank god for Replay. Because most saves he made live weren't hardly seen, until that replay showed you how this man robbed you by his big blocker while his back turned away from u lol

'74 was against weaker WHA, not NHL (and WHA circa '74 was weaker than WHA circa '78-79). Still significant though.

Vladislav Tretiak DOMINATED the Philadelphia Flyers with his CCCP comrades January 1983 when they went into the Spectrum and they DESTROYED Pelle Lindbergh. In fact the Soviet National team made a habit of DESTROYING Pelle Lindbergh be it the Olympics, World Champiosnhips and NHL. In 1984 Team Sweden refused to play their best goalie, that being Lindbergh, in 1984. Slava's best back up on the National team was Vladimir Myshkin.

in europe we knew about the russian and tretjak and the beautiful style the russian showed off but we were shocked when they met north american teams and how the tactics were to hit and hurt your ooponent and intimidate the other team . it was obvious that north american teams didnt have the poise and style or endurance to play real hockey and of course with lack of discipline and with thugs like esposito and others they indimidted and injured the oposition and thats how they won still today the nhl is based on dump and run and fihgs . of course this brings money in but to call this beautiful is ridiculous . anyway for us that grew up with the game we sa the best hockey

tretiak was good. But remember one thing. People forget to mention this. And give tretiak more credit than deserved in my opinion...tretiak only played international games/ tournaments...he had weeks months and sometimes a year to analyze,prepare and train for those games....if tretiak was in the nhl with a hectic schedule, travelling, injuries and fatigue...plus players getting to know his "weak spot" do you think tretiak would of been the goalie we all praise nearly 50 years now? Nope.

MARTIN BRODEUR AND VLADISLAV TRETIEK. Denis, Marty's Dad, told him got get out of the butterfly school (Allaire) and visit Tretiak. Marty became a teacher there he loved Tretiak so much. Tretiak the best Euro goalie ever (I do not want to hear Hsek, hsi glove hand SUCKED and Marty the best ever all aroud. Surprise? I think now.

I've been saying this for years. If Tretiak had played professionally in the NHL, we would be talking about the best goalie of all time. It's a shame that world politics at the time prevented that from becoming a reality. Fun fact: Vladislav Tretiak and Valeri Kharlamov are the only two players inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame that never played in the NHL.

Vladislav Tretiak was a star against amateurs, but had mixed results against NHL players. 1972 made Tretiak a name? The best goalies come up big in the biggest games, and Tretiak could not come up with one big performance in the last three games in Russia. His name should never be uttered when discussing the greatest goaltenders of all time.
