1996 I dressed up as Harpo for a Halloween party. I didn’t speak to anyone the whole night, did the leg trick , blew the horn. It was amazing how my friends and everyone at the party just got used to it as the night went on. My girlfriend at the time wasn’t thrilled.

I found myself absolutely in love with Arrabella's character (Played by Lilian Roth) who played the daughter of Mrs. Rittenhouse (Margaret Dumont). She (Arrabella) even had a singing part, a duet with her boyfriend Johnny Parker. It went something like; 'Tell me, dear, why am I so romantic...When you're near, why am I so romantic? What a grand feeling, when your lips meet mine...That certain something comes reeling, up and down my spine.' Something like that. It was cute and the two of them looked cute together. This is my favorite Marx Brothers movie. My favorite part was when Harpo and Chico were trying to expose Rosco Chandler as Abe Kibibel. (He's A-be, the fish man, A-be, the fish man...) Groucho as Capt. Spalding, the hunter who returned from Africa, told some fanciful tales about shooting an elephant in his pajamas (How he got into my pajamas, I have no idea) And bagging (Bagging sounds like begging) six tigers to go away because they were the most persistent tigers he ever came across. While there they also took some pictures of the Native girls, but they weren't developed, but they're going back... [Mrs Rittenhouse interjects] Lovely speech, Captain, thank you. Rosco Chandler then shouts 'Three cheers for Captain Spalding' and Harpo returns with three chairs :P The humor in Marx Brother movies wasn't always obvious. Sometimes you had to think a while and be familiar with pop culture references that were relevant at the time and I admire all their movies specifically FOR that. If you watch their material enough, it's like all four and everyone with screen credit are still here. Time capsules...That's what they are. Thanks for reading =)

Nice! If you're at all interested, I'd highly recommend his biography, "Harpo Speaks!". Some great stuff in there, including when he went to perform in Russia and was being grilled by the border guards who had become suspicious of him. When they searched his trunk, they removed "four hundred knives, two revolvers, three stilettos, half a dozen bottles marked POISON, and a collection of red wigs and false beards, mustaches and hands".

dont forget Margaret Dumont. She was Groucho's straight man and a critical part of the madness. She later said one thing that made them so funny was that she never really got the jokes so her look of perplexity was real. add in Zeppo as Jammison taking a letter to Hunadunna and it gets even better.

I'm not claiming I've seen their movies more times than anyone, but I do know their films very well. A few weeks ago I watched Animal Crackers in the bluray edition (released 2016) and I was jarred to hear Groucho sing "I think I'll make her", meaning I will try go go to bed with Margaret Dumont. How could I be surprised to hear that? Simple; the accompany material in the bluray set says this print is from England, where that line was not censored as it was in America.
