The game was designed with players having to share their findings with each other. So yes, this game really does require a guide and the magic of finding secrets together with other players is long gone. I'll admit that the subtle cracks and burnable bushes are a welcoming change for modern times. As well as the Save option access. Even if it was due to hardware limitations, I kinda like the OG minimap (it's more for giving you your general location).

Dark Souls 1 had this philosophy only with the internet in mind. Zelda 1 was designed around the idea that children will talk about it and use each other to find secrets and solve puzzles.

If you all think this is good, take a gander at the Legend of Link mod. It does everything this one does, but adds the slash attack, spin attack, hookshot, roc's feather, pegasus boots, hammer, quake medallion, flippers, and changes the recorder to an ocarina that changes between light and dark world. It does make the game styled more like Link's Awakening however, and the overworld is changed drastically to give it a metroidvania feel.

I wonder if there could be a balance, where these visual indicators could be unlocked by an item like the Lens of Truth, or the Pulse Scanner from Metroid Dread. You could play most of the game without the visual indicators, but finding the optional item closer to the end would let you polish off the secrets you haven’t found.

i just played through zelda 1 with the randomizer and the HdPack MESEN texture pack, and I drew my own map, and it was super fun. the dungeon locations and shop locations, etc were randomized, and where the special items are was randomized. this gives a very authentic original zelda 1 feel where you have to just explore the world and dungeons to find what you need and learn its layout.

It was designed as it was on purpose. When Nintendo originally released the game, the released the guide that you could purchase separately. The other option at the time was to purchase the Nintendo Power magazine issue that contained a mini guide for Zelda as well. But, if you were hardcore enough, yeah, you'd bomb every wall if that's what it took.
@cnnhdlvth9557
@cnnhdlvth9557 4 ай бұрын
I agree. I think this mod looks hideous and that almost every idea mentioned in the video is a bad one except making Save easier. Bomb spamming the walls is not so bad, and people who think it sounds futile just haven't tried it. You grow an intuitive sense of where they like to put things. Starting with: dungeons only have doors in the dead center of the wall, so, that's the only place to bomb. I still think Zelda mods can be fun, and graphical improvements can be improvements when they don't look like this crap here. And the original creators did make some bad design decisions, but this video seems to think the bad decisions were simply the ones that made the game hard. What would I change? Well the story is nonsense and most of the game text is unhelpful bad translations. Some cool-looking items don't have much purpose. The levels are not in an order matching their toughness, and the difficulty of finding them is also not in the best order. And to be honest, some areas of the game are just not fun.

But there are a lot more games in the world today, most people don't want to spend the time to get that full OG experience, they just want to feel the world and gameplay, not the endless hours of guessing and researching. Many new modern players will opt for the original experience, but I think it's fine to have a more accessible version if it means keeping this game relevant as more than just a line of text on a list of games that used to be the best.

Also added different enemies (some new ones), new items, a dark overworld (Lorule), a new soundtrack made by a friend, a magic meter as seen in Zelda 2, and much more. I actually like that you can’t see bomb-able walls in the original. I always have a very physical reaction to finding bomb spots after having to bomb so many random walls. It feels similar to shiny hunting in Pokémon games like you’re placing bomb after bomb to no avail and then you finally you find one. Never fails to make me gasp or say omg! There’s no satisfaction to me in them just being clearly marked

When the game was localized they knew the "easy way" to kill Pol's Voice was no longer possible so they made them weak to arrows (also making the bow more useful too). Not only do they die in one hit to an arrow, but it pierces them so it can hit multiple. I'm not sure why they didn't just make them die to the recorder, but I always found the arrow kill method more satisfying, especially when you can get an arrow to plow through like 5 at once. I remember being really confused as a kid when the recorder did nothing since the manual still says it hates loud noises. I think the EU version of the game made the recorder kill them, but it's possible I am mixing it up with a ROM hack.

In the game and watch if you press select it simulates blowing into the mic. Also in all versions the easiest way to max your rupees is to bomb on the screen to the left of the spawning point. There’s a money making game there. Just save it every time you go positive. Same can be done to explore with bombs. Just bomb away and when you run out either reset or do the save and select retry. Oh and the save screen on the game and watch is just start+select+a+b

In the US version, specifically because the NES didn’t have the microphone, they made the Pols Voice ultra vulnerable to the arrows - you could kill a whole row with one arrow, if you timed it right. I highly agree with all the improvements made. It makes me mad that Nintendo doesn't do these kind of improvements But I highly disagree that you need a guide to play the original. I played it on the late 80's early 90's. I didn't have a guide or even a computer. I was a straight A student with plenty of time on my hands after school. I played this game a lot and found all the secrets. No guide needed! I think Zelda 3 really spoiled people when it comes to finding secrets. And as other commentators have mentioned, the arrows can kill the pols voice with ease in the non-Japanese versions. You don't need to use the sword on them.

