I've had a black Helite for a couple of years. Used twice in anger. Once a huge highside on a sportsbike at 70+mph, thrown up 7ft in the air and landed on my back and then rolled numerous times. Walked away with just a fractured ankle. It totally cocoons your torso, protects your collarbone, stabilises your neck with your helmet, protects your coccyx too. A&E doctor swore it saved me from "severe trauma". Second time was a lowside on a heavy adventure bike. Didn't deploy initially until I was on the ground and I had slid away from bike, then it did. Big protection point here is once I'd stopped sliding, the bike didn't and carried on into me. Vest protected me from 300+kg smacking into my ribs! It will also give you some protection from impacts with street furniture and the like. Yes they are expensive, but for me a total no brainer and wouldn't ride anything without one. I even take a spare tether and use it when I get a courtesy bike from the garage during servicing etc. They are no hassle and become second nature to click in as much as fastening your helmet would be. The thing is you don't really appreciate them until you need them!

Thanks TMF...meant to say another great review. When I rang my wife and told her I’d had an accident she was in a bit of a state so I wear the thing as much for her as me now. We both have one when touring. I get the piss taken by some on my biker buds but frankly don’t give a rats arse. Would prefer to ride without but the evidence of the protection it gave me is just too compelling.

Absolutely. Honestly $600 is a hell of a lot cheaper than an ER visit/potential permanent damage. I got into one accident and really wish I had one. Would’ve saved lots of pain I feel like.

Had my helite for 7 years now....unfortunately I did test it out fully, when I high-sided my BMW 1200 gs 😩 I got up and walked away, with no bruises or damage to my torso 👍 would not ride without it, superb bit of kit. All the best 👍🎄

I've been wearing a Helite vest for about 5 years. Lightweight, comfortable, and cheaper than cracked ribs or time off work. And I have had the opportunity to use it in a 15mph crash on dirt. I got thrown off my GS, landed on my backside in a cloud of dust and it literally felt like I was jumping into bed backwards. The next few days the only thing sore on my body was my upper leg and rear end.

Hi Gregg So the vest will deploy in a low speed crash as well? I notice an electronic version will be available here in Canada in June-it costs a good $600 more than the tethered version...It appears both function identically.

I love my helite vest I was actually side swiped and thrown off my bike, I walked away with just a few bumps . it saved my back and neck because of how I landed .

Hey John Have you been out and about in your vest? How is it to live with? I commute almost daily with my bike, and I am wondering how would this vest be to manage and be incorporated into my riding "checklist" - can one simply unclip it and take it off with your jacket (so that the vest stays on the jacket permanently)? The theory makes a lot of sense to me, but I am afraid of spending that much if the vest will be prohibitively difficult to live with day-to-day.

Bought the Helite five years ago, a friend of mine had a low speed collision riding in town, the accident caused spinal damage resulting in severe paralysis from the neck down. Knowing what happened I tried the Helite at the Scottish bike show and after a long chat with the dealer bought it there and then, my friends life and that of his family was changed in an instant, a few years after his accident and paralysis he passed away. I love riding my bike and do so wearing the vest every time, I too have a wife and kids and although it’s accepted motorcycling has its risks if they can be mitigated further then I’m all for that.

@@roythompson6137 I bought the e-version last spring and according to helite it activates on situations that are over 20 kph-somewhere around that speed,I definitely didn't want the cable version as it's unlikely it would deploy if you hit some gravel on a turn and got tossed from the bike-it takes a collision to activate that cable version according to my research. Safe Riding!

@@RobertNixAlternativeArtist The vest will inflate once you reach the end of the tether regardless of the speed you are going. Your body weight is enough force to pull the tether. If you are going so slow that you don’t come off the bike, you probably won’t need the protection anyway. If you fasten the tether to be short, the deployment will be faster (we are talking milliseconds). Will it protect in all circumstances? No, but neither will other airbags. As noted, the electronic versions need a minimum of speed to activate. The bottom line is that it reduces the risk of fatal or incapacitating injuries a lot, but not completely. It is all about the risk you are willing to accept.

They're absolutely worth it. People are critical of the cost, but when you consider how much all the other gear costs, not to mention how quickly we will spend just as much on mods like an exhaust, it's a no-brainer. What's $700 for the chance to save your life or possibly avoid a more serious injury?

I have a Helite and had one activated during a demo, which impressed me enough to buy one. I was concerned about it being too hot, especially when I was off the bike, walking around. I was pleased to find that it easily rolls up enough to store in a pannier or topbox, making my jacket cooler and lighter than usual, as it doesn’t need to have the back protector inserted. I agree with other comments that one’s back has got to be worth the price of one of these, just as my head deserves a good helmet. All the Gear, All the Time!

