I would like to remark that this is only my own ranking of the actors who have played the role of Edward Rochester in various adaptations of Charlotte Bronte's novel Jane Eyre. During watching this video you can easily many changes, for example how different were the wedding gowns of the main character.
I used the parts of the following films: from 1944, 1983, 1996, 1997 and 2006.
Music: Vivaldi's Four Seasons

Timothy Dalton was Rochester, stepping of C. Bronte's book. His brooding, mannerism, passion and devotion toward Jane was absolutely, scarringly, perfectly delivered by Timothy.

Dalton is intense, real, restless, vulnerable. His Rochester is hungry for gentle and lasting love, for a pure heart to treasure forever. He can be so moody and wild, but when he confesses his love to Jane he is so tender and terrified of being rejected. Timothy Dalton is Rochester. Rochester has got his face, he speaks with his unforgettable voice, which, alone, is a declaration of love.

Sorry to disagree, but he was so unnatural in the role. No chemistry either. To me Michael Jayston is the one and only Mr. Rochester, he not just plays this character, he has become the character, as if he had just walked out of the book, as a real person, not a Byronic hero.

Timothy Dalton is the only real Rochester) others made a good job, but Dalton's Rochester is real. He juste brought the character to real life. He made the role precisely from the book. And this eyes full of internal fire and amazing voice of hidden hunting beast. The real energy of Vulcan. And so defenselessly emotionally naked when Jane decides to leave him. He is just real Rochester in this fascinating brilliant acting work. Loved him a lot. Beyond comparison for sure.

The best Rochester ever on the silver screen. Dalton is a very talented and charismatic man. The camera loves him, and honestly his interpretation of some of the great characters in English literature is second to none. He seems to understand the authors intent and vision for the many characters he has played including the Bond films he was in. I just think he played his roles truer to the books than anyone else. I like him better as James Bond than Sean Connery, believe it or not. This man was a mega talent on screen and on stage, and yet in my opinion he was so underrated...... Go figure. All I can say is,..... thank you, Mr Timothy Dalton for the many years of entertainment your brilliant performances have given us.

For me, the one and only Mr. Rochester's literary character brought to life is Timothy Dalton's. He leaves nothing to chance, and his multi-talented acting creates that sort of charm which is so unique and for me doesn't exist in any other version of this fantastic gothic novel. His age is irrelevant, so is admireable Zelah Clark's, who is equally No.1

For me Dalton IS Edward Rochester. And I won't accept the argument that he is too handsome simply because every time has its own beauty standards. In his times he may have been considered 'not handsome at all' (I don't recall Bronte actually describing him as ugly). But his passion, his energy, his moodiness, that look of his that penetrates right into the soul -that what makes his Rochester real, IMO.
@whatevergoesforme5129
@whatevergoesforme5129 3 жыл бұрын
I actually don't care if he is too handsome for the role because what is important is not the face and height for me but his acting chops, the delivery of those long lines taken from the novel that other actors who played Rochester would have hard time doing (given that TD is a classically trained Shakespearean actor), his voice, his overall persona as Rochester that others could not nail. For the first time, I pitied Rochester when he pleaded with Jane to stay with him. I did not in the book and only understood how that scene in the book was meant to be played out after watching TD's interpretation. It was meant to show why Jane would struggle to leave him despite having a strong Christian faith.

@@whatevergoesforme5129 I first read Jane Eyre when I was 14 and I have enjoyed all the other movies, but Timothy Dalton is the Rochester I envisioned when I first read the book. When he was crying because she wouldn't stay with him I felt so bad I couldn't even look at him.

@@cherylwilkinson3228 I also read Jane Eyre as a teen, forgot the exact age LOL. But at the time, I said to myself GOOD RIDDANCE! Maybe because I was young and did not like the idea of a married man who was not that handsome and also older than Jane ending up with her. I wanted her to leave him and was glad she was not duped by his pleadings then. Plus it was not my favorite classic book at that time. My favorite was Wuthering Heights (TD also played Heathcliff). I revisited Jane Eyre after watching Timothy Dalton's version of Rochester and saw the character in a new light. I did not pity him the first time I read the book. I pitied more Jane's missionary cousin hehehee. Now, it is the opposite.

