This tank is a perfect size! I filled mine up and it lasted well over a year for me. I didn’t cook often or full time but easy enough to find a fill station if you do run out.

I had a vanagon and had that tank installed. Love your pronunciation 🤣 it’s “van-a-gin” with a hard “g”. That van was so great but no power so I sold for a PM. Really cool that the tank could be used in the new one. I was always a little nervous driving around with that tank though with crazy CA drivers. 🤣 Got my Westfalia in Orange County also. Love your videos!

We did the typical huge propane tank in our van and it actually does fit very nicely between the spare and the rear axle, albeit with like 1-2mm of clearance between the outside edge of the spare and the kick plate of the tank. The spare actually serves as another point of protection for the valves. In 2 years we have never had a single issue. That said it was a bit of a project to cut and weld the brackets. We had a machinist friend at our disposal so it was easier than most probably suffer through. I will say we use our propane for heat as well as cooking and hot water and since we camp mostly in New England during the winter, I have zero regrets about the larger tank. It gets us weeks of all-day use. Your recommendation is perfect for your use-case though. I would consider it if we were building a new van for sure.

yeh i agree if you are using it for heat, you need the larger one.

My van has a similar but larger tank installed underneath and they used flex hose vs rigid copper. Seems like that would be easier to work with...
@BuildingVanLife
@BuildingVanLife Жыл бұрын
easier to work with, yes, but it's not considered proper. Flexible lines should generally only be used from the valve to an appliance no longer than 3 feet in length. Most likely it wont be a problem, but that is the general rules with gas.
@RustyCas999
@RustyCas999 Жыл бұрын
To be ISO compliant, copper is required from the tank to the appliances, as he says. There should also be a pressure test done to assure the system is free of leaks. Greg Virgoe covers this very thoroughly on his channel. A propane detector in your living space is also a good idea.

nice work, so I'm assuming you're not going underneath to shut the valve on/off everytime you use it and are probably using on/off valves located inside the vehicle. So if it's always open like that underneath, is it not a hazard if it get's hit by a rock or something, creating sparks, while driving...

@@BuildingVanLife that's exactly the point, you want to LIVE and not blow up. There must be a way to install a remote shut off for that main valve.. I'm not trying to be a dick, I'd like to have mine pass inspection and I know that would get called out.. love the concept of underneath though to free up all that space.

Looks awesome. Thanks for the video. Is there concern about vibration causing the tie downs rubbing through the lines over time, or do they have a rubber material on the hose side? Edit...Good job showing the leak check. A lot of people assume everyone will think about that (not true🤣)👍 Thanks again 👍

I would be concerned about 3/8 copper lines going through the deck, which is metal. I would use something to shield copper from decking to prevent rubbing hole in copper line over time.

Did you have to relocate the parking brake lines? My 2020 they run right down the center, I think your van is newer, so maybe they're in another location?

@TheScalawag

Also for the remote fill - we mounted in the extended section rear of the rear wheel well and actually used riv-nuts up into the van frame for this. We then had to use metal spacers on top of longer stainless bolts to offset the bracket from the pinch weld. Works great after many years.

maybe cover the copper from those pesky theifs who cut live lines. you could use something like a flexable metal linned hose and a T. i would add a visable guage in the van off one of your branch lines to reconize leaks.
