Listen to this guy! He's 100% ... no 101% right on what he says here. I play drums since 1999 ... at the beginning i was a joke of a drummer and could not care less about development. Then i started taking things step by step. so #1, #2 and #5 should be the holy trinity if you want to play drums right! It hurts mentally and physically but after few weeks/months, just like in the gym training, you will want to do more and feel happy when doing it! Great video Rob! I was following exactly this steps that you described here over the years! And it works! I am not a great drummer but I am not a lousy one either! Cheers!

I have been a long time subscriber to Rob's channel. He has helped no doubt thousands of drummers around the world with his insight and generosity of his time and knowledge. Many many years ago this information would have been virtually impossible to procure. I feel that his success is from his own volition. I am an ardent purveyor of his doctrines and it truly has helped me immensely. Maybe the community needs to pay him back and let's all buy some merchandise from his store. It's people like Rob who actually gives people hope, confidence and can save lives with music.

This is the perfect video for a new drummer! I just started playing a few months ago, and am constantly overwhelmed with how long to be practicing what. Breaking it down by the week makes so much more sense rather than trying to approach each day as something new. The only other tip I would add is to have a practice journal! Write down what you're planning to do and a short reflection on what you noticed can help influence future things to work on. It also has helped me organize my thoughts on what all I need to work on.

Hands make all the difference. Learning different rhythmic phrasings using combos of singles, doubles, and triplet rudiments make for endless ideas. Learn those flam rudiments, too. Being fluid with flam accents, taps, inverts, swiss triplets, and even more weirdo rudiments, like tuchadas, will help dramatically with things like stick control and ghost-notes.

About 3 months ago, I decided I had had enough of watching what my wife liked (& I didn’t) and went upstairs to watch other programs. I also decided to do what a number of drum tutors recommended (but my wife hated) I started doing work on my drum practise pad while watching TV. In that time I have put in at least an hour on the drum pad while watching 2 hours of tv 4-5 times per week for some 3 months. My hand and finger skills and control have improved 200%. My double strokes are better (more even) and faster. And having set myself a task of increasing my single strokes speed from 120ish, I am now up to 224bpm. I completely endorse Rob’s words about time spent is the goal to improvement & useful time can be practise time on a practise pad whilst watching TV.

Said it before. Really appreciate your channel! Very helpful advice. At the moment, I am working on my drumming and also learning guitar. Often times, if I start working on guitar first, I'll often find myself practicing most of the day away (not a bad thing at all, in itself) but feeling too creatively / intellectually drained to really sit down and even put the effort in to play even a basic beat somewhat seriously. I'll often feel like I've neglected drum practice / 'missed out' when this happens. I'm left feeling a little guilty. Should this really be a concern? Or can I enjoy my practice in the knowledge that things like timing etc will help with both instruments in the long run? (For example, I imagine having a good understanding of timing on the guitar and timing on the drums could potentially help with 'clicking in with' other band members at a later date?)

Hey I know this video is a bit old but I had 2 questions when you said for the first 3 years you played to music only does that mean you just played what felt right or you covered them and played exactly what’s on the record. Last question what drum pad were you using in this video I want to find a nice one that’s not to loud like that