I bought a Dainese D-Air under / over jacket a year ago, the first into On yer Bike in Alyesbury. Similar styling to the Helite (ie it’s a waistcoat type design) but operates like your Dainese jacket with sensors. It can be wore under (or over, although I have always wore it under ) any other jacket(s), doesn’t need servicing each year (as far as I am aware) and only needs an occasional charge. Works very well for me, simple easy and effective.

The most notable thing for me as a doctor, however, is how some motorcyclists think. You buy an aitbag vest and a good, expensive helmet maybe from Shoei that is designed to be as round as possible and with as few protruding parts as possible for not to get stuck when sliding on the ground after an accident. With the weight the helmet has at this moment strains the neck with at least 5-6 g and a twist due to that the helmet get stuck or just change direction from a contact with something can crack a neck. So what do some drivers do ? (no names mentioned 🙃) Well they glue cameras or other devices on the side or top of the helmet and thinks those part will by some magic loosen or fall off before they do harm.... I can tell u that when this happens they have already made the dammage to your neck. Not to forget that you add extra weight which with the g forces can become quite heavy even if at standstill they only weigh 500 grams...All this completely counteracts both the airbag's design to stabilize the helmet's movements and the helmet manufacturer's safety design

Well said! Its a fact a force of just 7 or 8 kg can snap a neck if applied at a specific angle ! Cameras on helmets are bad ideas.

For particularly longer trips, I wear a Leatt neck brace. I believe Leatt is a South African doctor who developed his brace after seeing a friend suffer the exact injury you describe. Originally designed for off-road / flat track / moto cross riders a road version has been available for a number of years. Like other safety devices I get a sense of security when I wear it but I'd be interested in your opinion on the merits of this type of protection.

I’ve been riding all across Europe with my Helite vest and can’t recommend it enough. It’s comfy-even in summer over a mesh jacket-it’s zero hassle hassle to tether and more importantly, it’s easy to replace the gas canister on the road (without having to send it in for “service”).

Good comparison video 👍. I’ve been wearing the Helite Turtle vest for a year now and it’s no real hassle. I dropped my bike at a standstill (foot slipped on gravel) and it deployed before I hit the ground which was very impressive and reassured to me that the system works ok. I too have forgotten to untether the vest when getting off the bike but it’s never gone off, it takes a fairly strong tug to deploy it. I like wearing hi vis when riding but for those who don’t you can get the Helite in black too. Good work TMF 👍

From someone who has crashed using an airbag...I had the Dainese D-Air and had a low side in 2020, in a curve, at about 65mph (104 km/h) and landed HARD on my back. The D-Air deployed and Iam confident it saved me from injury. The D-Air must be returned to Dainese and recharged at a cost of about US$300 (244 Euros). Dainese has HORRIBLE customer service as I was never able to get them to recharge the unit. 😏 I gave-up and bought a Kleim inflatable vest, it is owner rechargeable at a cost of about US$80 for the cartridge. I keep a spare cartridge on hand. There are little things about the Kleim I do not like, more difficult to recharge, you can only check the battery and unit-on status before putting the vest on, the D-Air provides its activation status when you are wearing the vest. From a cost perspective, the D-Air is US$700, the Kleim initially is about half that cost but then they charge an annual fee of US$120 to keep the unit activated. So from a 3-year cost perspective, they end up costing similiar amounts.

The Klim system (actually based on in&motion) has a couple of advantages: 1. 3x inflation before 1st service is needed 2. The electronics will be swapped whenever a new version is released and this service is included if you opt for the monthly fee vs. buying it. 3. Should you encounter technical issues, the unit will be replaced at no additional cost. So, all in all, the price for the lease is justified imho.

Regarding the monthly fee vs buying the Klim, my options in the U.S were: you MUST buy the vest at about 1/2 the cost of the D-Air, BUT even though you own the vest, you do not own the control module. you still had to pay an annual fee of US$120 to keep the control module working but you could pay the fee annually or monthly. Paying it monthly requires you to connect the unit to the Internet, each month, and pay the fee. I opted to pay annually to avoid the hassle. And if the thought you could only activate the unit for the months you ride, they nix that plan by requiring you to return the control module to them when it is not under lease. The Klim bean counters integrated a bunch of hassles unless, you pay the annual fee. If the D-Air would have allowed me to install a new cartridge myself, I would have stayed with the D-Air.

@@Graimthu1 In Europe you can suspend the monthly subscription any time via the app (i.e. off-season). Or you can buy the control unit for a fee. Another advantage vs. the D-Air is the physical backprotector in case the unit doesn't work for whatever reason. It would be even better if they offered a second sensor fixed to the bike like Helite does, because then it would also work in low-speed situation or when you stand still and get hit/ backended.

Have been considering airbags for 2 years so really appreciate this vid TMF. I use d30 armour in all my gear but the added neck protection a vest provides is super appealing. If I forget to charge the electric vest its not going to do its job, so currently veering towards a tether system, plus cheaper running/service costs

Ive had my helite for 3 years now and never ride without it. I had one demoed on me at motorcycle live and I was very impressed. I've never actually needed to rely on its protection on the road but I like having it as do those at home. Yes they are £500 but time off injured world cost me way more than that so if it helps a little then it's money well spent. The tether doesn't take much getting used to and is now second nature, just like putting a seat belt on in a car.