@@whatevergoesforme5129 I think a lot of people forget when they are reading the story that Rochester was betrayed by everyone he cared about. His father and brother arranged a marriage for him with a woman they knew was insane just for her dowry, his friend let him marry his sister without telling him the truth, and the woman he thought he loved betrayed him with another man. He couldn't divorce his wife yet he didn't send her off to one of those awful asylums. I always found him a sympathetic character, but it's funny how your view of what's old changes the older you get.
@whatevergoesforme5129
@whatevergoesforme5129 2 жыл бұрын
@@cherylwilkinson3228 Well, you must be a very deep 14 yr old to see that when you read Jane Eyre which was written in a language that is so different from the way I was used to when I was a teen, even though the language is still English. I think I was younger than 14 when I read that book and my experience of the world was of course limited. I saw it from the eyes of Jane and your explanation about Rochester's betrayal was not revealed for the most part of the story but through his own words so for me, that revelation in the book did not make me pity him in the book when I was young. And even when he was pleading, he was doing it also for his own selfish reason so that Jane would not leave him. Timothy Dalton's interpretation showed me why Jane was struggling despite knowing being a mistress went against her Christian faith because Rochester's anguish in that scene made him so pitiful. I have never sympathized with Rochester because of his past, even when I became older. I pitied him (in this tv series) because he found someone he wanted to be happy with and he almost had her but he knew that her moral compass would not allow her to stay with him and that was why he had to hide his past from her. That anguish of losing someone you love as portrayed by TD made me see what that scene in the book was showing to the reader. Rochester said in the book that there were other women and he got tired of them. Makes me wonder if Jane as a mistress like his old flames would tire him in the end since it was her strong Christian faith, which influenced her moral stance on issues, that attracted him as well as other qualities she also had. Heathcliff was more sympathetic to me despite how cold his character was to others because I saw in the book how he was treated. Heathcliff need not explain himself like Rochester did to Jane (to make Jane understand why he would not let her go). I only pitied Rochester in the end when he became blind because he lost Jane, his sight, his mansion, his hope of being happy again. So Timothy's acting made me pity him when he was pleading for Jane to stay which I never did when I read the book for the first time. However, I still agree with Jane's decision to leave him when she finally realized being a mistress would not only make her go against her Christian faith but would also make Rochester see her as a mistress eventually, something she actually reflected on in the book when Rochester was explaining away his other women.

Timothy Dalton was born to play Byronic heroes; dark, passionate, self-destructive, possessive men, he captures their inner forceful nature masterfully without being overbearing. Watch him as Rochester and then as Heathcliff and then try to imagine a modern actor able to impart the same amount of brooding, intensity, coupled with world, weary, disinterest and you'll find it absolutely impossible.

This was a lot of fun to watch, even if I cannot wholly agree with the order of ranking. Timothy Dalton IS Rochester and embodies the character in the purest sense, physically and in personality. I've watched about 7 versions of Jane Eyre and NO ONE even comes close to Dalton's exceptional portrayal, in my opinion. Of course, he also has the advantage of being in the best adaptation of the book. Toby Stephens and Michael Fassbender are very capable, but the adaptations are still not quite as good and there should be more of an age difference between Jane and Rochester. (And why do they cast these blond actors? Rochester is tall, dark, and brooding.) William Hurt, Ciaran Hinds, George C. Scott, and Orson Welles are all formidable actors, but the films/direction/pacing/chemistry are lacking and almost laughable. To me, the final scenes are so very important and the culmination of the entire story and the Jane-Rochester relationship. In some of the lesser versions those scenes are very rushed and chopped up. Again, the 1983 version is most complete. You can even have the book on your lap and follow along. The lines are nearly word-for-word. Sorry for the long comment! We all have our favorite Rochesters and Timothy Dalton will always be the best in my book. :-)

No question. Timothy Dalton. He brought Rochester alive from Charlotte Bronte's pages. I've read comments where people complained about him beign theatricall. But for f... sake, in the book, in the era of the middle of 19th century, to our modern views, Rochester was theatrical. As was Shakespeare and so on... But this is why we love them, why they became timelessly our favorite, and Timothy 100% nailed it.

