Great video! Midas MR18! My favorite. 😊 Good quality small mixer and interface with 16 pro preamps, earphone output, 6 aux outputs and 2 main left and right output. A little pricey but your band will enjoy the quality, well worth it!

The MR-18 has been a game changer for me for live shows. Definitely realized after buying it that it could easily replace our studio interface too.

Great video Ryan. You didn't mention one of the things I miss most about the StudioLive mixer I used to have which is the Capture software for recording shows. That is absolute brilliance and I wish I could get something like it for other systems. As an alternative, I wound up with a SoundCraft Ui24r rackmount (2 units high) which has 20 mic pre's, 2 RCA in, 8 outs, can record all tracks to the USB output as well as to a USB memory stick (at the same time - but it has to be a very high speed USB 3 stick) as well as being run without software - any computer that does HTML 5 can run the web based mixer via wifi and it also supports its own screen, keyboard and moust if you want to mix right on the machine. But I usually run it via Ethernet cable from a position way off stage and use the Ui24r as a stagebox. It also has fantasic sounding Studer designed mic pre's. I have also used the Behringer X-32 rackmount as well as the AR16 - both sound good but not as nice as the Ui24r and both need dedicated software like the Presonus.

I hear some of those Soundcrafts are pretty good. I was on an Si Performer just last night and it sounded dang good. I definitely should have mentioned the Capture software. Definitely a big reason to buy StudioLive. I think another reason is the iPad software. The ViSi app and setup was just confusing, and I couldn’t quite get bi-directional control in the limited amount of time I had. The UC Surface app just works as long as you’re on the same network. No dealing with HiQ Net numbers or TCP/UDP settings in routers. In addition to the 16R, I do have a 32R that has been awesome. In my experience, I think the StudioLive mixers sound…just okay. It’s their AD conversion I like. Every recording I’ve done has sounded amazing! So I keep using them. Thanks for the comment!

I for one have used the behringer XR18, the X32 Rack, and the Midas MR18. I believe that the XR18 or its sister console the MR18 would give you much better software, functionality, and better sounding mic pres in my opinion. Cool thing about the XR18 is that you can still use the X32 edit software (for Mac and PC) on the console giving you a fully functional control surface (head and shoulders above the Presonus software). I have even seen people run X32 edit live with a touchscreen monitor hardwired over Ethernet to the console. There is also the Midas MR18 which is essentially the same console as the XR18, it just has the upgraded “Midas Pro” Preamps, and it actually has locking connectors (the XR18 does not). I absolutely LOVE that the Presonus Rack mixer can also just be an external stagebox, I just think that the software interface that you interact with on the daily is kind of lacking. If they improved the software and DSP functions of the console rack I would 100% be sold! Short answer, yes I agree with the premise of the video that you should not use a typical audio interface if you are a band, I just wouldn’t go with the Presonus offerings in a small band use case. They are just too pricy when compared with Music Tribe Group’s offerings in this use case for what they are. They would only make sense if you intend to buy a fully functioned FOH console in the future that being a StudioLive console.

To be clear… “ Music Tribe”= Behringer…. behringer is the company that ( among other philosophies) makes a lot it’s income by copying ( knock off) other audio hardware… do the research…. A LOT of audio companies have sued Berry. I will by Presonus or Focusrite USED before I will by Berry… Or… I have bought Berry DIRT CHEAP USED… BUT WHEN I buy in a manner that benefits a company… I chose to spend a little more and support companies that ( at least PRETEND to) follow a moral and ethical path.

Hi Ryan, thanks for the insight- I was already eyeballing the 18i20. Now I am understanding the presonus is a great piece of equipment, but I am also kinda keen on the Behringer XR 18 since it has the wireless option on board. FOH could not be easier if I understand correctly. Have you tried a product of the XR line from Behringer? Any thoughts, impressions or experiences you want to share? Cheers for your video, it is exactly what I was looking for!

featurewise the SD card recorder of the XR18 is multitracking all tracks - not just stereo l/r as the Presonus or none at all as the Scarletts. I'd imagine that will make life a lot easier in most setups to avoid running a laptop to record all tracks. A bit surprised Ryan didn't comment on that difference (sorry if I missed it). There are some physical front-ends to the XR series as well, not sure if that's the case for other brands. I'm not sure why you would choose a device that isn't capable as both mixer, multitrack recorder and interface but isn't aware of the tech details in that part of the market anyway so yeah, JM2C

Does anyone know how to fix this: so Basically I have an Olympus WS- 853 digital voice recorder, which I use for meetings and regular stuff, (although it's not as good as I thought it was despite being £85), I once recorded rain sound with it while outside just by using the handheld recorder alone but the noise capture was not the best of quality and the wind seemed to really mess up with the sound too. Does anyone have any suggestions for external microphones or other cheap but really good bits of equipment I could buy to fix the wind and quality problem especially when recording outside noise. If so I would really appreciate it 💛 if you could give full names of recommended products or equipment, or full details in advice. Thank you!

