I came across an old video I used to obsess over when I was learning about Nuno Bettencourt. When I was 15/16 I used to download Nuno Solo videos and watch them on repeat to learn everything.
What I didn’t realise is that this particular video is responsible for way more of my approach to play g guitar that I knew!
So I thought I’d share this discovery with you!
Here’s the original video: • Nuno Bettencourt - Rif...

Thanks for checking this out guys! Also, I know it’s Dee, I learned it along with all the other bits in the video back in the day - I was asking all of you! Like I said, we always rant and rave about our favourite albums, solos and riffs! But what about the stuff in between? The bits of playing where you hear the ‘off the top of my head’ playing, and the stuff that happens in the moment! That’s what I was obsessed with in this video. There are many other vids like this for me, so if I find more of them, I’ll try share them in the same light!

For me it was probably a video of Gene Hoglan playing Crystal Mountain from Death from memory after not playing it for 7 years. Just drums, no context, inspired me to death as a drummer and probably formed my way of approaching drum writing and performing! Thanks for the share bro!

Rabea, this is exactly why you became my favorite guitarist during the last few years... just your 'in the moment' playing when you're testing out gear or whatever, when you get lost in it and apologize (don't apologize, that's what I'm here for!!). Your ambient noodling livestream last year has become this video for me. I go back to it whenever I'm feeling not in a creative frame of mind and always leave inspired.

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing...if Rabea realizes that we do the VERY same thing. Go watch his videos and rewinding those 20s of his licks over and over so we get wtf he is effin' doing there :D On another note...aren't we just so lucky to being able to do that and to be able to see both "our model" and him showing us where he got the influence from...his model and teacher and see his excitement. Usually, that's not the case. Often you can see your "master", but not HIS master at the same time and get the connection there between them. What times are we living in, what times

Hey guys, just to be clear - I know it’s Dee I was testing y’all hahah I learned it after I watched this when I was a kid. Love that since ‘Rise’ dropped everyone is seeing how incredibly talented Nuno is. I’ve been saying it for years haha! Love that people are finally realising it in the wider guitar community. In a world where I believe the true guitar hero’s are fading, and everyone seems to care about technicalities and this ‘anti boomer’ bullshit. I love that he is ‘rising’ through the crowd, and I couldn’t be more here for it.

@@HeadbangoO Yeah. Your comment is just a stupid KZfaq comment. Compare how often people will mention Petrucci, Vai, Gilbert, Yngwie, or even Abasi and some of the newer guys and how often Bettencourt is mentioned in relation to that. I never said that literally noone knows who he is. I said that he's always kind of one of the second row mention guys, even though he belongs to the absolute forefront.

It's amazing how much you can learn from a 16 minutes video if you're watching the right players. Nuno Bettencourt is an amazing player and from what i've watched so are you. Ever since i've played guitar i always found that watching the masters is the best way to learn, whether it's a live performance or a lesson video. Sometimes it can just be them playing freely without any purpose. In my shredder years i used to watch Steve Vai Live in Astoria London religiously, i've had in vhs copied from a friend and later i bought the dvd. I've always had a hard time concentrating on studies so live videos of great players have always been like books to me. Thanks for sharing, this has been very valuable and i'm sure that i'm gonna watch it many times.

I remember stumbling upon this video many years ago. I am a huge Nuno fan and was eating up anything I could find of him - frustratingly there is little. I was so obsessed with the produced metal album tones, I thought this video sounded awful and almost ignored it. But luckily I persevered. His style is just so goddamn groovy. I'll never hope to play most of his stuff, but even my own modest rhythm style is heavily influenced by Nuno. Some of his side band projects are jaw-dropping - check out STIFF and PAINT THE TOWN RED. I have no idea how he does whatever he is doing. And of course, Cupid's Dead broke me then and breaks me now. Thanks Bea - always nice to spend time with you and Nuno!

Thats how i learned 20 yrs ago was by ear. I wasnt practicing enough and had no help to learn new songs that i couldn't figure out by ear so i quit guitar. Now for last year ive picked it back up and have learned so much more so much easier because of youtube. I started my own youtube channel aimed at straight up beginners to try n help them out even though im not great im learning everyday now and am hooked. And youtube was a major reason i picked the guitar back up. Now ive went nuts buying the best gear i can save for and afford. So i buy amps and if i dont like them i sale them and buy more it is actually fun . searching for your own sound is exspensive but fun as hell

I play death metal, so even nowadays I learn everything by ear (Its impossible to find tabs for most death metal songs), dont see it as a disadvantage at all, if anything this has made me improve a lot as a guitarist, and also to find my style as a musician, which many musicians struggle with. Internet is amazing but the hardest work will always have a greater reward.

