My band mate and myself both played Guild. I had the D50 and he had the D55. They were both work horse's. The year was 1976. Today I still play a guild !

Its alarming to hear that they need to be sent back with QC issues at that price point. I have a 1980 D50 and a 1972 D35. Love them.

I always wanted a Bluegrass Jubilee. Those guitars really gave a D-28 a run for its money. I gave my Brother a pre Fender D4N as I recall Fender bought Guildnearvthe end of 1994. Cheers

I had one of these along with a F50R and a F512 12 string back in the 70's , 80's...all sounded good but built very heavy like a tank.

I’ve jonesed for the D55 for a lot of years. It’s on my top five “grail” list. I’m not yet to the place where I’m comfortable playing a guitar this costly as a daily. It wouldn’t be a case queen. But not a daily. Now that I’ve played one, it will continue to live in my mind with the best I’ve played.

Nice sounding guitar. What is the neck profile like? I do well with Martin modified low oval and modified V. So you're telling me this is better than the Guild guitars made in Hoboken NJ? Thanks John and Jeremy

I’m interested in buying a Guild F-512 but if it took you guys 3 attempts to get one good D-55 well that is scary. I might want to wait and see how Guild is really doing

Ooh, that's a nice sounding guitar. Flat picking is my style, and medium gauge strings are standard. Are these strings mediums? And, just wondering what size pick (mm) you're using. Also, could you describe the neck shape. Thanks!
@AcousticShoppe9 ай бұрын
The neck shape on the D-55 is just a standard C Shape, we also believe that there were light strings used in this video. John's pick in this video would be the BlueChip TAD 55-3R, or 1.3mm.

I’ve heard this comment about being able to “still spray a nitrocellulose finish”. Are there laws in the US or California that now limit this?
@AcousticShoppe Жыл бұрын
Yes it is being limited in many places, including California.

I have the chance to buy one locally, secondhand, (I'm in a European country with 25% sales tax) Condition appears to be immaculate, judging by the photos, one previous, female, owner who fingerpicks. Asking price is equivalent to US$ 1,650. New price here, with shipping and 25% sales tax, is US$ 4,750. What is the second-hand price in the US? I'm tempted to sell off some valuables and buy it?
@AcousticShoppe Жыл бұрын
Depending on the year & condition of course, after doing a quick search on Reverb, it looks like a majority of these are going for a little over $3,000 USD.

I had a Guild D55 that I bought new for a good deal in the 90s. I hope they have improved them since then. Ivoroid binding began peeling off from the fretboard. Bridge lifted. It was heavy and overbuilt. Came with plastic bridge pins, on a flagship model? Not worth the money. Sound was not great compared to the D40 and D50. Maybe I just got a lemon. A flagship model should at least have real wood binding and wood or Tusq bridge pins. Luckily I got a good price when I sold it on eBay a few years later. Also there is no continuity with Guild, they’ve moved several times, sold and resold. Maybe this new model is much better, I don’t know. Most of the celebrities who play them have custom shop models by the way. Not straight from factory floor. I don’t mean to be hater, but buyer beware. Not all that glitters is gold.

I've been REALLY wanting a Guild D-55 or D-40, but had a bad experience with a previous Cordoba Acero D-11CE (discontinued after a short run right before Cordoba bought Guild)....in which I paid over $800 only to have the bridge lift right from the start. That was a chinese made guitar, and I wonder if that's the same factory now making the Westerly Guilds.
