Had a home invasion in 2011. Met the guy in the kitchen after he climbed through my window. Turned the lights on, pointed my pistol at him, he put his hands up and then jumped back thru the window and ran down the street (took my screen with him). I then called the cops to make a report. Crime stopped without firing a shot and no legal ramifications. Just having a gun means something. 👍

Penetration is a weird science. Following a British Army test in the 1950's it was discovered that a standard Nato sandbag will stop a 308 (7.62) moving at 2,840 fps at 30 yards yet a 124 grn 9mm moving at 950 fps will pass right through it and kill whoever is sitting behind it. It all comes down to energy dissipation. It is not as simple as everybody thinks.

Own a musket for home defense, since that's what the founding fathers intended. Four ruffians break into my house. "What the devil?" As I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle. Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nails the neighbors dog. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, "Tally ho lads" the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion. He Bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up. Just as the founding fathers intended.

Here's the problem with that: now, even with the cleanest of HD shoots, if you end up with a political D.A., you are screwed. An errant D.A. is going to potentially present that as premeditation - as you just looking and waiting for the opportunity to shoot somebody. That $10 sign could cost you hundreds of thousands times more in legal fees and/or future wages - besides advertising that you have guns.

As we've seen there are literal commie judges and DA's who've infiltrated our legal system. The last thing you want to do is to give them an inch. And think about this, jury selection is based on voter registration. I'm not a Democrat but I've been summoned for jury duty. Have I ever actually been SELECTED for jury duty? Not once. They know my political leanings and chose not to select me. Don't expect a bunch of conservatives to sit in on your jury trial if it comes to that. They probably won't be there.

As a layman who doesn't know very much about firearms, the first thing I'd think to shop for is a 9mm pistol and a shotgun. I'm guessing my pattern of thought isn't uncommon. Thank you for doing the penetration test, it has really helped me think twice about firearm selection beyond ammo ballistics. I wouldn't think a shotgun would have that kind of penetration either.

When I took the Combat Carbine course with my police department (requisite course for being authorized to carry one in the vehicle on duty) , the instructors showed us FBI ballistics tests for several types of rounds through various types of walls in homes. One thing that got my attention was that once a hollow point goes through a gypsum or wooden wall, the "cup" of the hollow point is filled with wall material and then the round acts like ball ammunition from that point on for pistols. It never occurred to me that would happen to hollow-point pistol rounds . The shotgun slug had the deepest penetration of any round in a typical home with interior walls, more than rifle or pistol due to the kinetic energy of the round (KE = 0.5 x mass of projectile x velocity squared). The slug was not the recommended round within a home. I completely agree with your assessment of the pistol being the best home-defense weapon. Even a DA revolver like the S&W Model 66 using .38+P is simple, no safety, just point and shoot. I enjoyed the video Sean. Fair Winds and Following Seas!

Kentucky Justice If you miss your first shot with a shot gun or multiple people have a gun then they are going to put rounds on you and you will have to pump your shot gun in a extremely intense situation then put in a follow up round where as with a semi auto rifle you can immediately put on follow up shots on the same target or another target if there are multiple people. With a rifle you can handle most any situation where as if you have to rechamber a shell every shot you will be at a disadvantage if there are multiple people with guns or you don’t hit a fatal shot on the first shot.

The point you missed about the shotgun is the flexibility of the ammo you can put in it. A 12 gauge can take a wide variety of loads from 2 3/4” #8 birdshot to your 3” 00 buck or a slug. Plus, you have a choice of the gauge of the gun that can reduce weight and recoil. It does look like the pistol caliber carbine has advantages as well and is worthy of consideration.

Also I do not want to impair my hearing if I need to grab my gun. I want to be sure family members can call out to me and I can hear them. Also I absolutely do not like red dots in a self defense situation I think it's TERRIBLE advice. You need to keep it simple and reliable. That's why for my family members I only keep 38 special six shooter. No safety, no red dot, just point and click. For me I like a semi-auto 12 gauge for home defense, but family members don't know how to operate it. A 38 special with no safety like a pencil barrel S&W or a ruger security six is perfect.

I was under the impression that standard M193 55gr 5.56mm ammo is actually safest due to high velocity projectile fragmentation. Also, that 9mm did NOT perform as expected, it should have mushroomed and/or leafed off outwards. You could even try 5.56 hollow points which should leaf off like crazy due to the velocity.

When delivering training or a briefing, you go for direct and to the point. When dealing with civilians, you throw in a joke or two. “Yeah, green tip sucks, so we went to black hills 77’s”. How do I know he has a sense of humor? The eyebrows popping over the sunglasses. I’ve never worked or trained with Sean, but I get the mind set and quiet professionalism.

