When you are talking about a subject you know everything about you only have to worry about boring the people that aren't really interested in the first place. Really enjoy the informative videos. No such thing as too much Mauser talk. Mauser is a landmark achievement and is the best design for comparison with other bolt systems.

Boring people? I dont think you have to worry about that, as your videos include very specific and interesting aspects not seen in other places. I myself, and im sure a lot of fellow viewers would concur, would enjoy gathering even more knowledge.

I have been following a German gunstore on Egun that ships to Norway also for a little fee. They have some museum expamples of Mauser 98 and ø22s , look so good .

I bought a R8 last year, when it was a striking deal ( 2200 Canadian dollar). It is a piece of art in my opinion, only the case and packaging is enough to say it. Thanks again for a great video.~!

It's amazing, your collecting arc is much like my own. I have been collecting Mauser's for 20 years and that led me to Blaser. In many ways I think the BlaserR93/R8 is the spiritual successor to the Model 98. They are just as ground breaking as the M98 design, problem is the world hasn't yet caught on to it! I really did not know the connection between the 66 action and the SR830, but now I have no doubt the 66 influenced the early Blaser straight pulls. Maybe even some of the Mauser engineers went to Blaser in the early 80's, I am convinced! The name of the engineer at Blaser that did the R93 is Meinhard Zeh, I wonder if he started at Mauser? "The Blaser R93 displays a locking surface of 66 mm2 (0.102 in2) compared to 56 mm2 (0.087 in2) for the Mauser 98." - from wikipedia. That means almost 15% more locking surface. They are in fact much stronger. "The Blaser R8 displays a locking surface of 96 mm2 (0.149 in2) compared to 56 mm2 (0.087 in2) for the Mauser 98." That's over 40% more locking surface than an M98!!

I have a Blaser r93 and it was interesting to get some history behind it.

I am an owner of SR850/88 which was latest version of the SR rifle. I can confirm that "It is hard to describe how smooth it is" :) There are some differences between those two versions and I would like to say that the only one defect(long way from the bolt handle to the trigger) which was presented in the video was solved in further version of the rifle(or in EU version - this is which I own).

About the exploding R93 i can share something i was told by a master gunsmith. He told me there is no example of an R93 exploding on factory ammo. Every example of an R93 that failed was caused by unskilled reloaders. Particulary underloaded ammo was the cause of many explosions, with the case laying horizontal and only beeing filled half with powder the powder wasnt burning from the primer towards the bullet but it was ignited along the whole lenght of the case pretty much instantly causing a pressure spike the R93 couldnt handle. But because the R93 was so unusual people were very sceptical about its strengh and that stuck with the action. For the R8 it wasnt really neccessary to reinforce the lockup but to get rid of that stigmata of beeing weak they reinforced it by a lot anyway. The R8 is tested to 14.000bar of pressure and it didnt fail catastrophically it was just broken to the point where they had to destructively open it up and they called it done. For those that arent familliar with bar measurements a regular full power rifle cardridge sits right around 3900bars of pressure so the R8 is plenty strong you could say.

That was a fun video. I've heard of the Blaser rifles but was not really familiar with them. What a very interesting design! I agree that's got to be the strongest 22 action I've ever seen and even heard of. I don't find your historical background at all boring it's one of the reasons I'm here. I really enjoy the history of firearms and the slow building of ideas off the previous designs. It really makes you appreciate some guns more when you finally see what went into engineering them. Your collection does offer your viewers an advantage in seeing them side by side. The smoothness of those actions actually translates to video quite well. I bet they are some fine shooting pieces of hardware.

I have been to their warehouse...as a funny story i was looking for an aics stock on their website and didn't realize they don't have a show room! It was just a warehouse office...great guys there though and very accommodating. They even offered to have things shipped to that location if i was interested in seeing things in person.

