As an EMT and veterinarian, I can attest for the need to, on occasion, be able to take care of yourself! My friend drives her tractor trailer long haul and is away from the house sometimes for months at a time. I knew during the pandemic that she could expect NO HELP while on the road. So, I packed her a "break glass" kit in the event she contracted the disease. Luckily when she did come down with all the symptoms, she had the kit and was able to feel better within hours with the medication I supplied. She never missed a day of work, and of course, was isolated in the cab of her truck. The kit that was presented above is a great idea and I can recommend the concept! I have my own antibiotic preference and would benefit from having one since I no longer have an active practice to be able to supply myself. It's great to know that such a service exists. THANKS!!!

Good Morning, Kathleen. Thank you for taking the time to jump into the comments and sharing your experience and expertise. It's rare to find this kind of transparency from the medical profession these days. If you have time, I am curious what your "break glass" kit included?

I appreciate the kind note. I try to approach prepping in a practical way. There seems to be a negative stigma and often times prepping is linked with only the end of a civilized society. There are plenty of real-world scenarios that occur daily that benefit from advance planning and preparation. I'll keep it up. Have a wonderful day.

You are very welcome. I know this is a bit of a departure from what I have normally been discussing on the channel over the last year. I wanted to get this information out given those two examples I shared where we self treated. Personally, I feel more comfortable with the doctor-prescribed prescriptions compared to what we have done in the past. Like I said, it's a little extra insurance and peace of mind. Take care!

I am also looking forward to a future membership or subscription service as it will make it easier to stay well stocked with a fresh supply without being inconvenienced with annual calendar reminders. I was once saved but having meds on hand so I am sold. there is some concern with over use of antibiotics but a good amount of that is prescribed by doctors so having a Doc in the loop is no guarantee.

You are right about that. I am actually working on a very slim kit that draws from the antibiotics/medicines in this kit that is suitable for backpacking. It will be a fraction of the size and weight and just include what is really needed for single treatments for one individual and for only the likely infections that would need to be treated while in the backcountry. Thanks for the comment.

Fascinating. Probably not something that would be available in Canada or could be accessed. But who knows, maybe. By the way, never trust a man who wears a belt and suspenders at the same time. LoL It's interesting that you mention fish antibiotics. A friend in California was on a training ops and By a strange set of circumstances he was bitten by a dog. He sought medical attention when back in civilization. Oddly, the attending doc wouldn't prescribe antibiotics. So my cohort did some research and discovered that fish antibiotics were easily accessible. This is what he went with. I've done my own research for sick animals and found that animal vitamins are no different than human vitamins. It stands to reason that animal antibiotics are no different. I like this kit. I've never seen such a thing available to the public. I'd be interested to know the shelf life of the kit reviewed.
@TheTechPrepper
@TheTechPrepper Жыл бұрын
If you're a neighbor from up North, take a look at their FAQ section regarding availability in Canada. I heard that "belt and suspenders" line decades ago. I love using it when I can as that's how I do things. ;-) I tried to avoid the fish antibiotics in this video, but we have successfully used them. When we did our research, we specifically searched for fish antibiotics that were produced in reputable labs that make both human and fish antibiotics. In our case, the ones we found look to be identical to the ones marketed towards humans. Isn't it strange the fish antibiotics come in pill form and in 250mg and 500mg quantities? My prescribed medications in this kit have a "use by date" of 1-year from the date that the prescription was filled. I've heard that you can use these beyond the use by date, but that the potency drops off. I would feel comfortable (personally) using them 6-months pass this date and probably keep them for a year afterwards. Again, I am not a medical professional. My niece who is a nurse told me that we ship our expired medication in the U.S. to third world countries, so I assume they are still getting value. I would love any other feedback from those in the healthcare profession?

Been there with the fish antibiotics haha. The rare instances I go to the doctor it’s for stitches, steroids, or antibiotics. Antibiotics is the hardest to come by. Never heard of a kit like this and great to hear the HSA may cover it. I’ll be getting two. Oh and not a doctor but if the half life of the medication passes, just double the dosage.

Ditto. There are certain things, as you mentioned, that require an actual visit. Enjoy your kits. Keep in mind that there are multiple treatments per antibiotics in this kit, but if you need two kits, go for it! You can trade it for gold if stuff goes sideways. Cheers!

Be sure to find out the quantity of meds you are getting for your money. Contingency Medical web site states for example azthromycin 500mg. That is a dosage unit. A basic z-pack (cycle) is 3 500 mg tabs or 6 250 mg tabs . jase medical is upfront about their product and the process is quick and easy. Best of luck to you.

Agree with the reply below. Its not a horrible kit but if you are doing side by side comparisons, Jase Medical's kit includes WAY more pills. Their doxycycline is like 5 times more pills. Also, the types of medications are also more useful on a wider variety of bacterial illnesses in the jase kit. (Paramedic here)

My 4 years expired z-pack cleared up my sinus infection early this year in a couple of days. Most of these meds will last past the expiration but lose potency. I’d just check if any get toxic over time. *not med advice

So, the real question is, what is the *real* expiration date of the antibiotics? How long until the efficacy rate drops to the point where you might as well throw it away? At $50 or so a prescription, it’s seems like a lot to me, but I understand it’s a proactive solution so I guess there’s a use case.
@TheTechPrepper
@TheTechPrepper Жыл бұрын
I filmed multiple takes and failed to include a portion where I talked about multiple treatments. Most of the antibiotics and medications in this kit, as well as the other kits, cover multiple treatments, so the cost is actually lower if you do the math. As for the question on "shelf life", it would be nice if some medical professionals can jump in here and touch on the "real" expiration date. I've heard that the potency drops over time, but what does that really mean? It feels like 6 months past would still be safe? How far out before you should toss them?
@wjf213

The military along with the FDA did a study on the REAL shelf life of meds, because the military said they're throwing away 10's of millions of dollars every year in expired meds. It's called SLEP...Shelf Life Extension Program, and they found that most meds last YEARS past their exp. dates, except for a few, but the FDA won't let the info get out. Here, Patriot Nurse did a video on this years ago, and shares what she found out. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ps5gf9er09moeGw.html

@@TheTechPrepper The two books are a must to have around. Whether they are in a bag is debatable. A cheat card [booklet supplied] for those unfamiliar are a must to treat with antibiotics. As we do not travel over a 120 miles or so at most our kit will be different than a "jet setter" as example. Everyone's training/background is different...situations are different. As typical, kits/bags are layered as far as supplies with redundancy for certain items. It sounds like there are a few things other than antibiotics [ABX]. Having Benadryl and Loperamide are a must, as are a glucose product [others may need if diabetic], the usual pain/fever relievers of choice, Pepto-bismol tablets, and any personal meds. Beyond that my kit probably has more than most folks due to my background/training. As we would only "bug out" here, my largest medical stash is in a separate area of the home with references/texts [others might have to treat me] and all the way to some surgical equipment and stove-top autoclave. Oh, I also would suggest at least some sutures, needle drivers and way to disinfect, or other wound closure devices. There are some nifty products these days [Amazon].

The kit is pricey, so it's good to have alternate options. It should be noted that most medications and antibiotics in this kit cover multiple treatments, so the cost is actually pretty reasonable given the number of treatments.