I have been using the hit air model for the last two years I went for that one because it’s the lightest smallest version but offers significant air bag coverage when it deploys.

Excellent review! Two points: (1) The Goldwing airbag actually does seem workable when you consider that, in a front end collision, your body is still traveling at the pre-collision velocity when it (you) collides with the airbag, very similar to a steering wheel or dash mounted airbag. (2) The Dainese systems are specifically divided into track-focused and street-focused systems, to the extent that Dainese cautions riders NOT to use the street version on track. The reason is that the systems utilize very discrete algorithms and would not work correctly in the wrong scenario. As you noted, prices have dropped and I personally feel the D-Air system is among the most sophisticated.

Great review! I use the Helite turtle 2 as well.That's the only one which support your neck plus it's simple and it can deploy 6 times before you have to send it back to Helite and a new co2 canister very cheap.It means if it's deploy,you don't have to ride long weeks without your airbag.

I have the Helite e-turtle. Love it. Confortable, adapts to summer or winter kit, and no cables to hook onto the bike so simple to swap bikes. I have the optional fork sensor too, for when you are stationary and someone hits you... Brilliant!

Hello Roy, Im considering to buy a Helite vest but am not sure wether I should take a electronic or a mechanicel one. So my question is: I ride several Motorcycles a year and obviously cannot get a fork sensor for every bike…. Does the vest only works with a sensor connected or does it also work if Im on another bike without a fork sensor? And my second question is: How often do you have to recharge the vest and is it easy? Would be Happy if you read this. Greeting Ludwig

@@ludwighoernlein3919 the vest works with or without the fork sensor so no problem there. I use my vest every single day and charge it every 3 weeks or so using the supplied usb cable, very easy. I often leave it charging in a sidecase with a power pack battery.

I’m looking at the Helite for both mechanical and electronic versions, some notes/questions about the electronic version: - you obviously have to deal with recharging the batteries. If you don’t ride for a longer amount of time like in winter, you’ll of course have to recharge it so it doesn’t go empty and be damaged like a motorcycle battery. However, even if you do that properly the the capacity will still degrade over the years. Can the battery be replaced by yourself or dealer/helite? - The manual mentions they don’t guarantee it can deploy when the GPS signal is bad or not available. So when you’re in a tunnel or maybe a on a twisty road between mountains or in a cliff, it maybe won’t work. The manual does not mention if the optional fork sensor mitigates this or if it also needs a GPS signal. Do you know that? - The battery for the fork sensor is not replaceable. They say it lasts about 5 years, so keep in mind you’ll have to buy a new one after 5 years. - One of the mentioned upsides of Helite is that you can replace the cardridge yourself cheap. The normal ones are now $35, though for the electronic vest you need the electronic cardridges, which are $85. Still a lot cheaper though than sending back your vest to the manufacturer like some competitors require.

@@roythompson6137 I did, here are the answers: -fork sensor does not require GPS signal, so in that case you’re still protected. However, the fork sensor works by detecting shock, so theoretically if you would have a lowside/highside without real shock / slip, then the fork sensor might not detect it, and if you would have no GPS signal at the same time then it might not deploy. - The e-turtle battery is not user replaceable but could be replaced by Helite. (No price quote).

After breaking 5 ribs and puncturing a lung In 2015 I started using a black helite vest with my leather jacket and I also bought their touring jacket with the bag built in. Both bits of kit are great and would recommend them to anybody who is considering one, the jacket is heavy but once you have it on you don’t notice it. The vest is very comfortable especially if you remove your jackets built in back protector, the tether is not an issue but just remember to connect it. I now feel a lot more protected and just wish I had been wearing one when I had my crash.

Had a Helite turtle back for 5 years, ideal for my 50 miles a day commute. Never had cause to see if it works, worth having it checked every 12 months, or at least change the cylinder. Don’t like it in the summer heat, blocks vents etc, but ideal for 80% of uk days!

That helite vest reminds me of my cabin crew days , it’s not dissimilar in operation to a life jacket which also uses a gas canister to inflate via the toggle.

Thanks for this review. Great review as always. Currently I use the Helite vest as you have shown, I think mine is just a little older version. Currently I am using several brands as jacket: Revitt and BMW. My next jacket will certainly be Klim Badland. This jacket also features the provision for the Klim aribag which you wear under the jacket. Because of the price, I will wait to buy it until my current jackets are worn out.

Nicely done TMF, and the benefits are clear to see. There was a piece in the news last year (it's on You Tube too) where a guy on a sports bike was wiped out by a Subaru cornering on the wrong side of the road. The rider was seen on a following drivers dash cam cartwheeling through the air. Fortunately the rider had an airbag suit and sustained minor injuries. The driver was less fortunate and I believe is having his second Christmas at her majesty's pleasure. GS is sounding great, I love that sound on start up. Thanks as always.

