Otters were hunted so exhaustively, not only because of their rich fur, but because they ate abalone, a type of shellfish that humans also love to eat. However, when removed from an area the abalone population dropped like a rock. Right, ecology connections. Turns out there's another predator of abalones that the sea otter were also eating and keeping in check. With otters gone, their population boomed.

Are the eggs always cooked or do they ever eat them raw?
