The Best Jeep Wrangler Ever Made
LJ? JL? We Take Them On The Rubicon To Find Out
What is the best Jeep Wrangler of all time? That is a hotly contested title, but two of the most common answers are the 03-06 Jeep Wrangler LJ and the 17-current Jeep Wrangler JL. The LJ (technically a TJ Unlimited) was the first Jeep to wear the “Wrangler Unlimited” moniker and the JL is the latest… and greatest? Both variants are long wheelbase Jeeps in the tradition of the venerable CJ6 and CJ8 Scrambler, providing a better ride on the road and the ability to climb tall obstacles off-road due to their increased stability. What better place to compare and contrast these two Jeeps than the Rubicon Trail?
Both have solid axles, coil springs, removable tops, and both of these Jeeps are Rubicons that came from the factory with 4:1 transfer cases and Dana 44s front and rear with locking differentials. There are arguably more differences than similarities though.
LJ Advantages:
• Lighter weight
• Smaller dimensions
• Less electronics
• Better approach angle
This particular LJ has a rare AEV Highline kit that allows us to run 37-inch Nitto Trail Grapplers with only 2.5-inch lift springs from Skyjacker. The rest of the suspension consists of JKS control arms, JKS air bumps, and 2.5-inch diameter King remote reservoir shocks that have been custom tuned by Samco Fabrication. The factory Dana 44 axles have been upgraded with 5.38 Motive Gears and Alloy USA chromoly axle shafts to live with the 37-inch Nitto Trail Grapplers, and the front knuckles were swapped to WJ units that use bigger brakes and raise to the drag link. The Jeep doesn’t have hydraulic assist steering, but it does have a PSC Big Bore steering box, pump, and remote reservoir that have no issues turning the 37-inch Trail Grapplers. The Jeep brand has taken several from AEV’s playbook over the years. The Gladiator looks eerily similar to the JK Brute, and the new JL can fit 37s with only two inches of lift thanks to the taller fenders. These are a direct result of AEV’s influence on the brand.
JL Advantages:
• Four doors
• Way more power
• Eight speed automatic is a game changer
• Disconnecting sway bar
You will likely recognize this JL from the recovery video we did previously. It belongs to our friends from ROCO 4x4 in Miami, but they are currently storing it on the West Coast so they can do some wheeling out here this summer. This Jeep has about every upgrade you could want on a JL. The factory Dana 44 axles will live with 37-inch tires, but ROCO’s JL has 40-inch Nitto Trail Grapplers on it. To run that large of tire, the factory axles were replaced with Ultimate Dana 60 crate axles. There are a bunch of bolt-in axle options for the JL that retain the factory speed sensors and ABS so your dash doesn’t turn into a Christmas tree with all of the warning lights illuminated. The eight speed is definitely our favorite feature on the JL, and in our opinion the biggest upgrade over the previous generation JK. Like the LJ, this JL has JKS control arms front and rear. It also has Fox coilovers with remote reservoirs, Poison Spyder Customs front and rear bumpers, a SPOD control panel, and Rock Slide Engineering sliders with retractable steps that make getting in and out of the Jeep so much easier.

@@infiniteepoch8 start with what you want to do with the Jeep you are going to purchase ie. is it going to be a daily, or off-roader, or a weekend warrior. Look at your budget and choose what best fits your needs... if you want a project there are tons of flattie’s (not the best choice if you are tall), YJ’s are great but both of the above a leaf sprung and could take some getting used to if you have not driven a leaf sprung vehicle before. TJs are coils and a more familiar ride to previous suv owners. The jk (stay away form the 3.8) longer wheel base smoother ride. JL and jeep truck I’m not sure About because I have not driven either one yet.

I'm amazed how my LJ is _always_ getting compliments, even though it generally looks like crap compared to every other Jeep I ever see. The work I've done to it over the years is mostly understated function over form stuff. It's my Big Dumb Tractor, my Lego car. It's fun, it's useful, it growls, it climbs and hauls and tows, and I guess it does look pretty damn cool. Could use some new paint, and I don't want to think about what new KO2s are gonna cost me soon, but I love it. . Edit to add: even with no Rubicon package in 04, no suspension or body lift, and *_only_* 31" tires (all apparently ludicrous to most Wrangler owners)... it does the job in the desert, the snow, the mud, the mountains, the woods, the highways, and the suburbs. I've never needed a rescue (but have pulled others out) and have towed and hitched-mounted a variety of trailers and racks with no problem. Though stock height, I have tons of clearance from flat fenders and 15" alloys with no offset, and somehow it does _look_ lifted - I don't plan on crawling walls and boulders. The 4.0 makes more than enough power with a Magnaflow exhaust and Banks intake and throttle body, and I've got a fiberglass hood, simple frameless soft top, and half doors keeping some weight down. I've had my problems (ripped all the A/C out, ditched a custom ECU box, rust is always a fight), but I've easily customized so much of the rest of the unseen stuff (like undercarriage and wiring) that i feel like I can trust it. That's the most important thing to me these days by FAR, with my other cars breaking down left and right, including new ones. It also doesn't hurt that it's so much fun to drive - I even left the windshield down, doors off, and cage half-removed last summer. The kids loved it!

And like it or not, the introduction of the 4 door on the JKU has been a very significant game changer for Wranglers and the people who buy them. I know it's completely different, but to me the JLU is really nothing more than a much needed updated version of the JKU. Come on Harry put a 4 inch lift under the LJ and get some approach angles. I loved my tj and just started my orange lj rubicon like yours. Everything getting replaced and renewed since it has 200k on it. Amazing how nice it is for so many miles and I am excited about owning such an icon.

Don’t ruin that Jeep. It’s already highly collectible - do your research. Not that you’ll ever sell it, but it will be good to keep as many of these unicorns on the road. You will screw nothing up, and have all the fun you could want on 33”s, especially since you mentioned being on a budget. As long as you get at least 4” of true lift (like a 2” BB and a 4” spring) you won’t need to regear, extend anything, or make any other fitment mods. Spend the $$ on good skids/armor underneath, and you’ll have a classic you can wheel. If you find yourself wanting to go more extreme, you’ll just put yourself in situations to ruin the rare Jeep you have. Buy any of the dime-a-dozen newer platforms that won’t go up in value like your LJ, and butcher that one up, lol. Or get an older TJ if you like the ability to wrench on the engine yourself - can’t beat that straight-6 tractor motor. If you have only one Jeep, never get rid of that LJ, lol. You can always get the newer stuff, and cheaper. Only the LJ has (or will) appreciate in value. And if it’s all you have to wheel - you can have plenty of adventure. Trust me - one day you’ll hand your kid off what every consensus agrees is the “best Jeep ever made.” Cheers, and Happy Trails.

For sure Brian. These just happened to be the two Jeeps I had at my disposal. Honestly with the size of the JK and JL I think that you need 40s and tons to go where the smaller lighter LJ goes on 37s.

Jeep fucked up when they went from the TJ to the JK imo. They should have stretched the wheelbase of the 2 door to be comparable to that of the LJ moving forward. 4 doors are too long and 2 doors need an axle stretch when you go up to 40s, the LJ was just in that sweetspot and jeep should have recognized that moving forward. Who knows though, maybe they'll think of that in future generations or if the JL gets a mid gen redesign like the JK did.