Blaser’s are so weird, had an R8 come to us and having never seen one before was quite shocked when I took the magazine out and the entire trigger group came with it 😂

The Blaser SR830 indeed had the bolt handle a bit too far forward. They fixed that in the SR850, which has the bolt handle much closer to the trigger. (I've been eyeing one for a while, at the local gun store.. It's still priced a hefty 1800 euros)

USOG yet another great video. If I were to choose a rifle I'd go with original Mauser(own a couple so am partial to them) If Blaser hated the M66 design I concur. It seems like the telescoping bolt is one step too many, as it is not present in Blaser. If I were to choose a straight pull however, after seeing one of your previous videos I think it would be the Merkel Helix. It's a little out of my league but not by much, gives me something to aspire to other than cheap Mausers and CZ's

I think you would be surprised by how many of us would find it interesting also. Blazer is not really that well known nor its history. The R-8 lockup actually reminds me of a style of tool collet I seen on a Japanese CNC multi head/tool. When a tool was in the collet it had to withstand an amazing mamount of forces acting on it in different ways, at the same time. Unfortunately for me owning a Blazer rifle is not likely to happen. I have held a couple at gun shows. Fit, finish is like a very high end sports car. Perfect. The telescoping bolt has interested me from the first Uzi I helped clean. It took me a minute to understand how the components interacted when firing. A bit fascinating in itself. Anyway, thanks for explanation on the operation of the Blazer action.

Blaser lugs locks directly on the barrel. This is a ruge advantage for inherit accuracy.

Was wondering if you were lucky to find those with the beautiful stocks on the rifle already? Blaser is very popular here in Germany. I think the reason for that is not so much the exceptional engineering but the marketing they do. I have the R8 and did hunt a lot with it. Action is super smooth as you describe it and the manual cocking is a vital safety feature especially when stalking. But: they are totally overpriced compared to what they actually provide. It's a lot of plastic pieces which I don't necessarily like. Since I could get my self a Steelaction the Blaser stays in the cabinet most of the time. Action is way more simple the the Blaser's, it is all steel except the feeding piece in the magazine, it has picatinny rails milled on the receiver which allows you to buy cheaper scope mounts, it comes with 2 five round magazins and it costs 1.200€ less then the Blaser. Furthermore the hand cocking lever is operating without making any noise but that may be my thumb also. Still, the R8 is an excellent rifle but there's other around also at much more reasonable prices.

Euro gun companies have had some great innovations over the years. One could suggest over engineered in the case of the Blasers, but once you use them you see that is not really a valid criticism. They are just perfectly engineered. The Mauser M12 (a Blaser product) is a great balance between good engineering and over engineering in my opinion.

Very surprised to see that the r93 had a rimfire barrel as I am a bit of a rimfire nut. Always a pleasure to see one of your videos appear on my feed. Since you did a video on falling blocks a while back, I guess I'll sate my curiosity, do you have any experience with the Haenel rimfire falling block rifle? I managed to score one a while back, extremely fine piece of German engineering that I figured would be interesting to you as a collector from a technical standpoint.

I don’t think Mauser could go wrong making 98s again. A of mine has two rifles with 98 actions, I offered to buy them just for the actions but he wouldn’t sell. He did sell my son his Garand though.