I've got the Helite vest that looks like a traditional cut-off, I wear it over a normal jacket on longer journeys. Not only is it unnoticeable in every day use it provides useful pocket space and another layer of insulation. It's simple to swap the tether.

I’ve been riding for the last 6 months wearing a Ixon IX‑Airbag U03 under jacket air vest (after I went to buy just a back protector) - I don’t even notice I’ve got it on - love it!

Had my Helite vest 6 years now...havnt come off yet so can’t comment on how it would work. But the reassurance is always there, not just for me, but for the family when they see you ride off. The vests do need a service , which , I admit I havnt done with mine. It requires the vest being sent back to Yorkshire for their technical people to check it out.

I also have had one for about 6yrs and view it as my seat belt for the bike. No issues with tethering it and comfortable as well. I'd feel naked riding without it like I would driving without a seat belt.

I thought the manual says send it back for testing if you deploy it about 3 times or something. I don't think you have to if it hasn't been deployed, you just need to weigh the gas canister to make sure there's still pressure.

I remember speaking to the guys on their stand at the NEC bike show, or maybe the EXCEL...they advised to return the jacket every few years for an inspection . Stitching integrity, gas canister leakage, straps and plastic buckles, deployment system...I suppose they want to look for evidence of wear, so that future products evolve successfully. Although I stated I havnt had my vest serviced, it’s pure laziness on my part, and maybe this winter I ought to get it serviced after 6 years of use.

Hey good vid. Thx. I came to grief on my GS a few months ago and managed to partially crush a few of vertebrae. Brought a tech air 5 and it feels comfortable, just hope it works next time I come hit the road. The advice from the from the medicos was that if there is good safety gear, and you want to keep riding then buy it, use it.

I have the Helite Turtle 2 in black which they can come in as an option. Very comfortable and feels a little safer with it on especially in summer if you’re wearing something like the alpine air mesh jacket and not in leathers.

Thanks for a good review Have used both the summer and winter Helite jackets for a couple of years now and highly recommend With regards the connecting to the bike it is somewhat akin to clicking a seat belt-becomes second nature and zero hassle After adopting airbag jackets , I feel somewhat vulnerable now if I don’t use one I also found the Dainese jacket somewhat bulky but personal preference I guess

Wear the Helite vest myself. Once my mate and me were rear ended by a car. He suffered for months from back pain and needed orthopaedic treatment. I only suffered a mild concussion, courtesy of the Helite and the helmet. Worth every penny and actually comfortable in use.

Morning TMF - we bought Helite Turtles about 18 months or so ago and once you get into habit of connecting/disconnecting as you get on/off bike it becomes just part of the routine. One thing we have found is added wind break on colder days so end up wearing less layers underneath jacket in both cooler and warmer weather. Recommended although expensive what price your spine? Keep up the good work sir - like the kit reviews and yep, the Goldwing is lovely (not something I’d have admitted to 35 years agon😎

I have and use the helite turtle 2 vest and use it about half the time. The advantage to the design IMO is I can take back protector out of jacket when wearing the vest so much more comfortable off the bike. Also, I lock the vest to the bike when off walking around (use the same cable setup as with my helmet). Its more faff but have to lock the helmet anyway. It is hotter when wearing on very hot days. That said its more of a habit then anything - the wearing it. Once in the habit I wear it all the time, but when I take a break I get spoiled not putting it on (I wear jackets with back protectors when I do). All in all I think its better to wear it then not since it can only help. It also protects the neck and spine unlike the a star and dainese ones. Doesn't protect shoulder much but jackets do so maybe a good compromise. Note: where I live I've noticed the helite airbag jacket is a must have accessory for GS riders much like Daytona boots and Rukka ;)

Touring point of view: Bought Helite for my wife as passenger couple years ago. Based on her feedback I bought myself Hitair. Helite is more difficult to store in top case while touring (off bike). It is very hot in it during hot summer days. Hitair is better ventilated, should have biggest pillow around your neck on the market and folded lower back part is good feature since you do not sit on it and still is your butt protected:-) Price is more or less similar. Downside might be that there is no integrated back protector, but I found walking off bike with back protector (and hitair in topcase) more comfortable than with Helite. Not saying one is better than another, just my experience and reason why I chose hitair. But I am still tempted to buy Alpinestars Tech-Air 5 to wear it under my mesh jacket:-)

Hit-Air has a new airbag vest with an integrated back protector called the ST. It is the VHR vest combined with a SPIDI back protector. You can get the same vest as the SPIDI Air DPS but the Hit-Air branded one is a bit cheaper. I called the US distributor and they confirmed that the motorcycle and equestrian vests are the same. The only difference is the motorcycle vests have some extra reflective material and the equestrian vests come in more colors. In the end I decided on a Hit-Air VHR vest but couldn't find one in stock anywhere. I ordered a equestrian Advantage H vest instead which is the same as the VHR.

