Drama, Drama Watch the entire video!
Less than 24 hours after killing and devouring a buffalo, the old Mluwati Male and his five sons are back at it.
This time, it was just instinctual nature.
Even though they weren't hungry, they were compelled to hunt when a small buffalo herd approached their domain at the Kumana Dam in South Africa's Kruger National Park.
The two Fourways males and the Torchwood male currently control the Mazithi and Leeupan lion prides. But in the last few months, they have been pushing further north, being seen in between the S86 and Kumana dam in Central Kruger National Park on several occasions. It appeared they were expanding their territory.
The Kumana lion pride was previously controlled by the two Mluwati male lions.
A couple of days ago, we filmed one of the Fourways males in the company of the Kumana pride and with new cubs.
It now makes sense why they were spending so much time further north.
It will be interesting to see if the three males manage to keep control of all three prides now that they have an even larger territory to patrol.
The blonder Mluwati male appears to have disappeared a while back, with no recent sightings of him in the last year. It seemed only a matter of time before the remaining Mluwati male would lose control of the Kumana pride. He has been frequently seen in the last couple months with several of his eight sons, who appear to have left the Kumana pride as well.
GAME DRIVE ETIQUETTE - RULES (SANParks):
- When you come across a sighting, slowly pull over on the side of the road closest to the animal, but keep a safe distance and turn OFF your engine
- If there are animals in the road, immediately stop at least 20 m from them
- The lane furthest from the sighting should NEVER be blocked, so that others can pass if they want to
- Don’t linger longer than a few minutes at a sighting, so that others can view it too
- Never go off the designated roads
- Never climb out of your vehicle during a drive, or hang out of your car windows or sunroof
- Don’t hoot or blare loud music
- Avoid driving into vegetation, as this could damage the environment or kill small animals
- During night drives, never shine a spotlight directly in animals’ eyes
- Never make noise to get animals to move, stand up or otherwise react for pictures
- Respect the rangers, and always comply with their requests or instructions

@UriahGiles - It's incredible to witness the teamwork among the lions. Nature has its way of dispelling myths, and this video certainly challenges the notion that male lions are lazy. The coordinated effort of the lion family showcases their hunting skills and the division of roles within the pride.

@xneapolisx - I agree, the buffalo was definitely facing a tough situation with a broken leg. Nature can be brutal, and the lions target the weak and injured as it increases their chances of a successful hunt. It's a stark reminder of the harsh reality of the wild.

If what you are saying is true, that would be amazing. It means fewer male lions will die when they become adolescents and more herbivores will be eaten. These herbivores outnumber lions by at least 100:1 if not more, don't ever feel bad when they become food for these majestic big cats.

The last buffalo to leave the scene had no tail. If you look at how the large male lion avoided the scene altogether and how that buffalo kept looking at him apprehensively shows that they have crossed paths for years and that male lion may know something about the buffalo's lost tail.

It is quite rare that father lion and his almost adult sons remain in coalition and are working together. But from human perspective I like it best. Conflicts and fighting inside lion family does not make them any stronger Number of wild lions decrease constantly and one reason is fights between lions, high percentage of cub mortality before they even become adults. Lions should learn how to minimize fights and conflicts between lions. There are millions of wild herbivores in Africa, plenty of room and food for every predator.
