I bought my 4790K and ASUS Hero 7 Z97 with 16gb GSkill Trident X back in 2014 and its still kicking strong today in September 2023. The only things that are newer are an M.2 NVMe SSD and EVGA 2080 Super. So far, only one of my fans have failed in these 10 years. The next replacement is the case since it has been getting beat up, but have not felt any need to upgrade the base components yet.

Man I have the same setup, it’s 8 years old and recently the z97 broke. I’m trying to fix it but I think it needs a replacement. Some BIOS update error won’t even start the pc. 😢

I got a second hand MSI Hero 7 and best thing for me is the onboard-sound, does support surround sound and up to 600 Ohms head-set and the software comes handy to tune audio on the fly...The second best thing is to have good support of up to DDR3-3200Mhz (OC) and good over OC capability for a 4790K...Buying second hand memory was extremely cheap and despite been PCI-E Gen 2.0 you can still hook a M.2 3.0/4.0....Limitations are the lack of 6x physical cores for modern games that need it but a Ryzen 2600x back then would had cost me 4x time more, was best buy ever and no regrets at all :) Only issues is that you do need to find good memory modules with nice speed and give a nice OC to enjoy modern games without issues. If I had money to upgrade I would wait and jump into the newest DDR-5 Ryzen platform once their prices settle, but it won't happen...Probably gonna stick with it for a couple of years more.

You overlooked Asus' Z87-WS and Z97-WS motherboards. Linus called the Z87-WS the best of the bunch, with 32 PCIe lanes, 10 Sata ports, two Lan ports, two 8 pin CPU power inputs, BIOS flashback (no CPU required) and solid memory OC. I had my 4790K paired with the Z87-WS and I absolutely loved all of the features that board had to offer.

i have tried 2 different 4790k on my Z97-WS with bios updated and stock clocks and get frequent random bsod, with my 4770k it is flawless. the 4790k works real nice on my sabertooth board an d my Z97-a board, i guess i have bad luck??

@@The_Snowman666 Seems so. I had two different 4790K CPUs. My 1st setup just shut down (at the 1 year mark). I ended up doing an RMA on the board, PSU and CPU. The replacement setup lasted another 5 years, before I'd sold it to a friend. I haven't heard any complaints from him about it. I was able to run both CPUs @4.7Ghz and it was paired with 16GB of DDR3-2133Mhz RAM.

Rocking my i7 4790K on an Asus H87-Pro (that I got with an i5 4570 back in the day) at 4.8 GHz and 1.31V. The only problem is no possibility for RAM overclocking, which is a bummer, but it can handle the OC for the CPU itself just fine. Will try to push it to 4.9 once I delid it.

I have two overclocked Haswell systems still kicking - one is a 4690k with an Asrock Z97 Pro 4 (full ATX) with crossfire R9 280Xs - the motherboard has been absolutely rock solid and matched the blue and black theme I was going for back in 2014. It still has the same video cards even though crossfire is irrelevant now because they match so well, haha. I got it the board for about $50 open box at Microcenter - I was really excited for that find at the time! The computer I'm writing this from has a 4770k with a Gigabyte GA-Z97MX Gaming 5 (matx) with a 5700xt. This thing is still performing amazingly especially considering what it is. This mobo was also a Microcenter find back in 2015 and sat around until I accumulated enough spare parts to assemble it a few years back. I don't like the UEFI as much as the Asrock, and it was never stable with this 4770k at stock settings, but it's rock solid overclocked, even without raising the voltage. It's weird, but it works and performs well now. At this point, the best board for a Haswell chip is the one that you have. They can be amazing performers for what they are, but I've seen some people spend nearly new platform money for a 4770k/4790k system, which is silly - if you keep an eye out and ask around, you can find these parts very cheap if not free at this point. Buying 4th gen parts on Amazon nowadays is borderline certifiable - you can buy a combo at Microcenter with an i7-14700k, MSI Z790 board, and 32gb DDR5 for less.

I am using a ASUS z97 maximus 7 formula. I think it's without a doubt the best looking home for the 4790k. I did build this rig less than 6 months ago and wanted a rig built around this beast of a cpu. 32 gb of 1600mhz gskill ripjaws, a Samsung EVO 1tb SSD, a 500 GB Samsung NVMe SSD and a EVGA 1070ti 8gb Both my CPU and GPU are water-cooled all in a ROSEWILL Prism S500 atx mid tower. . Acer 165hz 1080p curved 24" monitor. I am gonna ride this baby till the wheels fall off and the way it's looking it's gonna be a long ride. Looking to upgrade my GPU to A Titan Xp 12 gb here in a few weeks. Check out the Asus maximus 7 formula. A little pricy but so good looking. Fully armored.

Not all B85 chipsets are lacking in overclocking. I put a 4790K in a "Gigabyte G1.sniper B6 Gaming" with a B85 chipset, in BIOS you can set both RAM and CPU frequency and voltages. I use to run it at 4.7GHz all cores at 1.35v, now it's my 2nd computer which the kids use and I dropped it down to 4.6GHz at 1.3v as it runs much cooler but it's still a great gaming PC.