Correct me if I'm wrong but one thing these lack is midi capability over usb, so you cannot use them to play software instruments in your DAW like you can with traditional usb audio interfaces. Is that right?

Hi Ryan. Thanx for the review. Did you know that the 16R now has 24x24 in interface mode? This gives you an acceleration in the home studio with 3 extra separate stereo out mixes! Presonus didn't paid much attention to this update, but to me it is great!

Would something like the Presonus StudioLive 16R or Midas MR18 be a better choice for a single person virtual training setup than a RodeCaster Pro and Cloudlifter for an SM7B feeding into my ATEM Mini? I don't intend to use the mixer for anything other than my home setup, and I don't currently do any musical performance work. One advantage of a stage box style mixer is I can avoid taking up desk space with it and can control it with an app on my MacBook or iPad. A disadvantage other than price is the additional learning curve and lack of tutorial videos from all the podcaster folks. (A RodeCaster Pro with an ATEM Mini is a well trodden path.) I'm wondering if the right professional gear will also give a noticeably cleaner audio of my voice with much better preamps. Any thoughts or additional insight? This will be my first venture into professional audio equipment. I have done a lot of research but lack hands-on knowledge.
@everythingisopen
@everythingisopen 2 жыл бұрын
For such a setup they are both a bit oversized in channel count and perhaps features as well. The same preamps or others of similar quality are in smaller (and cheaper) devices, I can't imagine any of them making a huge difference for the audience (if the content is relevant and interesting they'll listen to any audio quality). The learning curve is hard to assess beforehand, better off ordering something and try it out for a few weeks first and see if you can find a helpful online community somewhere to get started. If the desk space pref isn't critical check out Behringer Flow as well or even one of the USB mics with interface built in, like Zoom H2n, H4n, etc.

The only gripe with this is that if you're playing live, and you're using tracks with the built-in interface, you run the risk of failure if the unit goes down for whatever reason. This is not ideal in that situation and as such, you need a separate interface for tracks.

the S3 biggest issue is Presonus don't test the firmware enough. They've rolled out firmware several times that hard crash the console. They also back pedalled super hard on adding insert fx - they 100% through there hardware had more hoarse power than it had and as a result they never delivered on adding anything to the channel strip insert that's actually worth having.

Hi could you explain how you run your headphone mixes?
@RyanKnowsNothing
@RyanKnowsNothing 2 жыл бұрын
On the back there are 6 balanced 1/4 inch outs. They can be mono for up to six headphone mixes, or stereo linked for up to three. This is a line out so they have to either go to an IEM system or a headphone amp, something like this Samson QH4: amzn.to/3SeqDjX This way you can then do your headphone mixes through the GUI for the mixer. Hopefully that helps.

The “only” problem with the Ui’s. qny of them is the reliability. they more than often stop working. They overheat quit a lot, if you don’t use the absolute recomended Monitor you loose control of the board. You really get what you pay for. Even Behringer, who have a not so good reputation for reliability runs laps on Ui’s on this. If you can’t afford a x32 of a Presonus, just buy a Behringer XAir. By the way, I’m talking from experience having used both. Ui and XAir

Look at the Ui24R again-it is a redesign that addressed the problems with the Ui12 and Ui16. The Ui24 runs on an old iPad 2 I have (and couldn’t just throw away). You can plug a touchscreen HDMI into it and run it that way! Wish the amp modelers would do that-imagine not having to awkwardly bend down or boot up a full computer. It can handle stereo IEMs for a whole band. If it is going to be stuffed into a rack, I would install a fan (easy to do-not sure why it wasn’t installed in the first place). I was looking at Behringer/Midas, but they have been backordered for a long time, so the UI24 is worth a second look on its own merits.
