It's humor guys, don't get your panties in a bunch. Some commercial pilots are armed (trained thru a separate federal course), and Air Marshall's are armed, but neither will tell you. That would defeat MUCH of the purpose.

I'm a retired federal agent, and toward the end of my career 2010, I was surprised how often I was on flights where the pilots were armed. (everybody who is armed on a flight, is told the name and location of everybody else who is armed on a flight).

Those of you who fear pilots with guns... they are guiding a humongous projectile loaded with hundreds of pounds of fuel 30,000 ft. above the ground... and you think the guns are a problem? (Not that I'm doubting that they can fly, but use some logic here).

"Theres no way a 22 can do that" Generally, no -- but it depends greatly on what type of .22 ammo and what level of vest you're talking about. The regular junk ammo on the shelf is one thing, but there are some seriously tough .22 loads available, and .22 WMR (.22 magnum) will certainly go through Level I & II armor with the right ammo at close range. Level III -- maybe not, but could probably be modified to do so by sharpening the usual blunt bullet.

Just so you know if a weapon was fired in the plane and it went through the side of the plane nothing would happen. It would just slowly lose pressure. And that wouldn't be a problem. You folks that think it would have some sort of explosive decompression watch to many movies.

50 years old and still waiting for that situation. Funny thing is, if I had access to a gun I might have shot my father who was a serious disciplinarian or my mother who wished she never had children or commit the mass murder I fantasized about with an entire school finding it hilarious to tease me to a point of a nervous breakdown. Maybe I might have taken a gun to work to shoot the bosses that called me brainless or asshole while I was trying desperately to pay of a deep debt that I got myself into. I might have even blown my own brains out due to the number of times that I thought that life was unbearably hard. Now I am just relatively well adjusted and a happy go lucky guy who has made peace with his parents, accepts the immaturity and thoughtlessness of the children that did not understand what I was going through and have my own business due to perseverance and discipline and am still grateful I never had a gun at my disposal. Here's a kicker; if American's where not so indoctrinated and flushed with the easy access to guns, maybe disenfranchised kids and young adults would find other ways to resolve their issues. As for guns, I think we create what we fear. Funny pilot skit though, but measures are in place that should negate the necessity to have a gun up there. It's called work smarter, not harder.

As that is a common myth, one hole would not rapidly decompress the cabin. It would have to be several shots, or a large rupture in the aircraft's fuselage.

@upiluften Aloha 243's fuselage was found to be in poor condition which possibly contributed to the rupture. That also was a isolated incident on a old design. So how does that compare with a small bullet hole through the side again?

That's a good question, if the bullet just punctures the cabin, it will leave a small hole and the pressurizing system will compensate for the small change in pressure. This can happen for quite a few bullets and still be sustained. BUT if a bullet blows out a window then the cabin depressurizes quickly and stuff starts to fly out as expected. ....something Uncle Dean might have said while he was a commercial pilot, but the first rule in his book was, "Don't Tell Anyone You Are Armed !" unless, of course, the situation warrants it ! ! !. He litterally hauled a lot of mail in the 50s-90's and revelled in the freedom to carry that the law allowed.