I purchased the inmotion vest, plus side wear it under your standard jacket, electronic module, not tethered, built in back protector, really comfortable, works off an app which updates your vest can send SOS if activated. Minus - expensive needs charging (bit like a phone once a week). Worth looking at ,used my one through the summer ,warm but ok. You can pay extra and upgrade it for track days ( it has something to do with g-forces and angles of lean compared to riding on street) french company sell them they are really helpful. If activated can be reset but I think after 5 activations you have to return it for service (fall off 5 times I’m using a car) hope this helps 👍🏻

Another thumbs up for the Helite. Love the peace of mind that it gives you and also the fact that you don’t then need a back protector in your jacket just as you mention. I also like the fact that the front is shorter than the large back protector. Excellent designed product.

I was wearing my Helite when I got rear-ended doing about 70 kph. (A cow went for the gap, I braked, my mate didn't.) Apparently I did a full sumersault and landed flat on my back, with enough force to bend the handlebar through 90 degrees with my knee as I took off. I can't remember the deployment, just one moment looking at a cow, the next looking at a very blue sky feeling like I was lying on a comfortable but tight fitting mattress. After a minute or two the bag slowly deflated. I walked away from that with a very mild concussion. The bike, meh, not so lucky - complete write-off. Expensive? About $800-$1100 NZ for a vest to avoid a possible trip to ICU, months of rehab and the ability to walk unaided. Incidentally, the mate who knocked me off, the mate who was following who saw me get knocked off and the guy who spooked the cow now all own Helite vests. All the gear, all the time. PS Buttercup never even noticed. No cows were hurt in this debacle.

As a year round, daily commuter, I’ve been looking at airbag vests for a while now. From what I’ve found, stuff that’s built into a jacket wouldn’t be the solution for me as it’s them limited to that jacket - not great when you wear leathers in the summer and textiles in the winter. That then leads me to vests. While there are multiple options, I particularly like the look of the Helite vests because of how they inflate over the top of the shoulders which traps your helmet to help prevent neck injuries. Only downside is the tether, which as you’ve mentioned in the video, wouldn’t be any help unless you’re thrown from the bike. They’ve now released an electronic version of the turtle vest which comes with a sensor you attach to the bike so it can detect things like being rear ended/side swiped so for me that seems the ideal solution. Only downside is that it’s £750. I know people will say things like “can’t put a price on safety” or “how much is your life worth” etc, but it’s still not cheap. Think this will be the way I go when I’ve got the funds as it seems to have the best of all the considerations.

@@robzz9002 yes, £10 I think. So another 240£ on top of a retail of 380£ - £620 , still cheaper than other stuff out there, use under any jacket or on track. As life and as thin as most back protector vests and also now has a feature if it's deployed it will ring the emergency services if you don't tell them not to via the app anywhere in Europe. And for someone that rides alone that's priceless

I have had my Helite turtle air vest for 4 years now. No it doesn’t look cool on my sports bike but it looks ok on my adventure bike and I believe it is worth the investment. The flouro gets noticed and if it stops one car hitting you it is worth it. I am 60 now and my old arthritic bones break easier than they used to. We all want to look cool on our bikes but really no one cares except other bikers , it’s all in the mind.

Agree. I don't care what I look like, avoiding an accident or walking away from one is much more important. It makes me cringe seeing bikers all dressed in black. Either their vanity exceeds the value they put on their life or they are plain stupid. No other explanation.

I've had mine for around a year. Not used it in anger, but happy to have it there. Connecting it becomes a habit, but I've still forgotten a few times, but easy to check while you are riding along. The additional connectors for the bike are fairly expensive though, but well worth it for reduced faffage! I like the more simplistic mechanical aspect of this system though. Nice overview as ever TMF!

For me .. all the gear all the time including my helite turtle 1 . It’s like some of your other commenters .. feels like my seat belt for the bike and thankfully haven’t had to use it. Though my bro-in-law was forced off his bike wearing his and he reckoned it really saved his back in the off. Great piece of kit and every rider should wear one IMO!

I use a Helite jacket with integrated airbag. As someone else has said its just like clipping the seat belt on and I don't ride without it now. Worth checking out their KZfaq vids of them in action. They inflate in 1/10th of a second and worth noting that the Helite also stabilises your helmet / head.

Thanks for the review. My wife rides with me only occasionally, but we both have Helite vests. I think they are brilliant. I've never felt too encumbered by it, or felt too hot on hot days (though Vancouver 'hot' is not like Arizona hot). Never fallen off with it, but I did meet a guy on the ferry a few years ago, who had fallen with the vest three times, on and off road. He felt it was an essential bit of kit. I don't care what others think of what I wear, or look like so that factor is off the list. I just think about what I want to be wearing if, or when, I come off the bike at 120 kph. At our age we just don't bounce the way we used to; now we break. Like all gear, if it saves your life (or spine) once, its worth it.

