The Best Knot For Jigs (Easy & Strong Loop Knot)

A lot of people ask me, "What's the best knot to use with the Slam Shady?"
There are tons of different types of knots, but when you're talking about knots to tie to a hook or jig, they all fall into two categories:
1. Snug knots
2. Loop knots
Snug knots are stronger and are best for when you don't need to put action on your bait or lure, such as if you're using live bait.
Loop knots, on the other hand, are best for when you want to maximize the action on your lure to get more strikes, such as if you're using a paddletail, jerk shad, or topwater.
As far as which loop knot I recommend, check out this video.
It’s strong, the loop allows for great action, and when you tie it right, the tag end faces forward, which makes it much less likely to snag grass as you’re retrieving it.

So much easier and quicker than the "non-slip loop knot" that everyone else is showing with the 6 wraps. Gonna try it right now. Two wraps n thru/done! Nice.

I've been tying that loop knot for 50 years and you are the first one I've seen tie it besides the grand kids I've taught it to ! I only fish for crappie on 4 lb test so I do wrap the main line 4 x but still the same knot ! Bravo !

I’ve been using those ZMAN jig heads and Slam Shady swimbaits and fishing at night successfully 👍😜 and I use this loop knot on my top water lures, but forgot all about using it on my jigs…. LOVE IT 😜🎣✊

Excellent info! That weedless loop knot is awesome. It's in my knot arsenal. I only use about a handful of knots. Uni knot, loop knot, palamore, snell knot, dropper loop and your basic over hand knot.

Great knot, it does make a difference having the jighead able to swing freely, i use lefty's loop for the same reason

@@mikewright8328 make the same granny knot, then pull that loop down to the hook and cover it with your thumb and forefinger. Then tie a clinch knot, and when improving it, take it through the granny knot loop, pull tight

The knots are tied correctly and very good instruction however the invention of the tactical angler power clip and duo locks makes it really simple where you don't have to retie if changing lures. The Duo lock is also very easy for lead head fishing giving the lead head a natural motion . All you do is match the size power clip or lock to the size lure or lead head. The non slip loop knot for Saltwater come in handy for live bait presentations as ringed hooks are pretty expensive.

@feeshyfeeshy Were fishing for California halibut and striped bass from the surf. As where jigging for the halibut, individual striped bass will suddenly show up requiring a hardbait lure . . We also have a one rod rule in effect for our region . So to make the swap out in seconds were using power clips. We also use the power clip to snap on a pretied drop shot rig for the halibut and will make the quick swap out when we see a striped bass.

I'm spoiled with my tactical angler power clips. I change lures way too often but this looks pretty quick and easy as a backup just in case I run out.

HelloGeno thats what i use also. I use the smaller ones for inshore, bay fishing and have no issues. For fluke fishing, i have the bucktail on the bottom and just pass the loop through the eye of the Bt and then pass the bt through the loop so its easy jig changes

There is a huge difference, i have demonstrated them in tanks at boatshows. They fall naturally instead of stiffly for weights up to 3/4oz

Try a dry lift with as much weight as you can till it breaks at the knot, Not try tying the new knot under water, than do a dry lift and see the weight difference when the knot breaks, it will shock you. Great tutorial, thx.

Yes, a clip can get the desired motion too. But it'll increase the odds of the more wary fish to not strike because they can see something that looks odd in the lure's profile, so we do not recommend anything metal that's not essential.

Depends on depth, 1/8 oz jighead for shallows (1-2ft), 1/4 oz jighead for deeper water(3-5ft)and so on.

When you go back down through the loop you want to go in the opposite direction that you brought it up through right?

The key is to follow the lines into the loop... on the way down, the tag end should thread through the loop from the opposite side in order to follow the lines.

That's one that I have not yet tried out. I see that it leaves the tag end pointing up towards the rod which is one ding against it relative to this non-slip loop knot. But its design may very well have a higher breaking point.

Great knot have used this for years. Plus there are others very similar to your knot Question why should I get a Micro power pole for back country fishing. I see you don’t have one on your Kayak. It would stop from being pulled into the mangroves????

Not usually. We usually tie the leader to the braid with an FG knot, uni knot, etc.

We do not recommend this knot for braid. If you decide to use braid directly to a lure, the line is so flexible that you don't need to use a loop... just go with a snug knot like the Uni.

Yes, this knot tested out to be slightly stronger than the canoe man knot and I find it easier to tie too (but that likely is due to using this knot for many years).

Yes, the salinity of water does not have an impact on the knots.

you mention that you use 10 lbs. braid main line. Do you have a video discussing that? It seems kind of small to me. Also, I have found the lighter braid seems to bird nest on me.

What I've found to work best for inshore fishing is 10 lb line rigged on spinning tackle... a nice 7'6" rod with 10 lb braid will cast most inshore lures farther than baitcasting setups. If you're using baitcasting, the 10 lb braid is probably too thin and will cause more harm than good... I go with 30 lb braid on my baitcasting setups, but I only use them for throwing heavy lures because spinning does so much better with anything under 1/2 oz.
