It is crazy to think that people waited years and spent small fortunes on listening to certain pieces of classical music maybe two or three times in their entire lives, and that the lower classes probably never heard any at all. And yet here we are, able to listen to the entire repository of human composition with a few flicks of the finger whenever we please.

I didn't search for it, it came up as a recommended video based on my general preference for classical music. This recording deserves a thumbs down because of the positively lethargic, maybe even plodding, pace. Yeah, too many recordings are all "off to the races". But this one is a snooze fest.

Tchaikovsky's letter to a friend, regarding keep doing art and mastering disinclination. "We must always work, and a self-respecting artist must not fold his hands on the pretext that he is not in the mood. If we wait for the mood, without endeavoring to meet it halfway, we easily become indolent and apathetic. We must be patient, and believe that inspiration will come to those who can master their disinclination. A few days ago I told you I was working every day without any real inspiration. Had I given way to my disinclination, undoubtedly I should have drifted into a long period of idleness. But my patience and faith did not fail me, and today I felt the inexplicable glow of inspiration of which I told you; thanks to which I know beforehand that whatever I write today will have power to make an impression, and to touch the hearts of those who hear it."

True, so true. Don't wait for the inspiration, practice your skill even if the results are bad or uninspired (and hurt your pride). Practice so that when the inspiration finally comes you're in your prime and ready to make the best of it. I used to wait for "the mood" too, but I waited so long, my skill got worse and worse. Still struggling to get myself to where I want to be, consuming less, creating more but I think I'm on a good track. Good luck to all of you fighting the same battle :)

Easily the best orchestrator of the 19th Century. There was NOTHING he didn't know how to get an orchestra to do, and though he had a distinct style, the writing never sounded the same from piece to piece. Also, quite possibly the best melody composer I've ever heard. I can't even think of how many of his melodies are permanently engrained in the public consciousness. Tchaikovsky has a very particular place in my heart. Though I don't care for his symphonies or solo piano works, when he let his art tell a story, I swear, there were moments when my heart almost stopped from heartache. Quite simply, despite a few faults, he is and will always remain one of my favourite composers of all time.

One of the barriers re this type of music is the word...classical. Some conductors prefer to describe it as orchestral considering we have all heard it throughout our lives on film soundtracks, TV programmes, etc. My late husband was a rock musician and loved classical music so we purposely broadened our kid's music experience. My son loves 'classical'. My daughter loves jazz. Our grandson...blues music...studied all the great blues and classical harmonica players. Now, they keep me up to speed with amazing music and musicians.

Tchaikovsky...possibly the most "Russian" out of all the Russian composers. and in my opinion, the best of them all.
@LeLucky90
@LeLucky90 10 жыл бұрын
That's because he's the most famous Russian composer. It's not him that was influenced by the "Russian classical music". It's the Russian classical music that was influenced by him. When we think of that kind of music, we just expect it to sound similar to Tchaikovsky's compositions.

Krystsina M well, just because russia does not approve of someone being gay does not mean that he can't be! I believe that homosexual people are born that way and it is not a matter of decision. Everybody should feel free to be themselves no matter what is disapproved and what is not. Btw there are certain erotic letters he wrote to a another man that were found in his house that can support the fact that he was homosexual. But that doesn't matter. It's his music that we should care about.

Just listen to the Symphony 6 and tell me if it's a symphony or a requiem. He hated his life because he couldn't love who wanted, that's all. Some people are gay, get over it.
