I was flatting with a friend back in 2006 who had almost no interest in wrestling but was absolutely fascinated by King Bookaaaaah whenever we put Smackdown on. Even long after he moved out whenever I'd catch up with him he'd greet me with an "ALL.... HAIL... KING..... BOOKKAAAAHH!!!" and would ask me if Lashley and Finlay were still fighting 😅 (seriously they had so many matches, I even saw them fight in the first ever WWE show in NZ!).

It's such a shame that the King Booker character came so late in his career. It barely lasted a year before he semi-retired, and while he ended up making the most money that year, main eventing for six months took its toll on his body. During his WWE run, Booker was happy making money and working with his friends and a lot of great talent in the upper mid-card, and was perfectly content staying out of the main event due to how much of a toll it takes on your body. I don't think people realize that Booker was already over 40 at this point with 20 years of wrestling under his belt. When people ask why Booker didn't win more world titles in WWE (three), it's mostly because he knew he wasn't going to be wrestling too much longer and didn't want to work the main event schedule, and was content elsewhere on the card. If you get your match done early, you get to leave with your wife early lol.

King Booker was awesome. Looking back, I love that, unlike most of the KIng of the Ring winners, Booker actually leaned into the whole "King" persona. Most of them just wore the crown and the robe and that was it.
