In our latest video, Stephan and I talk about Giovanni dall'Agocchie's Varying Among Guards, which is an amazing historical sidesword drill that can be done both solo and with a partner. In historical fencing or HEMA (for Historical European Martial Arts) we reconstruct sword fighting systems from historical sources. Our club focuses on Italian medieval and renaissance sources, fencing with the Spadone (Two-Handed Sword), Spear, Sidesword (One-Handed Sword) together with Shield, Cape, Dagger, you name it!

It's a lovely form! I haven't been on my Bolognese as much lately but I was working with this a lot about a month ago. Glad to see you mention some inferred footwork from the previous sections, I did some of the same things. I need to try it with a partner!

Being the best historical sidesword drill is like being the best underwater basket weaver in all of Monaco. No matter how good it actually is, the competition isn't exactly numerous. And I'm now pondering on whether there would be some kind correlation between different types of drills and cultural and societal backgrounds of the authors or intended readers of treatises. I came here for a cheeky one-liner, not deep thoughts!

Well the competition is numerous... it's just most of them are really bad :D This has at least cleary defined inputs, lots of prior given context and is aimed at students of the art. If you'd just learn to apply all the actions here, then your fencing would be probably fine from a defensive perspective.

Excellent. It’s interesting to see the parallels with English broadsword, though I don’t know if that’s because of common lineage or just common biomechanics. (We know how Silver felt about those Italians.)

Great video, we will use this today in my club. I feel like the overarching theme of this drill is dealing with your opponent's mistakes. Many of the actions the patiente takes aren't very wise hahah..

Yeah, the main story in dall'Agocchie is: don't attack commitedly without advantage or you run into a prepared defense.

What make and model are the swords used in this video?

Stephan uses his Kvetun Sidesword 1 and I use my Pike Armory Sidesword 4a.