I really enjoyed your "how to set up an AR" video. This "the best gun for home defense" video calls forth some qualifications. First, this type of test has been run many times by many skilled experienced professionals over the last (?) 10 years. Most/many have concluded that M193 55 grain penetrates walls less than 9mm hollow point. Second, I agree about the shotgun conclusion. However, an M1014 (Benelli M4) with an EO on top and FlyteWad #1 buck might be fine at ranges less than 10 meters. Third, my own preference is for a 14.5 inch flash-suppressor-welded barrel in 300 BLK shooting (choices...) 190 or 205 subsonic hollow points. It's just a bit more than a 45ACP in power, but is much quieter even without a suppressor. Fourth (laugh), but serious: A home defender better be very sure he/she isn't committing a crime during the defense, including drug possession. A not-so-well-known Fed statute throws a mandatory 30 year sentence onto a crime during which a suppressor happened to be involved, even if no shot was fired through the thing. There, sorry, I'm finished. I do enjoy your vids.

Having the "interior walls" pressed flush against the "external wall" kind of makes the whole test of limited value. Having a space between the interior and exterior walls would better display what bullets do in the real world (eg tumble after the first wall, resulting in "keyholing"). I see what you're saying but you also have to think that the way they're doing it is the very minimum. I don't fault them. At minimum your bullet if going to go through 2 pieces of drywall on the inside, for 1 wall and then to the exterior. If you really wanted to nit pick, which there isn't a reason, is the fact that there isn't any insulation or wires or materials made weaker or stronger by age, mold or weather. So no real reason to nitpick. The bare minimum is 2 sheets of drywall then to the exterior. But now, if you nitpick, then you have the things in between your domicile and the other potential domicile of the other person. You have other walls that it may go through, if you shoot someone on the far end of the house, less likely to go through more than one wall but say you shoot someone as you're looking up your stairs, then you have different materials. Overall I think they should have just shot up a house to get the most accurate results and yeah, I'm pretty bored. Nitpicking is fun

I never considered the hands-free speaker phone option. Your voice might naturally wake family members as well. All in all, I really found the video very helpful. Thanks!

You don't want to "kick it across the room" You can just set it down to keep your hands free.

Thank you for your service, also for being a good man. Thank you for this info. Have you any experience with 410 home defense rounds. The Taurus Judge or the SW Govenor…. I’ve heard they are great for this exact issue. Load 2 410 Shells, then the rest the .45 shells just in case?

There is only one thing i would add regarding shotguns. While I agree that a pistol caliber carbine is probably the best, I think that with the right shotgun load, you can get minimal penetration. Paul Harrel got a great video about it.

Shawn, great video as always. Surprised to hear your findings & opinion. Pretty much anyone who carries a gun for a living or uses one for self defense wants to minimize collateral damage; why did the SEALs and all LEO agencies switch from the 9mm Mp5 to the AR15 / M4? Thanks!

Because you can get enemy standing more than a meter away, they even use a 45 as a side arm cos 9mm just don't pack the punch, would be sound for home an ccw tho

Oh snap. This is the kind of video that starts $#!+ *THE* best home defense weapon is the one you're proficient with. Get ammo, get training, blast baddies when the situation deems it necessary. Pistols are hard to shoot Shotguns are big and limited in capacity but hell-a strong. Rifles are LOUD af, and the round has the potential to say "hi" to your neighbors bedroom walls.... Pro's and Con's to each. Pick one. Get good!

@@ericvantassell6809 That's a dumb@$$ comment. No one is advocating for the use of .25 as a home defense tool.

The FBI actually switched from PCCs and SMGs to rifles because pistol rounds had a higher tendency to penetrate walls. Rifle rounds tended to disintegrate under such high velocities when hitting an exterior wall from the inside.

I support all three options. They all have options that reduce penetration. Even the AR has solid copper rounds that don't penetrate deep. But keep in mind less penetration can also be a issue. One thing for sure the shot gun is by far the most likely one shot stop option. The AR or 9mm pistol will give a higher capacity. Because most people miss under pressure

Man this reminds me of classic Shawn Ryan videos before he started the show. Don’t get me wrong I love the show but these videos were how I found him first and have a certain amount of nostalgia to me.

I know this an older video and I don't really expect a response. I am a former LEO, live alone and outside the city limits. I own numerous firearms (4 gun safes). For my night time protection beside my bed I have a 20 gauge "coach gun" loaded with #4 buckshot, no light and a Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm with a light. The shotgun will start things rolling and the 9mm with the light is for anything that is not taken care of by the shotgun. Do you think this is a solid set up for my situation? I truly respect your opinion and thank you for your service. My oldest daughter spent a year at FOB ADDER in Iraq. Thank you again for your service young man. And the 36 yard zero for the 5.56 was the video that got me to watching your channel, excellent information.