I have been using the Dianese D-Air Smart Jacket for just over a year. I chose this as I can wear different jackets and ride different motorcycles which is required as part of my job. Firstly, it is expensive and maintenance every two years is not a cheap option. It is comfortable normally, but in the summer, wearing it with pvc bags in the summer it's too hot! I tend not to wear it in the hot weather as it is to uncomfortable with the heat, I prefer to maintain concentration above the distraction unfortunately. As you mention in the video, these jackets are bulky, I have had to buy bigger jackets to go over the top. I have purchased jackets at least one size bigger. On the plus side, being stand alone works very well with the flexibility. Battery life is about 20hrs and the on/off switch being the top button works really well. I do sometimes forget to fasten it leaving the jacket switched off but when I move off and I dont feel the buzz from the jacket, I know what I have done. I think they are good products but are in early stages of development for normal use. Like the vid. 👍😉

IMO, these airbag vests work best when worn on the outside the jacket. Size up the vest and wear it over the coat.

Had a Helite vest right from the very start and it's a fantastic piece of kit. I understand that the police motorcyclists are now required to wear them to maintain their insurance cover, the vests are also very popular with horse riders which is where the vests were originally developed and tested. The uptodate ones are a little lighter to wear than the older ones but no real hassle in use. Fortunately have never tested mine in anger but it’s nice to have that reassurance factor.

Huh I bought the exact same Helite about a year ago after seeing that viral video the police released of that biker who was in a head on collision and managed to survive (with an airbag jacket). I tested the helite at the MCN show too which was fun. It's reassuring on the motorway especially having 2 back protectors (jacket and vest) haha

Well as iv'e been getting older i have gradually invested in a blubber bag system, it's quite expensive but you don't notice the cost as it's added to your weekly shopping bill over a long period, you will of course need to change you jacket .... and trousers !!!

I bought the Ixon airvest last year, it works on gps and accelerometers and deploys if you are about to be hit as well as falling off the bike. It's very lightweight and discreet and you wear it under any jacket. A very clever and practical piece of kit. I love it. 400 euro for the vest and 400 euro for the "brain" as they call it Or 10 euro per month for 4 years. Highly recommend!

Good video, I’ve been looking forward to this one as I own a Helite Turtle 2 myself in black, problem is I never wear it because of the hassle!? If nothing else you have given me motivation to wear it always, after all how hard can it be! Interesting observations about the battery recharchable options, I think for me that would be even more hassle than the lanyard system I already have. So thanks for pointing out the pros and cons of various options available to us mortal riders! Cheers.

I have the Alpinestar Techair airbag, it zips into a Techair compatible jacket. It is the road going version, so has a different algorithm than the track airbag, in that detect the movements specific to the type of riding you do on the road. The first deployment occurred in a slow motion tip over on a shingle road, I was squeezed tightly by the expansion for around 5 seconds before it automatically deflated. The down side is that it is quite heavy, although you quickly get used to it. It contains 2 gas cylinders so you can have 2 offs before you need to replace them. I have established that my motorcycle gear is covered on my contents insurance including the cost of recharging the gas cylinders. The battery life of the jacket is 29 hours, so I can commute for a month between charging, which I then do overnight. There are LEDs to indicate battery status. I have worn the jacket in temperatures ranging from -5°c to 32°c with a liner from another jacket in the cold conditions. It does feel quite warm above 30°.

I've been using the IXON branded In&Motion airbag. It's an internal electronic waistcoat that can be worn under all of my jackets. The battery lasts me 2 full days when instructing. When on, you do not notice it and it doesn't look like you are going sailing 🤣

I have 2 of the A* TechAir airbags. It has 2 modes- track and road. In road mode it will detect being T-boned. The service interval is 2 yrs on these and need charging every 20hrs of riding. Downside is that they are heavy till you wear them but feel fine on the bike. They are also warm - no breathable layer under your leathers...

I wear a Hitair vest. My view is that it will hopefully reduce a serious injury crash to a minor one. Living rather than dead; walking rather than needing a wheelchair; bruises rather than breaks and organ damage. And by the way I have forgotten that I was tethered. It does work and you do feel a chump!

The past year I've ridden with my Klim airbag, which I received after a pre-order last spring (2020). It's a standalone vest, I can use it with any jacket (I wear Klim jackets primarily anyway). I really like it; though I've not yet had to test it in practice (thank goodness and knock on wood). It's lightweight, comfortable, and works with a phone app to check the battery, charge it, and update the algorithm via Bluetooth (so wirelessly). So far... so good.

@@TheMissendenFlyer No tether, it's a fancy standalone vest that goes under your jacket. Uses the MotoGP tech to run it; you have to charge it and it has onboard computers. It is supposed to deploy on collision from the back or side.

