Been juicing for 30+ years. Try 1.5-2lbs of carrots, 2 celery stalks and a green apple. Put some ice in the pitcher while you juice. Not only does the ice chill the juice, the couple tablespoons of water from the ice enhances the flavor. After a minute in the pitcher and a good stir, pour the juice from the ice. And save the Kale for the Vitamix.

Hi ATK, if you want to cut down on that backlight in Hannah’s kitchen that sometimes flares the lens, pick up some Rosco neutral density gels (.6 or .9 or 1.2 ) from a photo supplier , tape them over the window above the oven. That will cut down the sunlight. Love the tool reviews! 😀 - Eric

*I was happy to see my Breville take the trophy.* The model I bought a decade ago is slightly different but I absolutely love it. Everyone advised me to get a masticating juicer but the thing is I actually like to reuse the pulp. Not only does my dog love the pineapple and watermelon that comes out the other end... but you can use the pulp to make zucchini bread or banana nut bread etc. It just takes some balancing and experimenting. Someone I know was moving internationally and was getting rid of their Breville so I took it in so now I have two at two different locations. There's only one thing I don't like about these large juicers. I've always had dishwashers which I rarely use but oh, my, you really need a dishwasher to get these parts clean afterwards. My second Breville is at a weekend hut and we do not have a dishwasher there and I will admit sometimes I've actually taken it to the back stoop and hosed It off!

I have a Cuisinart centrifugal juicer, and a Slow Star that works lke the Omega upright masticating juicer, and I have and love the Juice Man electric citrus juicer that is also a must have. I retired the Cuisinart and plan on giving it to someone who will use it. It is a great juicer, but I prefer the masticating one better.

Tried the Breville a few years ago; it did great, but it did leak a little bit (probably a slight manufacturing defect). We replaced it with a Jack LaLane Fusion Juicer 100 Year Anniversary Edition, which did just as good, has no leaks so far, but has more nooks & crannies to clean.

The Dash model is a generic design shared by dozens of manufacturers. I have juiced citrus most every morning of my life. The problem of the high-line juicers are the price, replacement cost and difficulty cleaning. The manual juicers do not allow you any pulp...no pulp in the juice is an anathema for me. But the Black & Decker I have is the Dash design and it has variable openings for the amount of pulp you want. The only detraction I find with the Dash design is the noise...they are loud. If the family is asleep, wait until they are up. And at $17, the Dash design is almost a disposable unit. They last me about 3 years then I get a new one.

A little noisy, yes, but after 50 years with my classic Proctor-Silex juicer (the porcelain reamer, plastic bowl, and strainer go into the dishwasher), that sound is music meaning "breakfast is ready!" I tire of equipment that subtracts time from preparation and adds it to cleanup. The generic, old-fashioned electric reamers you are talking about are time savers from prep to clean up! I adore mine.

For the masticating juicer, have you checked how much pulp is produced? I had a Huron version and it was so pulpy. That’s fine with citrus but not great with carrots where it’s just gritty.

Regarding the citrus juicer options, I've destroyed a couple smaller low end juicers with extended use and have more recently become a fan of the "Buy It For Life" strategy. I find myself buying increasingly expensive commercial grade gear because I never want to throw something out over a failed o-ring or discontinued cheap plastic gear. Does the Breville have replacement parts or a service/repair network?

We love how analytical and thorough ATK makes a recipe instruction, equipment review, or taste test. On this episode, however, ATK failed to give me what my analytical brain needed. What did the Dash juicer yield with the same 1 orange and 1 grapefruit juicing? Was it the same 1c as the Breville, more, or less?

Missing from the evaluation are the juicing attachments for the Kitchenaid stand mixers. We have several citrus trees in our yard. Each year, we juice and freeze several gallons of tangerine, lemon, and orange juice. All of this is done with either the Fruit and Vegetable Strainer or the Citrus Juicer attachments. (We use the Citrus Juicer for the oranges and lemons. The tangerines are so small, they juice better in the Fruit and Vegetable Strainer.) Both attachments do a good, but certainly not perfect, job. Would a dedicated juicer, or two, do a better job? Possibly, but that would require storing another machine or two. The two attachments are easier to store and do a much better than adequate job. Yes, a dedicated juicer MIGHT do a better job. But, we only use them -- albeit intensively -- a few days each year.

I actually have the KitchenAid Citrus Juicer attachment. Only thing I don't really like about that one is it's kind of awkward as it's situated sideways. My Chef'n broke because the top lever is made of plastic and has a failure point where the plastic can snap where it touches the metal cup. Williams Sonoma's Citrus Press is completely metal on the top level and seems to solve this issue, and it has a very nice attachable juice cup on the bottom. It's exorbitantly expensive of course, but it's significantly better.

Not much detail on how user-friendly each type of citrus juicer is. It looks like the manual juicer needs a fair amount of hand strength to squeeze it. You say the slow vertical masticator has only small openings? You did not test any of the large mouth ones! I have a BioChef Whole Quantum and it has a 3" chute opening. I can put apples, beets, lemons, .... into it whole. I can put an entire celery stalk into it without cutting it up if I follow it with something like a carrot. The juice that comes out of it is not whipped up with air like the centrifugal models. So yes I can keep a juice in the refrigerator for a week without oxygen destroying it. I will juice a batch of apples and we have hot apple cider every night. And grapefruit, orange, .... does an incredible job! Just remove the skin first. Which peels off. Or we make a batch of lemon/limeade. Smoothies, Lassies, ....

@@aljay2955 I can completely clean and have the parts sitting drying in under 10 minutes. As short as 5 if I rush. My previous high speed juicer had fewer parts but lots of little spaces that took forever to clean. And depending on what I am juicing, I can go from one juicing to the next just by running a cup of water through it. e.g. do a batch of apples first, then water then my veggie lunch of carrots, beet, celery, spinach, cabbage, cucumber, garlic. And because it is slow speed the juice stays fresh for days in the fridge. So I don't have to use it as often.

@@just3cats115 Thank you! I spend hours and hours every week, as do the rest of our team of testers, actually handling and using and testing every kind of kitchen gear before we make our recommendations. Nobody sponsors our testing, and we pay for all of the products we test and buy them at retail. We don't accept any free samples for testing, and we are not advertiser-supported, so we can be completely honest. If we hate it, we can say it.

When I saw the thumbnail for this video I got all excited and clicked on it thinking it was going to have some great recipes for gym rats / meat heads. I'm a little disappointed, now.

I'm so sorry! On ATK Gearheads, we focus on the equipment, i.e. the gear, not the recipes. But our company, America's Test Kitchen, also develops thoroughly tested recipes and I know our cookbooks division is coming out with some titles this year that may be just what you're looking for. (Not sure how much I can reveal yet!)

I don't have room for a juicer, don't make juice every day. If you have a small family a juicer us somerhing you do NOT need.

This is a terrible review. Centrifugal is good for juicing juicy fruits like oranges, strawberries, celery, peaches. Masticating juicer is best for dryer or soild vegs like carrots, leafy greens, etc.

I went into Subway today to get a healthy sandwich. The older lady behind the counter helped me and started preparing my sandwich for me. She out of nowhere fell to the ground and started convulsing and shaking. the other teenage girl there just stepped over her and finished up my sandwich as the lady lay on the ground shaking. The two teenage girls that work there just laughed it off and said "Oh, she does this all the time." I peeked over the counter to see the lady foaming at her mouth. I then paid for my sandwich and left the establisment.