With systems this old, it's a little hard to judge which boards are budget boards, since you pay a premium, just for their availability. You get what you can get. However, the board I have for my 4790k was a very good price, when I purchased. It doesn't have many frills, but it has just what I need/needed at the time. It's an MSI Z97-PC Mate. Before that, I also had an H87-PC Mate. Both did the job well. I even noticed that my systems ran faster with those boards, than whatever board came with my original prebuilt system.

im using an asus z97-p(a variant of the A budget) and hell yea. its amazing for budget and great overclocking support. totally worth for my i7 5775c 4.2ghz with 2.2 ratio edram and 2.4mhz hyperx oc ram. (the processor is really outside of its era for gaming.) i also custom modded its bios to enable resizable bar. its still definitely very relevant in this time especially if 1080p is your gaming resolution target. I can even play cyberpunk at 70fps with max setting and rtx enabled at ultra , dlss set at ultra😆. Its amazing how the processor of these era can do, If 1080p is your target. honestly if aesthetic is what it needs, all u need is a custom casing and custom lighting. we have so many of these, these days.

The Asrock Z97M Pro4 is a very strange choice on this list, you factor in price of a board from many years ago which i think is silly. All of the boards from this era are cheap now. If you want a Asrock board on the list then it should have been the Z97 Extreme 6. That has at least modern M2 slots for storage, one of them is 4 lanes pcie 3. And it will give max performance for a Samsung 970 EVO that came out many years later then the board. Please focus on best quality/features instead of price for some this old.

SATA-Express isn't even worth mentioning as a feature, there was only 1 product released for it that I know of, and it was a crappy add-on (added a couple USB ports at the cost of multiple SATA ports and required a whole drive bay-). Still running a 4790k with an z97 MSI-Krait edition- love this board! It was affordable and still looks beautiful. Got my CPU at 4.8 on this board. Nice video :D

Wow! This video game in super handy here in November of 2022. I have a 4790k and I have a 4820 k, I'm not for sure which one I should go with. But I'm just a dude trying to make a living and I can't afford to be blowing thousands of dollars on a system. I'm going to be pairing it with an Nvidia Quadro 5000 graphics card, which still kicks ass and its own right, nd 32 gigs of Corsair vengeance LP 1866 MHz ram, a Corsair cx650m power supply, 1 and trying to put me a little something together and I was wondering which motherboard to get I cannot believe I found this video thank you so much man God bless you and have a great day.

do not take the MSI Z97 Gaming 5 if you want to try Windows 11 because it can't run TPM 2.0 while asus motherboard can. i had a 4770k delided with liquid metal with MSI Z97 Gaming 5.

I was just wondering about this, unfortunately I do have Gigabyte Gaming 5. "Unfortunate" because of no Tpm 2.0 but I did manage to get to a 4.7ghz all core OC. I might be able to push it more if I was using liquid cooling. I might see if I can find the Msi board that you wrote about. Thanks for the info!

Yes there is. 2400mhz ddr3 with xmp would get you to 3000mhz or at least close to it. This ram is not cheap and kinda hard to come by.

thanks for your question. This cpu is a bit old right now but if you have an old pc and motherboard that you don't want to change it would work fine. In most stores is probably more expensive than $75 simple because there are not many so if you find it in that price it would be ok

I have the i7-4790k and z97 gaming 5 The system freezes when igpu driver is installed (windows update/MSI website/intel DSA Tool) system works fine with Microsoft basic display adapter But won’t pass audio via HDMI Won’t let me change resolution to 1440p or 4k No option for custom aspect ratio to adjust the top,bottom,left and right if the screen Any idea how to fix it?

Any point upgrading from H97 to z97 mobo regarding ram, H97 supports only 1600mhz. CPU is i7 4790k.

You mentioned the H87 and Q87, but no Z87. I have an Asus Z87-Pro with an overclocked i7-4770K and two GTX 660 Ti's SLI'd together. It even came with the SLI connector included. I'm running the latest BIOS which also supports the i7-4790K.

I have Asrock H97 not bad Mobo but The BIOS is Sucks no protection at all. Need Jtag if bricked. Pcie gen 3 x16 + gen 2 x16 but x4 mode only. Wtf Crossfire support? Useless. only happeniess the new bios updates contains NVME support

The answer is: None! Not when even a fucking I3 12100 can outperform the trusty I7 4790 in any scenario which costs the same used as the I3 costs new hooked up to a cheap H610 mobo. Its just obsolete.

The guy never said anything about about a i3 12100. This video is about the 4790k and compatable motherboards. Alot of cpu's outperform this cpu. As far as single core operation the 4790k smashes the fuck out of the 12th gen i3 and still tops it in multicore operation. My pick is the legend, 4790k and how long has it been going strong? 10 years.

I'm confused. You shit all over the æsthetics of the ASUS Z97-A ATX (rightfully so, IMO), but then you give it an æsthetic rating of 9/10. This feels like stat-padding to get it slotted into a position you thought it deserved, rather than giving it the position it actually deserved based on your metrics. 5/10 æsthetics, at best.

Anyone here able to update bios on a Asus h81m-c to work with i7-4790k? I got an older computer someone updated to windows 10. I purchased the i7 chip and many sources say it works and other people said they can't get it to work. Asus had it listed as a comparable board in 2014 and removed it months later

Don't know about asus, but I do have a gigabyte H81 chipset mobo running the I7 4790k. I upgraded the cpu quite some time ago, I don't remember if I updated the bios or not. However, on the website, it does say it's compatible with the 4790k.

Update your h81m bios to the latest version they have, it should fix that question. i have h81m e33 on pair with i7 4790k, my latest bios update provide haswell refresh and devil canyon processor support
