What is the best laser lens for you when you are working on your projects? The answer isn’t as simple as it seems. Most laser manufacturers will provide a selection of lens with varying focal lengths usually from about 1.5” to 5” or more and depending on your project you may want to choose a lens with a different focal length than your normal “go to” lens. Why?
In this video I’ll walk you through some high level theory on laser lenses and why you might want one vs another and then should how to change the lens in your laser. Finally I show a couple of examples from different lenses to help you appreciate the differences.

Great video. Have you noticed having to slow the cut or use more passes to cut through plywood using the 5” lens? I also get more burn. Thanks
@SteveMakesEverything
@SteveMakesEverything 2 жыл бұрын
Each lens will have it's own unique settings. I use a 2" lens normally so I can't really comment on the 5" one. Logically since the focus region is longer, there is probably more opportunity for burning though if the settings aren't spot-on.

Thanks for taking the time to make this. I'm a CNC guy looking to add Laser. I could add a laser to my current setup or purchase a separate unit, many scenarios here as we know. I totally forgot about holding the stock, or not! With regards to the Muse, I contacted then to explain the difference between the 4K & 6.5K models? Is the more expensive really worth it to you, Is this like having an expensive auto probe for the cnc end-mill maybe? (assume work area is irrelevant, power output, etc). Again, thanks for sharing your time & experience.

While I love the camera on my Muse 3D, I have a feeling that features like autofocus really don't use it or need to use it. With modern stepper drivers it's pretty easy to use current detection to determine a hard limit and I suspect that's what FSL is doing. However the camera helps a lot with maximizing material usage because it is very accurate at capturing what is on the workspace and make positioning trivial. Most of the added capability in the Muse 3D vs the regular Muse are definitely not essential to the operation of the laser, but are very nice conveniences. The 3D has spoiled me for autofocus and workspace camera imaging, which is why I now have a focus probe and a camera on my DIY laser, though they aren't nearly as good as the Muse 3D features.

Enjoy your videos! I have FSlaser pro24, and am considering a new Muse titan. Do you have any concerns about the long term reliability of the massive laser tube moving constantly herky-jerky versus its stationary position in the PRO series. Also, does your lens need more frequent cleaning due to being exposed on the MUSE? Thanks. DCZ.
@SteveMakesEverything
@SteveMakesEverything 2 жыл бұрын
The mounting technique used on the Titan was the same way a GlowForge does. While I suspect FSL shapes the acceleration profile so movements aren't so jolting, I doubt that there's any real concern. As far as cleaning, I don't think it matters that the optics are more open. This assumes of course that you have a solid exhaust fan to pull smoke out so it doesn't linger. Cutting/Engraving lasers are just naturally dirty places, so a regular cleaning routine is essential anyway.

It’s been a while without seeing your channel and I was wondering how’s your Muse 3D laser cutter doing? Would you bought it again or another brand when the time comes? Thanks
@SteveMakesEverything
@SteveMakesEverything 2 жыл бұрын
I still love it! It's got the right balance of ease-of-use and capability. The glowforge definitely wins on "easy" and a Chinese K40 wins on flexibility but the Muse is balanced in the middle. I am building a larger laser at the moment but that isn't a reflection on my Muse. I just needed something that could handle larger commercial projects and had more power for thicker materials.

Hi Steve. As always, I enjoy each of your vids. My laser is properly aligned, but I'm now not able to cut 1/4" anything! I notice a bit of a larger hole on the lense and wonder if that could be the cause? What settings are you using on your muse? Maybe I can adapt them. One last question: are the lenses that are 50% less expensive than those of FSL just as good! Thanks so much!
@SteveMakesEverything
@SteveMakesEverything 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Sally, good to hear from you. If you have a mark on the lens, maybe it's time for a replacement - they do eventually need to be replaced. You can source them from FSL for sure, but you might also want to check Cloudray because theirs will be a lot cheaper. If I remember correctly the Muse and PS use 20mm mirrors and even these higher end Si ones (amzn.to/3zWlab9) are cheaper for a set of 3 than FSL charges for a single lower grade Mo mirror

@@SteveMakesEverything Steve, do I need a mirror lens of just the focus lens. Thanks!
@SteveMakesEverything
@SteveMakesEverything 2 жыл бұрын
@@sallyann-nicolemiller5625 You probably don't need any lens unless yours has obvious damage. It's most likely the mirror set you want (These ones: amzn.to/3y11GAF). Just verify your mirror diameter before you order, but I believe they are 20mm. If the lens has damage then you might need that as well/instead but Cloudray has those too - just get the right focal length.

Shorter focal length lens' can give you an hour glass cut in thicker materials as well.
@SteveMakesEverything
@SteveMakesEverything 2 жыл бұрын
Correct for sure, though if you do multi-pass cuts and drop the focus between passes you can mitigate this a bit.