For a different opinion on the subject, while I think Zelda 1 is a fun game and was important for the industry and all, at the same time... it didn't age well. I think it's fair to say that a lot of aspects of it are unacceptable by today's gaming standards. Aspects of which, imo the hack fixes. Let's us start with one of the most common critcisms of the game: the lack of visual cues, let's be honest, the average player nowadays isn't gonna have a nice time destroying every corner of the map, especially with items like the candle that work only once every time you go to a room, and that if we consider that they may not even know some of the trees are burnable or that there are exploding walls. A thing that the defenders of these mechanics often state is that the crypticness make the game more mysterious and added to the exploration aspect of it. Now folks, there's difference between secret and cryptic! One has clues provided by the game to make the player use his brain to reach its conclusion, and the other is completely arbitrary, confusing and won't be solved by your average player unless they get lucky or use a guide. Other arguments comment on the fact that the game was supposed to be won with the help of your friends, but let's face it, this is not applicable nowadys, especially when you can just use a guide to win it, and good luck trying to find someone that plays Zelda 1 like that. It's an essential and universal fact that most gamers won't like an ENTIRE game where you need outside sources to know what to do and where to go unless it's something like an ARG. Like AVGN once said: _"When I play a game, all I want is the NES, the TV, and the controller. Also, preferably a couch to sit on. But what I don't want, is a pen and paper to write down fuckin' clues!"_ . And besides, the fact that there's a map is far from being a detriment to the exploration aspect of the game, the hack never has a sign telling to the player where to go, making so that the players explores the world either way, only with the bonus of not getting lost and knowing what places to go. All of that said, I tolerate Zelda 1 because as I mentioned before, it was influential to gaming and the base gameplay is at least fun. Besides, back then, there wasn't a guideline of how to do good games. Which is why a lot of games of the era didn't age well, so it gets a pass. Ultimately, while Zelda 1 is not all bad, you're not gonna convince me that Zelda 1 flaws are a good thing. -By a diehard Zelda fan, especially the first one
@SonicTheDarkHedgehog
@SonicTheDarkHedgehog 2 жыл бұрын
First off, what you said was a opinion so you stating it’s a fact shows how ignorant you are. Secondly, there is a difference between cryptic and repetitive/annoying(which I find neither in this game)when it came to finding walls to bomb or bushes to burn back in the 80s, all that was just a chance we all took at the time and sometimes taking chances can be fun in itself. Also adding to the fact that a lot of these secrets were optional and not mandatory helps in itself. Third off, I personally think this game has aged as fine as wine because a whole lot of our games nowadays owe themselves to this masterpiece. Yes, this mod is interesting and you can kiss this KZfaqrs butt all you want over it but nothing will ever beat that nostalgic feeling you get when you play the original game everybody played at the time.

I don't see this ROM hack as a better version. I see this mainly as an easier version of the game. The only good thing about this game is the Up+A for 1 controller to save. When you find out that you can burn bushes and bomb walls it's so easy to see the pattern for exactly where to bomb and burn. You don't need the cracks and other hints. Bomb walls: In dungeons - it's always centred! So there's never any other position. You got up to 4 possibilities in each room in a dungeon. Overworld - always north! And never on "diagonals". That brings down the possibilities a lot! Never more than 1 cave per screen. Burn bushes: when you find the secrets you will notice kind of a pattern for which bushes that's the most likely. It's such a rewarding feeling to FIND a cave/secret. You will never get that feeling with the hints. It's so great that the rupees are used for arrows! It's not logic at all but it's a great feature! And I like the original "position only" overworld map. Anyways I like this ROM hack because it brings an "easy mode" to the game. I don't need it but other gamers gonns love it.

The redux is good, but doesn't address all the issues. The illusionary walls and flute secrets in the Second Quest still have no indication and newbies will still need a guide. :( On the plus side, you actually swing your sword now instead of poking with it. I think it ups your range a bit. :3

Personally I think secret walls don't really need an indicator. Once you know they exist, you just give every wall a quick push. I can kind of see the flute secrets, but if you have played the first quest to completion, a smart player would try the flute everywhere.

