This video will teach you how to tie possibly one of the best fishing knot for heavy monofilament or fluorocarbon line, the Centauri Knot (as a bonus, we will also go over when NOT to use this knot!) This is one of the most widely used fishing knots when tying heavy line (mono or flouro!) and can be used to catch anything from trout, perch, salmon, red snapper, tuna, mackerel... basically anything you catch with a hook can be caught using this knot! It doesn't get easier. Subscribe for more knots and tips, and thanks for watching!
Quick disclaimer: This is but one of many methods to successfully tie this knot, and it happens to be the best one I have found! I hope it works equally well for you, but if it doesn't, or if you have found something else that works better, I encourage you to stick to what works for you! I would always recommend practicing the knots and testing their strength yourself to ensure you are comfortable with how they work, and to avoid flinging lures into the ocean on a failed knot (ask me how I know!). Knots take practice, so make sure you're comfortable with whatever you're tying prior to trusting it with your gear! If you have any questions about the knot, please post them below and I will do my best to answer them. I hope this is helpful, and tight lines!

I've been using this knot since 1977. But I do 5 loops just for insurance. I've never had this knot fail. I don't know how many Palomar knots I've had break or pull out on me. Likewise, I was using the triline knot for a while until I figured out the triline knot and the Centauri knot are pretty much the same thing, Just different steps to accomplish the same outcome.

I have to be honest here: I watch a lot of knot vids. I think this is hands down the best Centauri knot video that I've come across so far Your steps are exactly what I follow with a few tweaks to make the cinching simple with 150# fluro. I use pliers on the tag end for the final cinching down, and use a Thirty Fathoms Knot Puller (tweaked by adding a snap & split ring to cover fresh water sizes). The knot has never failed me. While learning it, I had to make it a point where I pinch the knot. That was part of the learning curve. Before starting to cinch it really mattered that the tag end is on top of the loops & the main line is on the bottom so they run sorta parallel to each other...observing it helped me get them almost flawlessly completed...Uber strong knots! Excellent video! ...Uber strong knots!

Why is it that when i pull on the tag end, the loop to the hook opens back up?
@norwegianguy9480

I use this knot for all my fishing. If you pull the line through a fly wich has an upward or downward bendt hookeye, make a loop and tie the knot, you can pull the knot to the fly and pull the loop over the fly. Pull tight. It is way better than thurle and double thurle.

This is the knot we used when rock climbing. The main knot was a figure 8 then the tag of the figure 8 got tied into the knot you demonstrated. I'll give this a try. I just learned the tuna knot last night but it takes a lot of force to set well. I might use the figure 8 for jigs which need a lot of action.

Should add a few wraps above these loops on the main line then go through the loops and pull. Shouldn’t be able to come lose. Kinda a improve the Trilene knot.

Using lighter line, it's much, much easier to wrap the line around your finger then pull the loops off to make that final pass through. Trying to form those loops with 10 lb line is a nightmare. The finger wraps work much better. Just sayin'
@JustTheLip
@JustTheLip Жыл бұрын
That makes a lot of sense! I have to admit I haven’t tied this one much on light line, so I appreciate the tip! Thanks for watching!
@philnelson940
@philnelson940 10 ай бұрын
I agree. Been using this knot for years in a range of line strengths, and wrapping around your finger works really well. Just don't wrap too tightly or you can't pull your finger out ! You can use 4 loops (rather than 3) and/or you can run the line through the hook eye twice for a bit of extra safety.

@davidgregory4889

That finish is not quite correct. The very 1st loop should be pulled through the other 2 lops to the front and then a figure 8 forms which is tightened up...

All I tie is two square knots and that’s it. Never fails. All these other knots are unnecessary.
@JustTheLip
@JustTheLip Жыл бұрын
If it works for you, that's great! There are situations where the square knot may not have the necessary strength, and some people prefer to use more fishing-oriented knots. I wouldn't say other knots are unnecessary, they're just used in different situations! Thank you for watching!
@pakde8002

Coincidentally I watched a video on tying a figure of eight for heavy line and stranded wire. He tied it exactly like this knot except he only used two wraps (loops) and before cinching he twisted the loops to form the figure of eight. Therefore this could be considered an improved figure of eight knot. Also, not to be contrary but if you only use the figure eight it seems to me you're doing very specific fishing and basic fishing, which is fine but there are other types of tackle with specialty knots and if you're limited to a square knot you will absolutely limit your chances. This is a fact, not merely an opinion.
