Great video! From the age of 18 until 22 I swung an axe almost everyday from end of fire season to beginning ....USFS Mendocino Nat Forest. Winter brush/fuel break crew....Summer timber cruising and grading and USDA certified log scaler. And 24/7 standby firefighter. Somehow my good training from my dear old Dad ended me up as the designated axe/polaski repair and maintainence man. So seeing your video brought back some fond memories of shaving my arms to prove to my team that they were getting a finely tuned Polaski from my bench LOL Just one tip...tennis balls make the best file hands ever! Take two 1/4" dia fender washers (1/4" bolt hole and at least 1" outside dia.) Square out the holes to fit over the bastard file tang. Put the washer on the file first....core or drill holes in the ball !!!dont slice holes with a knife....they will fail and tear!!! Put the ball on the tang then the second washer and tap down your handle. Its genuis for saving your gloves and or your knuckles. Cheers

Thanks to another You Tuber, Wranglerstar, who inspired me to start restoring vintage hand tools (saws, cross cut saws, axes, bit brace augers and auger bits) I have a decent collection of axes (57 of them) mostly Australian single bit axed, and I'm all ways on the look out for more, also vintage tools, I picked up a 8" 4 in 1 file from the local flee market for $2.00 about 4 months ago, still in the waxed paper wrapper tied with a piece of string...NEVER been used.

Regarding the combustion of oily rags mentioned half way through the video: I've witnessed rags ignite while hanging over rungs of a ladder to dry. They were hanging individually and not overlapped at all. They don't need to be wadded up to generate enough heat to burst into flames.

Excellent tutorial on Axe maintenance. For anyone that is new to sharpening tools the edge profile name he describes is called a Convex Edge. If you do an internet search for Axe or Knife Profiles there are diagrams which show different edge profiles, Convex, Saber, Scandi, Flat, etc... Convex has stronger edge retention for chopping.

This video has nothing to do with the television show "how it works." Instead it comes from a video series that was given away as one of the incentives to donate to PBS several years ago, I am not sure if they had it specially made for this event or not. Anyway, I love this series even though I did not have the money to donate to get this video series. This video series inspired me to learn to sharpen my own knives and other straight edged weapons and tools. I really like the host's mannerisms and authenticity. He does not strike me as someone that is stuck on himself. Quite the contrary, he seems pretty humble while at the same time coming across as someone who still knows what he is doing and is comfortable in his skill. I respect this greatly as it is a rare commodity in today's society.

Enjoyed the video. It takes me back to the smell of fresh cut timber and the taste of cold, sweet water, drawn from the bottom of the old well by hand. It sure tasted good, just like the beans and taters cooked on a wood fired cook stove.

I had an uncle who kept his axes razor sharp and he knew how to use them. He was an old time carpenter, building houses out of rough cut lumber in the old balloon style building method. His axe was his best friend. He never bought an axe handle or a hammer handle. He made them out of the white layer of , what we called, hill hickory, as opposed to bottom hickory or pig nut hickory which grew in the bottom land. You had to wear them out because they wouldn't break. You could twist one of his handles at 45 degrees to the head and it would only spring back. Only difference between the looks of his handles and store bought was that he left chop Mark's on the bottom knob so that you could tell that they were hand made.

I found that putting in metal wedges cross grain helps, it prevents the wedge from coming out. I sometimes slim them down to minimize splitting. P.S, I like the mill bastard file "Sword" handle.

2:16 To get rust off... I just soak the axe head in White Vinegar for about 12 hours. When you take it out, gently rub it down with a cloth, the remaining spots removed with soft bristles.

DO NOT BUNCH UP AND THROW YOUR OILY RAGS AWAY LIKE THAT! You want to make sure they are open so any heat generated can escape, not build up inside a crumpled up rag and cause spontaneous combustion!

Guess you shouldn't have cut the top of the handle off before you tried to hang it the first time. Then you wouldn't have had to go back and work it all over again

I hang axes every day and make the handles myself - I use a drill press with a 125mm 60 grit sanding disk to fit a head - it takes me 10min max and I get a pefect fit every time.

While there is good information in this video, I'd like to point out that the grain orientation in that double-bit ax handle is not what I'd consider premium or safe. The grain should run closer to parallel with ax head, not at the a little less than 90 degrees that is shown. Also, I prefer to cut off the excess after I have installed the wedge into the kerf, leaving 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch above the top of the ax head.

Young people, attitudes, self entitlement & always complaining.. Expecting everything was done just for them. I know with certainty that you are young because a decent, mature individual would never leave such a rude, thoughtless comment to someone they do not know. This video is perfectly fine & if you pay attention, you might learn something as it is chock full of useful information. You miss the reason for this video. It is not a production tutorial nor is it an example of production values or quality. It is an axe maintenance video. Perhaps it was recorded with a VHS camera. What does that matter. Maybe this instructional video was produced when that was all that was available at the time. Again, you miss the point.
