That's always been true for electronics, and its especially true with cell phones. Technology doesn't improve just based on the calendar month. The only significant change in cell phone tech, for example, hasn't been apparent since the move to 5G -- which is still grossly underutilized. A scant bit more power and new camera processing software. That's all people are really paying for.

@mtadc1545 Yeah, Framework (and surprisingly the Tongfang resellers like XMG and Eluktronics) seem to be the winners this year. Even though the 16 inch Framework Laptop was announced in the third quarter of 2023 and planned to be released by the end of 2023, it was ultimately delayed for several reasons to fix several issues. However, thr transparency they showed while fixing these issues is commendable, which is why I still kept my pre-order (as well as nothing else having good Linux support with a 16 : 10 screen in the U.S.).

Something I think that's not talked about more, especially in the 14" gaming laptop market, is the adoption of the higher wattage usb c power delivery. I'm also super excited for the MSI Trascend or whatever mainly because it's using PD 3.1, along with Framework 16. Standardization is the way forward with powering these devices.

I would be cautiously optimistic. Lenovo has already shown their laptops won't charge at max USB-C rates unless you buy and use their own dedicated charger. If you also know the phone market, there's also many, many different battery technologies developing at the same time, resulting in different charging standards and speeds, even though they're all USB-C

Framework actually delayed their chargers for the 16 inch laptops to get it right. So I'm sure their 180 watt charger will be the best on the market, at least until a 240 watt option appears (but one currently doesn't exist).

Hello Josh, I need your advice today for a new laptop. Because water leaked out of my sports bag, directly onto my laptop, onto the screen, during the exam period. I need a new laptop. Could you please advise me and tell me if the dual-screen feature is suitable for this? I'm studying engineering, where I use various programming programs. C++, Java, Python, as well as 3D CAD, technical drawing. Is it suitable for that, or can you recommend another one? Thank you for your help.

My subjective viewpoint is that Intel, AMD, Nvidia don't have much new upgrades to offer because we have reached the current peak in technology. CPUs, GPUs are already innovated to the level where there aren't massive upgrades possible, without some totally new technology (such as optical computing for example). Nanometer race is getting to an end, since making things smaller with current technology isn't yielding lot of returns. Laptops themselves are already maxed out as well. Displays are edge to edge, batteries with maximum allowed capacity, cooling at its max where there isn't any room to add more power to the system. Screens look nicer than ever with high resolutions and color accuracy, etc. I got the Slim 7i last year and really don't really see what there is to improve after this. It is at its peak and has all the good stuff already. Similar story in mobile phone industry where the improvements are just incremental for the past few years already. Tech sector is laying off lot of people, to replace with AI.. while AI itself is still too raw and untested. This will likely come back to bite some time soon. Given the situation with Boeing, 2024 may be a year where lot of red starts to show in the stock market. Time will tell.

So many laptops without numpads. To me this says that most laptops are oriented towards either homes/gamers or graphical content creators, and certainly not to people in the scientific or engineering community, or financial/administrative community, where a numpad is often a must. To me, any laptop bigger than 15" without numpad is just a miss. The space is there, why not use it. As a business owner in the engineering sector, I even use the little numpad inside the touchpad on my asus 13.3" from time to time when I'm away from home and want work getting done. Brilliant feature!

Awesome overview of CES laptop releases with your very tasteful insight on what actually counts as upgrades vs marketing shenanigans. Absolutely more of this. Excited to see the real-world results of Intel's 14th gen charade vs 13th gen and AMD. Seems that with the new looks-focused approach and the disappointment expected from Intel, manufacturers would have to actively take their older models off the market, just to be able to sell their newer ones.

Hey josh i need to purchase a laptop for my university right now and i was strongly leaning towards purchasing the 2023 legion slim 7 with i7 13th gen and RTX 4060. But then came the CES along with a redesigned Zephyrus G14 and G16. So, Is it worth it to wait for the G16 to launch? As it highly depends on the pricing for me, Do you have any idea about the pricing of the new Zephyrus G16, are they gonna bump up the prices compared to the last year because of a more premium display, build and speaker system?

Intel, AMD and Windows need to sit down and figure out some kind of unified strategy for performance and battery life or else by the time it's really bad it will be too late to catch up. The development to market time line is not short and the competition is not stagnant.

My 2013 MBP i5, 8GB RAM, is still going strong. Light, does day-to-day tasks and Civ 5, and I have the latest macOS on it with a workaround. :) This is small, light, useful, and has all the ports (except USB-C, but that's okay). Battery life is fantastic; it's my road warrior. For day-to-day tasks, my Alienware X14 is doing a good job but am mostly using it as a desktop replacement at this point, with a docking station, external keyboard and mouse, and a large Alienware monitor. It does travel once in a while but is hobbled by battery performance. It compiles my Camtasia videos pretty well and plays Baldur's Gate 3 well, too.