He really isn't that bad as people make him out to be. I don't have problem with criticism, yes people have the right to criticise and make their opinions but it should be done in positive manner. @@cellowali2865I have never watched his Bond movies. His James Bond was said to be more faithful to Ian Fleming's books compared to the other James Bonds because he brought realism to it the way Ian Fleming portrayed his James Bond. I felt he kinda demeaned himself at that time when he accepted that role because I already knew of him beforehand (but I have changed my mind about this role because he has accepted other roles that I have seen as beneath him, since I am kinda snobbish in a way LOL). I have always seen him as a true thespian and not a commercial actor but maybe he just wanted to widen his range. I first watched him in Lion in the Winter so my first impression of him was more of a serious actor. But when I watched Rocketeer, I found out that he could act out caricatures and has a penchant for comedy as well. I have seen him in other older films but I really don't follow him. However, he reminds me of Sir Laurence Olivier. I wish he would receive a knighthood but I believe he is kinda underrated despite his acting chops and body of work on stage because maybe the issue is people think he is too handsome to be taken seriously, but it is just my opinion.

That's how I would have ranked them. But this ranking is unfair to Ciaran Hinds since he performed in a feature-length film as opposed to a series. It was a handicap because you cannot compare a movie to a series. I believe if everything had been equal, I'd have ranked them: 1/Dalton, 2/Hinds, 3/Stephens. They were all so, so good in the part - it is hard to choose.

I fear you have it wrong but you are entitled to your own opinion. Having seen all of the versions of Jane Eyre all the Rochesters pale n comparison to Timothy dalton. He has the voice , unsurpassable acting ability, wonderful personality , can be intense and also light hearted. Most of all he has amazing good looks, although not quite compatible with the book, but we all like our heroes to be handsome and strong. Timothy to me the tops.

Not only that, it's true to why he fell in love with her in the first place. Their physical attraction to one another paled in the in comparrison to "meeting of the minds" so to speak.. He was attracted to her intellect, her quiet and introspective demeanor. The adaptation with Toby Stephens, although a passionate and wonderful love story was not the story of Jane Eyre. Especially the bedroom scene. Bronte would never have approved of that.

In my view Toby Stephens looked very handsome and young to be Mr. Rochester. Instead Timothy Dalton, despite also being handsome, has a strong personality and passion that is described of Mr. Rochester in the book, and especially if it appears to be 40 years old and also has the dimple in his chin, which is a peculiar characteristic of Rochester, which is also described in the book.

I agree with your list entirely. Jane Eyre has been my favourite book for ever and Toby Stephens manages to put on the screen the Rochester I always imagined, perfect adaptation. Dalton is good too but he's too intense, his performance to me resemble that of Heathcliff and I'm not too fond of the latter. Rochester is intense too, but there's a "tamer" (for lack of a better word) side to him that Dalton did not catch but Stephens did and with such extreme excellence. There's also the matter of the looks- Dalton is way too perfectly handsome to play Rochester. Stephens is handsome too, but not in such a blatant manner. And of course the immense chemistry between him and Ruth Wilson just makes my heart soar even more every time I watch it (and after watching this, I'll be doing so today).

I didn't feel or see any chemistry between Toby and Ruth. They behaved like long-ago married couple. I got bored after 10 min. watching. I started watching that adaptation several times but couldn't see it to the end. It doesn't arouse any feelings but irritation. Maybe its the script?