Hello, one question, Do you think r93 has security problemas? In Madrid (spain) there was an accident with one R93 in 2001, and it seems that R98 was made with s safe action and that is why the bolt angle is more straight. I'm a tad late to this video but.... at the start of Feb this year I picked up a Mauser M96 American in 30-06. These would not be common here in Ireland but are not unheard of in the UK. I have come across several references in Australia and New Zealand. I was attracted to it on three points: 1st: the calibre, I was looking for something for my deer shooting and a chance at driven boar and the 06 suited my taste. 2nd: the combination of Mauser and the fact it was a straight pull (even with its odd design) was a big plus. 3rd: I had in fact hunted with the M96 before on driven boar days (unsuccessfuly mind you) in France, so I knew the gun first hand. This model as far as I can determine is pre Blazer / Mauser days and may be the innovation influence of Rheinmatel when they had Mauser. When this arrangement finished the Blazer influence and design won out and the M98 fell out of production with in a few short years. Their is some thought, as in the name, that it was orginaly destined for the US market but it failed to make head way there and that was that. Of the original design there are 3 models, 1 in stainless steel, 1 Deluxe and 1 standard. My French friend has a deluxe model with detachable magazine in the classic mauser 7mm and no iron sights. Mine has a blind 4/5 shot magazine and no open sights (factory finish) with deep bluing and walnut stock. There is a 3 stage tang safety similar to modem Styer bolt actions. Orginal models came complete with quick release sling swivels and I suspect common scope mounts. The action is drilled and tapped as for Remington 700 and therefore accepts various styles of scope mounting systems. As above models came complete with or without iron sights, with express style sights weekly the norm. They come in various calibres and actions both long and short as you would expect in a modern hunting rifle. They are touted as a light rifle and certainly with out optics they are not a heavy firearm. The design is bulky and not slim as you may come across in mountain rifles but they are very pointable, like a shotgun and shooting 180gr SP is not noticeable or and issue. Trigger (non adjustable) pull is known to be heavy at around 5Lb but again it's not an issue when shooting. The straight pull bolt locks by 16 lugs and some describe it as a bolt action 'Stoner' after the M16. It is interesting that the whole bolt and cocking lever etc must be completely in battery for it to fire, an added safety feature weather by design or fault. The forward position of the cocking lever is strange to look at but even with my barrel chest and short arms works very well and is smooth and fast. Accuracy is good and managed to obtain 1inch groups and less with 128gr FMJ and 180gr SP. My rifle is threaded for a moderator and I run a Wildcat Preditor (reflex) on it, balance is acceptable but I don't plan sporting it for driven hunts. It was fitted with a 20MOA rail when at the time of purchase but mated with my 8x56 Schmidt & Bender classic it shoots to high to be effective. I am in the process of fitting two piece Warne rails mated with QD rings so that I can replace the 8x56 with a red dot for driven hunts. If you fancy something similar but from Rosler (Germany) have more or less relaunched the rifle as the Titan16 straight pull, this time there are a multitude of options including switch out barrels but no blind magazine. It would be nice to know if parts where interchangable as orginal parts for the American are drying up. Anyone looking for a owners manual drop me a message and I'll email you a digital one. Unfortunately deer season ends here on the last day of February so unless I get an out of season licence for culling I'll have to blood it on foxs once I've the scope mounted again.

The slickest, most easily operated Bolt Action (Target) Rifle-in your opinion-would be the...Blaser? The Merkel? The Anschutz Fortner? An Izhmash Model 7-2? Could you please, possibly compare the Fortner to the Izhmash 7-2, in 22lr? I’m very curious to know what YOUR OPINION IS. A Blaser in 22lr? I might be wrong, but it doesn’t look all that smooth?! Blaser makes nice rifles but they take a fortune for them. Have you got a Brenner BR18? And what do you think about the new Mauser 18 the "Volksgewehr". Do you also compare the abilities of the rifles you got? Do you take them to the range and compare their accuracy? Or do you only look at rifles in a technical way?

You forgot the Sr 830/88 is the middle on and has bolt forward cooking

120 years in the future since the Mauser 98 and we have a few gun guns that could challenge for the better rifle status in terms of bolt action rifles................. Just the fact that the Mauser 98 is as it does the job over and over even after 120 years it still gets my rewards,there is nothing better then Mauser 98 for what it did..120 years back in ww2 even it was on the nazi side it was a awesome design that holds up in 2018 without a problem vs competion who bring out........but a 100% better design i havent seen so far in the bolt action guns. But i like older guns and there designs......................( I love John Browing guns cause there are simple and easy vs the german guns who do the same like the MG42 or luger pistols) The gewehr 98 is a relative simple but super design i love it for its strenght and cause the fact it never fails it just alwasy does the job.

Between the SR30 and the R8 I doubt there's anything that even comes close to bolt design innovation or lock up pressure tolerances... Sure there's faster actions like the Helix/Maral, even the Mauser96/Roessler Titan 16 but they just aren't as solid.

I am quite surprised! 1.) You name the video "...Blaser Evolution..." and talk more than half of the time about other gun munufacturers. 2.) You skipped the SR 850 which is an important step from the SR830 to the R93 and R8 3.) Particularily not a single word about the extraordinary safety installations of the SR850 which is even better than the later models R93 and R8 as they are immediately unlocked after repeating the second shot once you have unlocked the gun. The SR850 has to be unlocked after every single shot as the gun locks itself automatically when you are repeating 4.) Where are the evaluation of the next steps of Blaser Evolution with the R93 and the R8 which were big steps again? All over all I have to say incomplete and somehow superfluous! Very sad!