Hello Joshy, you hit it out of the park with this video. It's a pity if you didn't take the chance to film something substantial with Jarrod. I always like your review videos for the bluntness (no holding back out of fear of backlash) and focus on practicality/usability (battery life, portability, heat on keyboard deck etc.) I had a slight worry before opening this video up, that it would just be another typical CES round-up like others do where they don't talk about any negatives. But you delivered perfectly again. BTW do you think all the 2024 laptops using Meteor Lake Ultra Core CPUs are being made to use unswappable LPDDR5x due to pressure from Intel or maybe because it has some kind of synergy with the iGPU or AI stuff on the chip?
@JustJoshTech
@JustJoshTech 4 ай бұрын
Thanks mate. Glad I could deliver. So Jarrod and I did have a nice breakfast together, but other than that we were both working so hard that we didn't have time to really sit down and do something more substantial unfortunately. Re the soldered memory. I don't know but my guess is that thinner lighter laptops sell better.... but its a guess
@cameronbosch1213
@cameronbosch1213 4 ай бұрын
The funny thing is Dell could have used CAMM to use LPDDR5x RAM and still made it swappable, but I think they just got greedy. Also, the managed to downgrade the storage of the XPS 16; the 2020 - 2023 XPS 15 & 17 both could take 2 SSDs; now they can only take one!

@cameronbosch1213
@cameronbosch1213 3 ай бұрын
The Flow x13 is pretty good. Unfortunately, it still uses a M.2 2230 SSD, meaning you're currently limited to using that size of SSD, which at the moment only goes up to 2 TB, and is harder to find. The x16 from 2023 is a step back from the 2022 model in terms of battery life because the Intel 13th gen CPU uses more power and is less efficient than the AMD Ryzen 6000 CPU it was replacing. They're both still good options, but given they're both limited to an RTX 4070 at the top end (not a big deal for the x13 as that is literally a 13.4 inch laptop with a dGPU, but more annoying for the x16) and are quite expensive for what they offer. Granted, I do like the touch screen functionality and XG Mobile port on the laptops; just be prepared to spend a LOT of money on the RTX 4090 XG Mobile. Personally, they're some of the only Windows laptops I'd buy from 2023 or 2024.

Glossy screens being a trend and small arrows keys are two things that will always prevent me to buy these laptops. I think small laptops are going in the wrong direction and doesn't match anymore with needs of people. Framework?
@Healyum51
@Healyum51 4 ай бұрын
@@cameronbosch1213 I checked their website and it is small arrow keys too. Framework is a good project and can match needs of lots of people but it has by design its own limitation. What if there is breakthrought in terms of termals or battery, and everything needs to be built differently ? Starting to 1600 or 1900 prebuildt for 16 inch seems expansive, considering that by design too the laptop is forced to be behind on lots of aspects. Furthermore, I was speaking in general. There are bad trends since almost 5 or 6 years. All trends that are a customer regression are a bad trend. Laptops make more noise, have more heat, less ports, numpad are removed, small arrows keys that are not user friendly to use, speakers become garbage while they were all decents or very good 10 years ago, build problems on almost every high-end models, battery life that don't progress, glossy screens which is a pain to work with, etc. Who are the people using small laptops in general ? It is students, people who move a lot, carry their laptop. These people need laptop with 10-12 hours battery, screen that could be discret with no annoying reflexion (in the library, classroom, train...), usable ports like hdmi to connect to a videoprojector to do a presentation, 2 jacks depending on the headset they have, no noise at all and no heat, numpad for productivity because trust me you write a lot of its when you are a student or work on excel, etc... Considering the small size of the laptops, and that people who bought them are not especially richs, they should be in a 800-1700 range maximum too.

A belated welcome to Arizona. You're right! That drive is beautiful. I made that trip many times for work myself over the years. I dig your videos. You and the team do a great job and appear not to be shills for the OEM's. I appreciate that. Keep up the good work. We want your mum to continue to be proud. Lastly, yes, if your up for travel, I'd love to see more videos on shows like CES. By the way, I'm trying out a Beelink NER 6 Ryzen 9 6900 HX. Get's good reviews, plays games, and is meets my application for mobility. Perhaps you can look at some of the better NUC style computers in the future????? Thanks!!!

Great summary - more insightful and informative than all the other single product videos that I’ve watched from CES 2024 that simply hype the content up whether they mean to or not. As always, the comparisons between competitors is what really helps to get a handle on these new releases. Great job Josh! 👍🏽 I’m particularly pleased to see you exploding the same old new product year hype from Intel. Frankly it’s shocking how every year they promise efficiency improvements and every year they miss by miles. Meanwhile AMD, Apple & soon Qualcomm will be increasing their efficiency superiority lead. Finally just looking at your performance charts and giving a shout out to last autumn’s AMD powered HP Pavilion Plus 14. This is currently reduced to under £1,000/$1,000 in the UK & Europe in the Ryzen 7 7840U and 1TB spec. Definitely punches above its weight as an excellent good value but top spec package.

Like always a wonderful video.I wonder why all brands are so hesitant to use newer ways of cooling, I have yet to see a laptop or even console use air-jet as a thinner and much more silent cooling option.

I had high hopes for the XPS 14, but Dell ruined the keyboard for me. So if Lenovo fixed the cooling in the X1 Carbon this year, my next machine will again be a X1. Especially since they finally managed to put a 120Hz panel inside and ports are still superior.

Qualcomm demoed two configs. One at 80w and another at 23w TDP. Even the 23w (which could be passively cooled, like an iPad or MacBook Air) had a pretty awesome 2780/14000 Geekbench 6.2. Also, keep in mind those are system TDP not CPU-only figures. The TDP of a 12-core M3 Pro only (CPU/GPU) is up to 30w.

Tbh i really prefer micro sd slots. Most devices use the small ones and then you dont have to bring the big one. Moreover the big one just takes up to much space which could be used for other i/o. If you are using any device using the big one like a camera, bringing an adapter is not your main concern