Hey Rabea, I _loved_ this video! No need for excuses, getting excited about stuff is the best thing about music - and a good motivator to develop chops! I can _so_ relate to those bits in unexpected corners of someone’s playing that made me giddy with excitement and were more influential than someone disclosing a secret riff in a clinic! Nuno has been just like you, humble and open about his influences - Brian May being one of course :) But what I hear from 13:03 onwards also reminded me a bit of Steve Morse, something I had not really heard in Nuno’s play before. Which is an interesting call-back to your observation about Nuno’s loose wrist of course - because poor Steve really sacrificed his health to his monster style... Thanks for a cool video!

So, so love this Rabea! I'm an old dude(like 6 years older than Chappers), inspired as a kid by Rush and KISS and Van Halen. But the perspective is timeless with this! It was all from going to the concerts, and then looking for something to learn from a magazine in my early days of guitar. Then later it was MTV videos for sure. And then the VHS video series you had to buy. Life got in the way, but now I'm trying to get caught up again and get decent at guitar. Love your stuff, and your style!!

I never realized Nuno was a small person. either that or he loves gigantic guitars. I listen to him a lot, I just never see him so I pictured him Thor sized.

Was lucky enough to stand about a foot away and watch him jam a solo with ZakK and Vai at a show. Even got a fist bump! But yeah he’s not a big guy just big playing, big time, and a big heart!

Amazing! I’ve never heard of him but what a player! I can see why he’s inspired you and made you the amazing player you are. Great video. It’s scary to see the level some people have achieved - truly at one with the fretboard.

guitar, like most things in life, is not a solo project. we stand on the shoulders of those who’ve inspired us and invested in us. i love that. love this video and seeing the way his playing influenced yours, but how you still have your own sound, which will then in turn inspire more players (of which i’m one). personally, i’d throw props to Sam Vilo. watching his playing has influenced me more than any other single player.

I was lucky enough to be inspired by Nuno in real time in the late 80's before he was a legend.I listened to his first 2 albums over and over again, they are master pieces of guitar playing.

Really interesting video, I hadn't realised how many of the licks you play in videos and demos are pretty much straight from Nuno. I really enjoy watching stuff like this!

Seen Nuno live twice and both times he blew my mind glad to see him getting the love he deserves. His style has also had a massive impact on my playing, especially the way he manages to mix rhythm and lead playing into his music. When I first heard your playing Bea I could already hear this influence so find to find out you were a fan I was not surprised at all.

Nuno has been more of a guitar hero for me than. Eddie, Satch, or Vai. I can't help but genuinely feel his playing. He sweats Funk!!! And this is why I am a subscriber of your channel. You provide that very same thing in your playing. You can't help but feel it!!!

Love his sense of rhythm, incredible, it’s like he’s taken from Hendrix and SRV but what he plays isn’t bluesy, although I know it could be if he wanted it to be

I totally understand what you are saying about his feel..every time he'd hit a lick....you and I made grunts at the same time! Ha.. Nuno has a way of playing something very familiar, at the same time, he takes it and molds his own feel into it. He's very special when it comes to playing. Highly underestimated

The thing about Nuno that always amazed me is with how much ease he changes gears. He can from a riff or slower passage and in one nanosecond jump onto shredding and sweeping and back again with no warming into it. Usually people start a bit of tremolo pickings to get started but not Nuno. Amazing control

Oh, I remember this video! I used to spent so long trying to find stuff like this and old Dimebag videos and clinics, Satriani interviews, Petrucci's old lessons, Paul Gilbert's etc etc back in the day. Mostly from the likes of WinMX/Kazaa/Limewire/etc haha. Goooooood timessss. I remember watching them religiously and just being both blown away and fascinated by it all, it was like glimpsing into a whole new world of stuff I had no idea even existed and was possible technique and overall sound wise before Id gotten a guitar and before I'd really become obsessed with it all and was just listening to the music :D I remember thinking the audio quality on this and the video quality was great haha

Thanks for this Rabbea! I remember going to a japanese grocery store in Paris and ask then to order this Young Guitar very issue for me! What is funny is that when I learned guitar I was stunned and inspired by Nuno's playing for all the things that you are highlighting here. And this was 10 years before you did! Really cool to see that it's all still relevant in 2021!

Thank you for sharing..I am the same with Gary Moore..Parisian walkways is been 20 years since I heard that song on a keyboard with a guitar tone not knowing who is playing the original. So 5 years a go I found out about Gary M and I start playing electric guitar. Today I was abel to learn by year really easy the song and I had tears in my eyes because I can play my favorite song from my guitar hero. I really admire you Rabea ..you are a very good guitarist and very honest to and you share a lot from your knowledge so I thank you for thinking about guys like me new to the guitar world🤘
