Thank you, this is a very informative video. Recently on of my stands fell over and viciously attacked my Martin (Authentic Series) OM18 doing substantial damage. So the round base idea is what I'm going to be looking to setup in my home studio.

I'm sorry to hear that. I've put a chip in one of my best friends not long ago. I keep on spinning my chair around and knocking the stand in my smallish space. I've gotten better at collapsing the vertical on the stands and tucking them away now. I've also considered adding weight (but not size) to the base...but never got around to that.

Thanks Jason this is really helpful. Too easy to buy the wrong stand. Condenser mics are really heavy so the fastens and weight balance are important too. Would be interested to see how you set up and use the twin mic stand. Cheers. Malster

You're welcome. I think you're referring to the two silver mics on the bar...those are a matched pair of Rode NT5 "pencil" mics. The pair with the bar, is designed for X-Y stereo mic (google it!) configurations that conveniently fit on a single mic stand. Setting an X-Y mic a few feet back is a decent way to record a guitar. Those mics are also often used for drum overheads. X-Y can work well for "large" instruments where there's no one particular spot you want to mic up.

it's a combination of two standard things. It's a round base stand PLUS a small boom arm. You'd probably buy them separately, but they are both easily searchable items.

Hard to know exactly what happened from your description. I don't know that mic stands are really "heavy duty" - I think they are just better quality and less likely to fall apart. I'd say if you can afford a TLM-102 mic, then get a high quality stand and you'll be OK?

@jasonpillingmusic
@jasonpillingmusic 3 жыл бұрын
That second stand is a mix and match of parts: the base and the small arm on top. I was more trying to show what I thought was a good useful configuration. For a simple base and a small arm that could assemble into my Stand 2, or for quality stands in general, I'd recommend Gator Frameworks, seems to be available on Amazon with a lots of models to choose from.

Thanks for the video. i got one question tho, does the second stand, the one with the round base, pick more noise than the first one from ground vibrations? I mean things like footsteps, low frequencies travelling trough the ground, that sort of thing. Or there isn't that much of a noticeable difference?
@jasonpillingmusic
@jasonpillingmusic 3 жыл бұрын
Good question, because there's no doubt stand vibrations / bumping can transfer to the mic. That's partly what shock mounts are supposed to address might be the solution if you're having that trouble? But to answer your question more directly, I have never noticed any difference due to the base design. But I record in a basement...so the floor under my stands never moves.

Thank you Jason.great review. Iv got a Shure smb and I need a stand for it instead of the arm stand. Which stand would you recommend?
@jasonpillingmusic
@jasonpillingmusic 3 жыл бұрын
SM7b? It has a thread built right into it, so it's compatible with pretty much everything (in the US market). But it's a heavy mic...so if you want to boom it out, you might want to look for something that has notches to lock the connection between the boom and stand so it doesn't droop. Also because of the weight, you might need a heavier or wider base.

Not entirely clear what you want to do? But just guessing...if you want the most flexibility with a long reaching boom...you need a folding tri-stand or something with a wide base for stability.

@@jasonpillingmusic I'm using maono AU-100 condenser clip on lavelier microphone. Is it good idea to use stand for that microphone. Because i want to try with pop filter.
@jasonpillingmusic
@jasonpillingmusic 3 жыл бұрын
@@nagalakshmirayadi3556 Microphones get used in a wide variety of creative ways all the time, and there's no wrong answer that gets a good result. So, I'd say try it. But a pop filter is not much different than the foam covers, so you could also try a thicker foam wrapped on the mic. Some mics even come with different thicknesses of foam covers. The rule of thumb for a pop filter is if you can breath through it, it lets enough air through. But again I say, whatever gets you the result you want is the right answer. Good luck!

What mic stand do you think is the best for at2020
@jasonpillingmusic
@jasonpillingmusic 3 жыл бұрын
Hi...generally, any mic fits any stand. It's more about where you want to hold the mic, store the mic/stand when not in use. Except when you're mixing between global regions, and then the standard thread sizes might be different - but that's what the adapters are for. If you let me know how you want to use the mic, I might be able to help more.

Hi Cody. I bought those pieces separately, and I don't know that I've ever seen them as an actual package deal. It's a standard straight stand, and then I bought a small boom to attach on top. For the small boom...these are pretty cool because they can be short or long depending on your needs. Gator is a great brand....tuff stuff. @@jasonpillingmusic i meant I'm not sure if it can handle the wight of tlm102. (My Eng is not good) I'm usually sitting on the ground for playing guitar and singing (very lazy 😁). So i think a short stand will be better for me.
@jasonpillingmusic
@jasonpillingmusic 3 жыл бұрын
@@behzadraeisi7597 It would probably be a good choice for that, and a taller stand may not reach low enough. I use the short stand to reach up to a seated position to record guitars. Worst case, you can add a weight to the base if you have problems with tipping.

what is the best boom and the normal stand for my Rode nt1?
@jasonpillingmusic
@jasonpillingmusic 3 жыл бұрын
So that's a typical large diaphragm mic. It depends how much boom length you really need. Because if you need longer lengths, you're going to want a wide base like the tri-base to avoid it tipping over. I keep my similar mic on a short boom on top of a straight stand with a 9" round base...and it is a bit tippy and I have to be careful.

@Lin Saosin That is adding weight for sure. I haven't used that kind of filter (but hear they are useful in some rooms), but if I had to guess, I think I would use a wider tri-base for that. If you can balance the weight of the reflection booth and the mic above a tri-base, I think you'd be fairly stable.
