In fact, because of the pandemic that started this decade, the old theater recorded bootleg releases trend probably reached a decline for the first time particularly in Asia (where the pandemic was spreading rapidly) due to some films also being released on streaming early during their theatrical run.

For a couple months now, I’ve started to get an interest watching clips of bootleg theater recordings (especially the ones that were on VHS because they were made around the time when the internet wasn’t something very common). Even tho it’s illegal, it’s a nice time to hear the audience’s reaction to certain scenes or some goofs that happened in these tapes.

@@RB01.10 I guess it was! Or maybe I'm misremembering and it was an ad for that movie, but I remember the film burning and stopping. They ended up feeding the film through until it started spinning again, iirc. We had to wait like 20 minutes.

0:48 If you don’t understand what’s happening in this video, the film is destroying itself. Films back in the day were made of a celluloid which can be pretty flammable. And you need a lamp to show the film.

However, acetate and polyester film usually doesn't melt unless it's not working properly, or anyone bumped the projector, which can make this happen. Nitrate films, on the other hand, are rarely used anymore becuz they're flammable and can cause a big fire. They also can be destroyed and burnt easily, thus this is why a lot of silent and nitrate sound films are lost. That movie must be in safety polyester (or acetate if it's a different compound used) film, so that means it's not easily flammable, but it can still melt if heated too much or not working properly.

A Dreamcast commercial interruption

The bootlegger probably used a VHS tape that already had that Dreamcast commercial on it, then tried taping over it with their Iron Giant recording. Either it didn't perfectly overwrite or they briefly stopped recording the movie; in either case, the tape flipped back over to the commercial that was originally on that part of the reel. That's my guess, at least.