I have had the Helite turtle back but the helite adventure jacket version now for 2 years and I ride a GS, I live in South Africa and drivers leave a lot to desire. I have been pushed of my bike by bad drivers and I swear by the way it protected me and my neck. With this I do not need to wear a neck brace. I will be buying another one the same as the one shown in your video as this is better for our hot weather. Great Chanel and good content regards. Kevin

Bought a basic Helite five years ago at the bike show from the supplier. I tried it on and the salesman inflated it and then unbeknown to me whacked me in the back with a lump hammer. Didn't hurt a bit so I parted with my cash and have worn it ever since. Never had to use it anger and let's hope I don't but I do feel reassured wearing it. If I ever take it off it's like driving the car without a seat belt on.

Interesting video, thanks TMF. I’ve often considered an airbag jacket as I ride shall we say enthusiastically and I commute through heavy traffic on fast roads. I would go for something like the hellite jacket as long as I could wear it under my jacket without the high vis stuff. I appreciate the video as I may of chosen a jacket like the Dainese one but would hate it for all of the same reasons you don’t like it, cheers.

I decided to go for a safety vest from Alpinestars named Tech-Air 5. I got a good deal during Black week! You wear it under you jacket and it does feel fine on. Looking forward to the mc season.

I have the Helite two. Haven't taken the back protector out of the jacket though. Thinking about that's not a bad idea. The vest does take some getting used to with the weight and the clipping and unclipping. Also one safety issue I wouldn't carry anything in the chest pocket area.

There's one more type. Dainese D Air also link to some bikes, such as the ducati Multistrada d air. Sensors in the bike hook up with the jacket and I would assume would allow deployment on a side impact. Worth looking into and maybe more manufactures should look into it...

I have the Klim In & reach airbag and like a seatbelt in a car I could not imagine not wearing it. It’s a bit warm in the summer but it’s worth it. I hope I never need it but grateful I have it.

I use the Ixon IX-airbag U03 for 2 years now . These are the + points of this vest: -It is an electronic airbag so its reactiontime is way better than a tethered one in case of a collision with a car. -It is made to wear under your motorcycle jacket, so you stay in charge of your own styling. -It is light and very comfortable. I never notice I am actually wearing an airbag. -It has an integrated backprotector -i can jump on any bike any time and I will be protected. i do not need a strap on the bike -its protection is very complete : thorax,abdomen,spine,neck and collarbone (some say only helite protects the neck....wrong) -it can be used both on the road and on track ( with different algorythmes) not many can do that -after deployment, you can reload a new canister yourself, without sending it back. -you have a choice : buy the vest and buy the in&motion subscription at once OR lease the in&motion subscription with certain benefits. A lot of people don't understand that in & motion is the only brand that actually gives you that choice and see it as a negative thing. IT IS A POSITIVE thing, you have a choice. - In 9 countries in europe , Belgium included there is a cooperation with liberty rider, an app that calls emergency services when you go down. Infact if the airbag deploys your phone will call the emergency services with your GPS coordinats if you do not react within a certain time. This is a free service for users that lease the in&motion system. - The last one is the best for me : You get livelong updates ( over your wifi while charging the battery) about 3 times a year on the actual software and the actual algorythmes. In&motion is a community based system. The data of all real driven miles ( over 30.000.000) of all users and the real time data of all deployments are collected and shared and used to finetune and learn the algorythmes and are uploaded about 3 times a year to the airbagvests of all the users. No other system is offering this and that is what makes the difference .It uses the power of mass data to keep updating the technology of all its users for the years to come. These are the most important reasons , for me , that this airbagsystem is one of the most advanced . To be complete : KLIM,Furygan,RST,Held and Ixon are all equiped with this exact same In&Motion system . Andy, Thanks for another good video. I am happy with all video's that highlight the safety of airbagsystems on a motorcycle, because I feel they have often been overlooked in the past although , just like other available gear they offer a lot of extra protection incase of an accident. I just think it is a pity that the current evolution in the possibilities of electronic airbags is not sufficiently highlighted. The tethered ones are the past. It is not normal that in 2021, we are still looking at these items. I have a question for people that don't trust the electronics and software : Would you think it's normal if your cars airbags in 2021 are triggered by a strap at the frontbumper that pulls out a valve in a canister , incase of a collision? I don't . The technology is there, embrace it.

