Is this the best, most compact lock picking EDC? I think it just might be! 😃👍 What do you think? How does yours differ? Did I miss something? Let me know in the comments!
After many requests, i thought I’d put links to some of the equipment I used here in the description. Sadly things like the cigar tube are not on sale and the roll case i got off ebay isn’t available either. Good news is that there are so many other options available out there for you, so go get creative and make something that suits you 😃😃👍
Remember: only pick locks that are yours and that are not in use! Keep locksport legal!

Excellent selection ! I would just add one thing... an EZ Decoder for combination lock. And eventually comb picks just because they take very little space and can open basic padlocks faster than anything else. My personal EDC is: a pair of Bogotas and the goat wrench. I won’t do as much as with your selection but can still open many locks with tools that fits in my wallet.

@@ts757arse It's pretty common for locks to pick differently in each direction. But you probably know that. So a plug spinner might come in handy if the easiest direction is the wrong rotation. Or if you're uncertain which direction to pick in order to unlock for instance a door and your guess is wrong. You probably knew that to. There are space-efficient spinners out there. How good are they? Don't know. Mine is to big to fit in my EDC, a bit of a bummer, but I usually carry a bag anyway and the spinner goes there. It doesn't weigh much.

@@ts757arse lol I know, but it's true I've done it. You just put the rubber band on your tension tool and hold the tensioner with one hand so it doesn't move yet. The loop the other end of the band around the pencil and stretch the band tightly way beyond the locking point of the lock. Press the pencil eraser against another surface so it doesn't slip around and release the end of the tension tool. The rubber band, if tight enough and positioned correctly, should fling the tensioner past the locking point faster than the pins can fall :)

On the disc detainers - I was at the local market (southern UK) this morning, and the cheap tool stall had two pin tumbler padlocks and seven or eight variations on the disc detainer. At the ‘locking up the shed’ end of the market, I think they’re taking over.

I'd honestly leave the lock disassembly tools out of my EDC kit. I'm not a lock smith and I don't know when I would possibly use them "in the wild". Add a Mini Jim and perhaps some tools for lever locks, jiggler keys and some warded-lock tools. Padlock shims (the black Sparrows/Southord ones) are a must. And a selection of pry bars (Multipick has a nice set). I have an ABUS driver and it only works on ONE lock in my collection - and that lock can be opened easily with just about any other by-pass method available. I'd leave it out (though I keep my in my EDC-kit... just in case, so, nevermind). I bought Sparrows "The Ranger Set" and have added stuff to it. Compact, practical. I could also fit "the tool LPL and BB made" into it as well as the dimple pick tool you have. I forgot one tool - Deviant Ollam, as well as LPL have shown it. It's a spring powered hammer to knock out hinge pins. I've got that one too in my EDC-kit.

Very well thought out. Obviously a kit focused on picking, not pen testing. Those are really two different orientations, with some overlap. I use a much smaller flashlight with a piece of poly tubing slipped over, for holding in my teeth when necessary. I guess I would consider that a "go bag" kit, rather than an EDC. I think of EDC as something small enough to go along with my wallet, keys (which also has my flashlight and pen knife) and cell phone. Those South Ord picks look awesome... I would consider making dimple tips to go with that. I love the 'ahem' cigar case... very useful storage.

Warded picks. A bit of mylar. Maybe a handful of pins in the tube if you want to repin something, as you already have everything else. TOK tensioners. Some shims.

I would add a set of combs, but that depends on what you what to do with the kit - pick locks, or open locks. But if you pack the bypass drivers, you might as well pack some combs. Also, I would like some pry bars, but that's a personal preference. I C ED a pocket knife pick, a SouthOrd clone. Then I have a SouthOrd case in which I keep a couple of picks, most notably the SSDev trio, and a lot of tensioners. I like (or I did, before all this corona sh!t) to pick during my commute, so I don't carry any tools to disassemble locks.

I notice quite a few 'cylindrical objects' in your set - you could make it all more compact if you could have fewer, more multi - purpose cylinders. Can't remember whether you own a lathe - you could do some 'editing' if so, maybe... Just brainstorming here :o)

My EDC is a Sparrows Dark Shift pick set with the extension set. I added a set of warded picks, a few extra tension wrenches and a homemade decoder. My idea on an EDC kit is the minimum kit I would need to handle at least 90% of the locks encounter. Virtually all the locks I encounter on a daily basis that I might need to pick are either pin tumbler or wafer locks. Where I work, if I have to pick a lock I have no need to gut them. I just replace them. Most of them are pretty cheap locks too, so I don’t need more specialized tools. I usually end up picking cabinet locks, door locks or padlocks. Nothing high security.

