The best hot hatches of the 1980s

Күн бұрын

While the 1970s was the decade that birthed the hot hatch and the 1990s really saw it explode into the mainstream, it was the 1980s that saw the major growth of the smallest sportscars in the world.
Following on from such cars as the first Volkswagen Golf GTI, the Renault 5 Alpine, Simca 1100 TI and Vauxhall HS Chevette, the hot hatch scene exploded in the decade of Thatcher, Reagan and the end of the Soviet Union. Stars included the Peugeot 205 GTI, Ford Escort RS Turbo, Renault 5 GT Turbo and second generation Golf GTI. Out of all the legions of hot hatches that emerged, these are our favourites.

He told me that he let his friend (who had a Sierra XR4x4) drive his 205 and after the drive he was shaking from how good it was. I'm only 19 and sadly will likely never experience a car like that. @@TheMich36 I have no issue with stating how old my Dad is - he's 56. I am into motorsport and cars because of my love of driving. The 205, Golf GTi and others aswell just capture every sensation that driving offers and heightens it to the tenth degree. I learnt to drive in an Ecoboost Fiesta with more power than a 205 GTi, crazy thought.

I had two AX GT's and loved them both. A 1988 burgundy mk1, with the yoghurt pot interior, and a 1992 red mk2 with the 'much improved' ZX style interior, which weighed more and never quite took my heart in the same way. I wish I still had Yog, my first ever car - I cried when it drove away.

Fiat Uno Turbo i.e (mk1)? I know they didn't have the same WRC punch as the Renault 5 Turbo, Peugeot 205 Gti, but there are people who've had great memories with them (people who have also owned 5 turbos and 205 gtis). I'm in the midst of collecting original parts for my rather rotten 1989 Fiat Uno Turbo i.e MK1 but I do feel that once it's done it'll still be "hot" or at least 1980's retro cool.

The dodge omni was originally a simca/Talbot horizon, or chrysler horizon in the UK, a car originally designed and build in France, the biggest engine in Europe though was the 1,4l "poissy" engine a quit efficient engine but could only develop 70hp, in America they had a shelby version doing 175hp, I have also heard the Australian had a 2,5l bi-turbo. Also, the car was based on a simca 1100, which coincidently was also the first hot hatch ever historically with the simca 1100 ti, note that the horizon was an inspiration for the Talbot sunbeam, which had a lotus version, a quite efficient design, the french however had a concept of the horizon based on the 205 gti when peugeot bought them back in 1978

Honda's are overrated. Also I believe the hot hatch civic from the 80's or CR's were not sold in the UK car market

How can you not feature or even show a photo of the original Mk1 Golf GTI, arguably the original hit hatch when you briefly feature the Fiesta Supersport, fore runner of the XR2 and brief shots of an Astra GTE mk1 ? It sold from 1979 to 1984 so undoubtedly an eighties hit hatch. This unfortunately lets the video down.

The 205 GTI was okay but a lot were written off..The steering wheel and tyres looked too big for the size of the car..The 309 GTI 1.9 was better okay it didn't look as good but it had better handling and they are very rare today.