Good points in this; but I don't think the "embracing of electronic technology" is the issue. What happens to your super 2021 (now 2022) "technology" if you don't pay your subscription? The tethered option is just a mechanical way of reaching the same ends... Being able to "just jump on, rather than have to tether yourself" makes it sound like tethering yourself is a ball-ache? It is about as inconvenient as having to ...put your gloves on? Or do your helmet up... Even if I were a busy person, I am sure the extra 2, maybe 3 seconds to connect up would be achievable... I guess in reality "forgetting to tether" is about as likely as "forgetting to charge your electronic battery"? Plus, every "electronic" option either isn't user serviceable, or costs 2-3 times more to replace the cannister than the Helite option. Plus, of all the research I have done...NONE of the airbag systems offer the same amount of protection as the Helite...and surely...that's the point? A super duper electronic vest that gives "some" protection, or an old, out dated "mechanical vest" that gives you A LOT of protection...? I guess I will happily concede..the Helite electronic option may be the best compromise. No subscription. Best actual coverage. Anyway, not having a go...just politely responding... Arguably, as well, a loose fitting air vest on top will provide better airflow in hot weather than a tighter fitting vest under your jacket as well? Ride safe!

@@danielb1563 You have some points and I am not trying to convince people...Oh wait , maybe I am :) But I am afraid , you did not read my points completely. You do not need a yearly subscription , if you don't want one. You can just buy the vest and subscribe for life at once if you think that is the best solution for you. Your vest will be updated for life with always the latest algorythmes, without the hassle of monthly or yearly payments. You do one payment when you purchase the vest and make an In&Motion account for life at home . SO you have a choise. Some people just prefer it yearly or monthly. They can make that choise too. I have worn the helite vest over my gear. Believe me , it is way heavier and less comfortable then my Ixon undervest. And that is normal. In the case of the Ixon, It is your gear that protects the airbagvest from tearing incase of a drop. In case of the Helite above your gear, that airbagvest in itself has to be made strong enough to survive direct contact to the street. You are right, On the current market the Helite gives the highest "volume" so I am sure that is important, but it is not that other brands gives just "some" protection. There has been a lot of effort to protect on all the right places. And also , if someone is convinced Helite has the best protection, they can choose to buy the E-Turtle. At least this will have a decent response time in case of a direct collision. Safety is way more then just "volume". The thetered versions have way to many flaws where they will not react (lowsider slide with the bike) or react way to late ( direct collisions, where the rider is catapulted towards a car in a direct hit.). The thing I want to point out is that a thetered vest is fine and way better then no vest, but these days , with the current state of knowledge regarding algorythmes ,an electronc vest offers protection in way more catastrophic situations. On that point , I want to remark that I send some questions to HELITE ( I do my homework thorough) in the past regarding the way they update their algorithmes in their E-turtle. I never got an answer.tbh, I think they do not update and I am not OK with that.... In&Motion is VERY transparant about that and in the 3 years I have the product, every update is announced with details regarding what they changed and in those 3 years, reaction times got better, batterylife is enhanced, In the beginning some situations were not fully covered that now are (you do not want an unjustified deployment) So with the millions of km's of riding feedback from all clients ( they gather that automaticly when you download new algorythmes, you also upload rider data) they come pretty close to perfection regarding the algorytmes. Again : protection is not just about "volume". f.e. Alpinestars tech air five also protects the shoulders. No other vest does that. Not my Ixon,or Klim, Furygan etc. , but also not Helite. So some people will choose the Tech-air 5 just for that reason alone. It is also more comfortably worn under any Jacket . I mean , everyone has to look what is important for them and that is fine, as long as they are fully aware and informed of the pro's and contra's of the technique or product , they choose.

Have worn a Helite for the past year after seeing a presentation at my SERV Blood bike social, they did a great deal for us and would never ride without it again, very comfy.many police, paramedic riders are having them issued as standard equipment.

Good experience over 2 years with Alpinestar Tech-Air which unlike the Dainese can cope with rear shunts. Both systems are highly developed however and I like the fact that the Argon gas inflation takes approximately 25 milliseconds on the Alpinestars, cocooning an even larger area of the rider than D-air covers (back, shoulders, kidneys, chest and upper abdomen) for a full five seconds before deflating. Also the decision to run with with a modular airbag system means that you have the same levels of protection sheathed in textile or leather and can swap jackets as the mood, fashion, pocket and weather dictates. This means arguably less flexibility for the Dainese product and should the system deploy the inflator AND jacket have to be sent back for repair.

Crashed Friday November 18th 2022 on the 605 in Los Angeles. Thankfully, I was wearing my HIT-AIR air vest, with additional back pad and chest plates. That vest saved my life. Worth wearing...ATGAT.

I’ve got the Alpinestars Tech air Street (great vest, integrates into any tech-air alpinestars textile jacks) I also have the Tech Air 5 which is now my go-to as it works under both my leather jacket and my rukka (sizeed up and have enough space underneath) Both are Super simple, no faffing and easy to use. Also have the best algorithms and deployment times on the market as alpinestars has been developing them for donkeys with MotoGP riders and loads of street rider data. TMF I would be happy to lend you both with more details to have a look at if you wanted

Helite all the way. I've had mine for about 5 years. Had to do a recent basic service myself as there was a problem with the courier. One other thing is i can't wear it when I'm doing my blood runs as i have to wear the official Essex Bloodrunners hi-viz jacket with the Emergency Blood logo and charity id embossed on it.