@@jessefinnegan1719 the problem is knowing the fake walls exist in the first place. They don't react to bombs, there are no in-game hints that point the concept out, and there is no intuitive indication that the player should even be looking for that sort of thing. Plus, some of those fake walls are one-way, which compounds things even further and can even punish the player for checking every wall. X(

@unknown000001000 True. Hmm depending on how in the spirit of the game you want to be, I would say that either a NPC hinting directly at the existence of hidden walls, or redesigning the first one by basically making you only having the option of pushing against the wall. Having a item like the flute reveal them might work too. Bombs are already super useful, so I wouldn't go with them if I could help it.

Not a great video. - Once you buy the blue ring, shield, and bait, you really only need rupees for potions. So using them for ammo isn't a big deal. - The rupee max is already 255 in the original game. - Pols voice go down with a single arrow. And a single arrow can kill multiple because it doesn't stop until it crosses the screen. So even in the original, arrows are OP. - It's not that hard to find bombable walls and caves and burnable trees. Back in the day, we just shared our progress with our friends. Also, it's only important to bomb walls in the final dungeon. And if you think the game is impossible to beat, LobosJr played it for the first time a year ago without a guide and he beat it just fine.

Sorry for the late reply but, I understand that using them for ammo is not a big deal once you have bought the ring, shield and bait, but it is still annoying using rupees as an ammo. Using arrows which are naturally dropped just seems like a better gameplay mechanic to me. Having a higher rupee max is a QoL feature. Being capped by a number as low as 255 (even though I understand that the most expensive item is 250) is quite irritating, esp when you won't be able to pick up a lot of rupees because you are already at the limit. This just makes it a little bit better. Sure for you guys it may have not been "hard", but I feel like the game would be a better run through if the caves were shown. I don't think you can argue that either, unless you are worried about the "exploration" aspect, which I think is stupid as if the caves were indicated, it would only intice you to look more and more on the map, which I said in the video. Seeing a cave every once in a while would be a motivating sight to see in a game as confusing as this one. Kudos to that guy, but just because he beat it does not mean it excuses some of the faults of this game.

@@abhayreacts2717 I think you're nitpicking. We who were present when this was the only Zelda game had no trouble finding all the secrets. We didn't have any handholding and we got by just fine. You're only complaining about the rupee/arrow mechanic because it just feels neater to you to use arrows. If anything, the frequency of rupee drops means you're seldom short on ammo. And few of us leaned on the bow that much, anyway. The game came out in 1987. All things considered, it's bang on perfect.

@@abhayreacts2717 A little. A lot of it is word of mouth. I can only guess someone used a bomb in a dungeon and learned by accident that some walls are secret passageways. Miyamoto is on record saying that the secrets in LOZ were intended to get players talking with each other and sharing knowledge. Being someone who played this game not too long after it was released, didn't really look at not knowing these secrets as inconveniences. Instead, they were literally secrets. And yes, over time I learned more of them from experimentation or knowledge exchange from other players. Im not saying LOZ was a perfect game that shouldn't be improved. I'm merely pointing out that you are incapable of experiencing this game in the same perspective and wonderment as us oldies did.

Secrets that advertise themselves aren't really secrets; I remember complaining about how in later Zelda games the bombable wall areas had cracks. We really don't need "BOMB HERE" signs yelling out from the walls. And the first Zelda game came with a manual that more or less taught us how to draw our maps on paper, although we quickly learned our way around Hyrule so no maps were needed. Show me any overworld screen and I could probably tell you how to get there from the starting screen from memory. Games these days very nearly play themselves (well, a lot of mobile games do EXACTLY that).

It's called a Patch, or Hack. Not a mod. And no... Zelda 1 does not remotely require a guide to play/beat. At the worst, there are a couple translation errors. And a couple things that arent immediately intuitive to figure out without spending a couple minutes trying things. You make this game sound like the infamous kneeling at the wall in Simons Quest or something. You dont need to oversell a easy mode/improvement hack with such statements.

@abhayreacts2717 2 жыл бұрын
I can understand what you mean, but with these modifications it does not tell you where to go or what to do. Like I said in the video, you will naturally explore and find caves that you can blow up. That is not the game telling you where to go, but just you noticing things along your adventure. If you believe it ruins the fun of the game, you do that, but I would say that the majority of people would find it better to explore the world and see caves, then having to blow up the entirety of Hyrule. That is an exaggeration but you can understand.