Naaah, Timothy Dalton played it right. Rochester was a passionate character since he is a Byronic hero like Heathcliff. In fact, you can see the difference of Heathcliff's passion and Rochester's passion because the latter though passionate has more refinement since Rochester is supposed to be gentleman.

According to the times (1847) he wasnt good looking. He was broad shouldered and dark like a common working man. The preferred man of the day was blond, pale and a little effeminate, more like St. John Rivers. So Timothy Dalton would not have been considered handsome by those standards.

Well, it's kinda impossible for me to choose between Dalton and Stephens. Dalton had a book-worthy adaption which is just full of so much actual dialogue from the book... I think he's a bit handsome for the role and a bit more suited to stage acting... but he brings the character to life... you can really see him as a real person and not just a trope. YOu can begin to understand what Jane sees in him. To counter him, Zelah Clarke makes a truly fairy-like Jane with a quiet air and a subtle, restrained passion and deep moral convictions. Stephens has the strong, imposing features I always attributed to Rochester, and but lacks the benefit of extensive character development. He's got the temperament down--devilish at times, brooding, stern, desperate, doting even, but he starts to feel more like a walking bag of character tropes. Ruth Wilson also makes a perfect Jane Eyre, in her appearance. There are a few parts I dislike about the modern version (most namely, the horizontal kissing session, post-failed wedding), but I do like the updated cinematography and the overall feel.
@supergran1000
@supergran1000 8 жыл бұрын
+ifonlyclanax33 "There are a few parts I dislike about the modern version (most namely, the horizontal kissing session, post-failed wedding)". I used to feel the same way as you. However, this scene is shown as a flashback - a memory. I now regard it as a fusion of Jane's selective and subjective memories at a time of trauma AND her rather erotic dreams that she has of Rochester at Morton (see chapter 32 of the book). Viewed this way, the scene as written in the 2006 mini-series is positively inspired!

Charlotte Bronte would never have had Jane and Mr. Rochester laying down in bed like that. Purely a 21st century adaptation. The height was wrong and he wasn't dark and broad shouldered as described in the book. In the book Mr. Rochester towered over Jane. That's why he called her an elf.

I have been a fan of the book for decades since I was in school, I know it by heart (I am French and I read it both in French and in English). Thanks a lot for having done this very interesting compilation/comparison. It's only a pity that you didn't compare the ends too. You should redo it with the last scene and with the 2011 version, it would be great and the fans would appreciate ! Of course everybody has an image of Jane and Rochester in his head. For me, the 1983 version with Timothy Dalton and Zelah Clarke is the most faithful to the book, and the Rochester in my head is very close to him. Seducing but not too handsome. I don't agree with people who say that Edward and Jane are ugly. Jane says to Rochester that she doesn't find him handsome, that doesn't mean he must be repulsive. He must be dark, strange and tormented, but he can be brilliant in society. He is just not handsome according to 19th century standards (as Saint John in the same film). For Jane, she is said to be "plain", not ugly either. And I find Zelah Ckarke not quite pretty enough, and mainly not passionate enough, too shy and terrified by him. I don't like the 1973, 1996 and 2011 versions. Fassbender too handsome and William Hurt not convincing. In the 1973 one, Ciaran is, on the contrary, much too old and ugly. We are in mid 19th century, not in the Middle Ages ! Remember Rochester is 20 years older than Jane, that means he is 38 at the beginning, 39 at the end ! In 1840 this is not an old man, just a mature man. I kept the best for the end : I discovered the 2006 version on KZfaq and was so enthusiastic that I bought the DVD immediately. It is simply gorgeous ! Toby and Ruth are for me the best ones, this version is unforgettable. What a talent how they play ! They are not too handsome but pleasant to be watched at for 4 hours. And the expressions of faces are genius. Sometimes very funny, sometimes tragical : great, great actors. Of course nobody imagines them like that but they are totally convincing, I adopted them immediately. That version has captured the passion which is the essence of this book. And it is the only version which makes really feel the strong, unique, special and magical link between them, which makes feel how they understand each other. Thank you again !