You did mention shims, which are useful and would fit easily. What about the Peterson knife or similar? A magnet would be useful. Well thought out. I'd add small and powerful neodimiym magnets for electronic locks. I make at the moment pen testing device based on raspberry pi zero w and arduino uno. But it's too nerdy in terms of getting right electronics components and programming , as it's too much extensive in what it does. Similar to "Flipper" that's made and collected 4 mid usd in crowdfunding. :)

I think the neodymium magnets need their own space for 2 reasons. for 1 if you add multiple magnets to the kit they're already attracted to eachother let alone any other magenetically sensitive types of metals which most lockpicking tools would contain. And 2 for travelling and signal interference. Still a great idea to have them along, just not actually in the pack itself.
@s0men00bb
@s0men00bb 2 жыл бұрын
@@alleycatlordoflunes9689 , right. :) However , I've got few magnetic keys for interactive lock elements or fully magnetic locks , like EVVA MCS , and , it is impressive how much tiny , powerful magnets they managed to pack into key blade. :) And they use small plastic sleeves to keep them out from metal parts and other keys from being attracted to everything that contain iron inside. And the sleeves do perfect job at doing it. Also , picking tools are mostly from stainless steel which is also weak at attracting magnets. :) To confirm it , just tested it against my watch , which is 316L (there's also 316H) marine grade steel. Tho , I'm not sure how marine grade steel would perform as pick material as they seem not to be very strong. But , making feeler gauge from them might be very expensive as they are expensive too. Tho , my watch took too many dings with no scratches at all , so , combining these two might be winning combo. :)

@@s0men00bb Oh Absolutly, Just that the focus of this was compactness. You can take very thin yet powerfull magnets either as or shaped into tools and sleeve them. Just that the sleeve is then added space. Up to the users obviously where and how they wish to assemble a kit. My response was mainly focussed on my personal situation and my personal feelings on how I go about these things. So just saying I tend to keep my magnets / electronic surge or electronic material in seperate kits (basically 3 different packs), Due to how I find they space and interact. And yeah stainless steel is weak, yet I never end up having just 1 kind of metal material, just like you also mentioned marine grade steel amongst all my tools. especially the makeshift stuff, tends to quickly change in materials, like copper(just conductive of power not exactly magnetic) or Iron etc.

Yeah, I’d go with the 80% estimate. Maybe a z wrench with different widths each side. Find them a lot easier for dimple locks than standard tension tools. Maybe a couple of 15 or 18’s just for those narrow key ways. From what I recall, that southord pen is in 24. Pretty damn good kit though. I might have to come up with my own...

Yeah, it would be a tough fit in a pocket for warmer weather... Could go in a jacket pocket maybe, but I'm thinking of it more like a travel kit than EDC like what he was saying at the end about taking it to a meetup... I keep nearly all my picks in a tool roll, though it's a bit bulkier, but easy to throw in my work bag 🍻🌇

I already carry a pocket flashlight and a Gerber multitool as part of my pocket EDC in my 5.11 tacticool pants. I carry a couple of Sparrows Tuxedo flat cases with a nice complement of picks and tension wrenches, and they fit perfectly in my right pants pocket, in inner pockets with my cell phone in the outer pocket. I'm mostly prepared for pin tumbler, wafer locks and tubular locks with the goat wrench... heavy on bypass and raking. It's kinda sad what passes for security for most of the US. I have a grab-and-go kit if I know I'm going to be doing this sort of thing. It has picks with comfortable handles, a wider assortment of tension tools, a small plug spinner, etc., in a maxed out Soarrows Sherman case. I'm not currently set up for disassembling and re-pinning locks, but I might supplement my grab-and-go kit.

I'm new to lock sport myself, but I often think that there's not enough attention given to lever locks, particularly of the curtained type. Brummie Lock Picker has demonstrated making some excellent lever lock wires and quirky tension tools for very little cost (although the wires may be too long to include in this EDC).
@LockNoob
@LockNoob 3 жыл бұрын
Thing with lever locks is that there are so, so many different types I’d need a whole other roll case to get close to a ‘universal’ set. I suppose a few tensioners and picks wouldn’t hurt though!
@EdocDab
@EdocDab 3 жыл бұрын
Maybe just wires and the wire holder ring I showed from an O ring. That wouldn't take space. Maybe bend the wires on the spot if needed. Tensioners in all sizes might not be needed then.

Wow...we think alike. I have almost everything you put in there (still waiting for a sparrows disk detained tool "thanx Bill and LPL") but I would add a few paperclips and bobby pins just because they are so small and might be useful, and a small vial full of pins and springs. It makes no sense to gut it if you can't alter it. Also consider one or two of those tiny needle files that have no handles. A multitool is a good idea but too bulky for the kit, I would just carry one separately. It's in my nature to always carry some kind of multitool as I am a Mr. Fixit sort of guy. Addendum: Sparrows make some nice small rubber pinning mats. I didn't quite catch the name of the company selling those foil followers. Was it HPC, HVC, ?
