Today we are reviewing a vintage Seiko 7548, the granddaddy of the legendary SKX007.
Sharing the same case style, it will be known and usually mistaken for it. But this is a different beast altogether.
Powered by a very special quartz movement that is actually based on the mechanical, it is serviceable, and was considered a bit of a higher end movement when it was released costing more than an equivalent Omega of the time. It was also used in the Tuna making this a proper Prospex of the time.
The watch itself is timeless in design and honestly one of my favorite shapes when it comes to Seiko.
The lume is not that impressive, but given the age of the watch it is to be expected.
Enjoy the video and as usual, the watch is prettier in person than in the video, NO MATTER HOW MUCH I TRY to catch that beauty :)

Bought one of these when I was commissioned as a 2LT in the the USAF in 1987. My first good watch, still with me and worn regularly. I wore it during many deployments over 22 years. In fact, I was wearing mine at 35,000 ft in the E-3 while Stormin’ Norman was wearing his on the ground somewhere below. I will never part with this watch; too much history and sentimental value. Plus, it just works without fail. Thanks for this review

I ran across one today that has seen some wear asking ¥16900 at my local thrift store in Tokyo. I’m tempted to go pick it up and clean it up. Needs new hands, bezel and Crystal and it was working when I saw it. I always thought these were cooler than the SKX, actually made in Japan with kanji. Ok, I talked myself into it!… thanks for the video.!

This is a great watch. I've had mine for about 12 years now. Note that the crown position is exactly at 4 o'clock instead of 3:45 like the SKX. My 7002 which preceded the SKX is also at 4 o'clock as was the 6309 slim that preceded the 7002. I notice on your 7548 that the seconds hand does not land exactly on the markers. That is unusual for these old Seiko quartz watches. They were usually dead on the mark.
@dannybrizzi9394
@dannybrizzi9394 4 жыл бұрын
Nothing unusual about the seconds hand not hitting the marker, it's just a sign that the movement has been serviced and the watchmaker did not take the time (or did not have the skill) to mount the hand dead on the marker.

@Blaze016
@Blaze016 3 жыл бұрын
@@roadgent7921 I like it! The Pepsi bezel's a bit more conspicuous than I was expecting, though. Mainly due to the lighter blue it uses, and it's bigger in relation to the watch, with bigger numbers. It's a decent size for me at least, right around middle of the road. Lug to lug is a bit long, I think (about 50mm), but the watch seems smaller due to the relatively smaller dial size. While I would like to eventually get a SKX-style Seiko watch (with 4 o'clock crown) in solar, the SNE's still quite a nice watch. It looks like a cool Seiko take on the classic Rolex Submariner look. In case you want the SNE's measurements, here's what I found, approximately: 20mm lug width 50mm lug tip to lug tip (49.5mm spring bar to spring bar) 12mm case thickness 43mm case width 32mm dial width 5.5mm bezel thickness (not sure if that's the correct term? Not how flat it is, but how wide the circle line is) If you have the money, I say you should get it ASAP. I paid about 300$ for it on eBay back in early February. I'm not sure if the watch model's being produced anymore, so prices could rise.

@roadgent7921 3 жыл бұрын
@@Blaze016 Many thanks for that. Interesting the lugs are 20mm. I am looking for one, but it looks like the 439 is not a Euro market watch (I'm UK) so I might have to settle for a 435 or the newer 549. Both are the same except for colours. Thanks again.

@@ΠαῦλοςΠαυλίδης-χ7θ Hello. I agree, it should be the other way around. 7548 came out in 1978, SKX was 1996. The SKX was made specifically to look like the 7548 but obviously with the SKX being a mechanical that's where the similarity ends. I have both (pepsi variant) a 1983 7548 and a 2004 skx and they look practically identical however there are some slight differences looks wise, the main being: 1. dial diameter is about 1mm less on the 7548, case seems about 1mm different as well although that's me judging by eye only. 2. Bezel Colours (red/blue) slightly darker on skx, although this is prob due to UV fading on older watch. 3. Crown positions are about 5 degrees different (1 sec on bezel). 4. There are some tiny differences in the hands, but not really noticeable. 5. Bezels are slightly different, mainly the skx having a 120 uni-dir and the 7548 is 60 Bi-dir, The knurling is different and the side profile angle is slightly different. Again not ever so noticeable unless you look closely. Spencer Klein is the expert on 7548s. When serviced properly he trims them on average to 1 sec in 50 days. He did one that was 40y old for a guy in Singapore to 1 sec in 100 days. He did comment that you cant swap the movements between 7548/SKX as he tried it. Sorry I rambled on a bit there. 😎

@@ΠαῦλοςΠαυλίδης-χ7θ the skx is definitely younger than the 7548. The 7548 is the father of the skx . Period . In fact fact it’s one of a few fathers of the skx . So the skx definitely came later making it younger than the 7548, 7c etc

It’s crazy the parallels between Quartz and Automatic/Mechanical watches and Manual and Automatic cars. Years ago, manual was standard and if you wanted an automatic, you had to pay extra money. Same with quartz watches. Automatic/Mechanical watches were standard and Quartz would cost you extra. Fast forward a few years and now Automatic cars are standard and, for some reason, manual will usually cost you extra (especially on the used market, if you can even find one) and now, Quartz is seen as “cheap” and “common” and Automatic/Mechanical will cost you extra. 🤔 interesting.
@traviswalker8933
@traviswalker8933 4 жыл бұрын
You can credit Timex and Casio for "mass producing" quartz watches which brought the cost down. You can still get entry level Seiko 5s for cheap. The price of automatic watches will depend upon the brand and model, just like a car.

This type of Seiko model like SKS is the most overrated watch in the world, it has serious finishing problems like the bezel that does not align with the markers, misaligned seconds hand of the markers and in this model the lume is off center, honestly they are bad watches finished and that do not catch my attention, Nautica or Fossil watches are much better finished and the experts wrinkle their nose at them, I will never understand that !

Disagree Paulo. These 7548 when new (1978 to 1985) were one of the all time great watches. When you see one now it is likely to have been taken apart, serviced, maybe relumed. The issues you've mentioned are almost certain to be due to the lack of skill by the service guy. If serviced right and QT regulated they will keep 1 sec per 50 days.
