Matching the electronics with this speaker is important , it is a very high quality speaker that scales like high end should . I discovered a great match with the Mitchi x5 integrated 350 watts per channel into 4 ohms and the Meridian 808 v6 cd/pre , not inexpensive companions but not silly money .The speaker /amp combination betters the Meridian dsp 8000se I have since sold and now combined with a Rel T7i sub woofer filling in the bottom octave and Chord signature cables I am very happy indeed.

The MTM configuration does have a tighter and more focussed soundstage. There was a paper by Joe D’appolito that was published in the mid 80s (85 maybe) on the cylindrical sound wave that MTMs present. This can be both good and bad. The sweet spot is narrower than WMT but is very tight in this narrow area. I built 3 MTMs in the 80s. One using Peerless TP165R woofers and a KO10DT tweeter and a second one using a pair of Focal 8N515 and a Morel MDT33 tweeter and a third using ScanSpeak 18W8546 woofers and a 9900 Revelator tweeter. All had this tighter but more focussed soundstage I refer to above. Karl Heinz Fink who has designed the Concept series for Q Acoustics is an awesome designer aside from being a very generous person. Please try to find his Faktor 2 and Faktor 7 from his ALR Jordan days (early-mid 90s).

I must add that the Concept 500 like most other speakers in its price range are expensive not so much because of the cost of the drivers or the crossover components but because the cabinets are beautiful and the handiwork required to make these cabinets is expensive. What you buy when you purchase loudspeakers in the $5000+ price range is superb cabinetry, impeccable Poly-urethane finish, and very good drivers. If you have the carpentry skills to do the wood work you can often build an equivalent system for about half the cost. Keep in mind that even small boutique manufacturers get drivers for about 30-35% of the retail price (that you see on Madisound). If they did not get this discount these speakers would be maybe $1000/pr more expensive Let’s assume the 500s retail for $6000. The direct cost when they leave the factory needs to be around $2500. This leaves profit for the manufacturer, and covers cost for distributor and dealer. The retail cost of the drivers required would be say $1000 add crossover and other hardware and it’s around $2000. The manufacturer pays maybe $700-800 for the same. The cost of the cabinets with all the hard work that goes in would be around $1500. So direct costs are about $2200-2300. The rest is all the profit, overheads etc. If you were to make these (assuming you have the design and carpentry skills) you would pay $2000 for the drivers, crossovers and hardware and maybe another $1000 for the cabinets plus all your own elbow grease. So your cost is $3000.

Hi Thomas, thank you very good video. I do have a question. Which amp do you like with the focal? Also on previous video you talk about cables. I had my first experience that cables do matter. I got new speaker cables just to try. I immediately noticed that they added more meat in the bone. When you described bright or warmer sounding cable you were right. These cable took some of the edge off and added more meat to the bone. I had straight wire symphony and tried SKW from amazon. I know what was I thinking but so far I really like them and for the price..WOW

@@ThomasAndStereo Let's say you usually eat lunch out five days a week instead of eating Ramen. The average cost of the lunch out is $14. The Ramen, on the other hand, is about 13-25 cents, but it's not very nutritious. Let's say you add 75 cents worth of veggies to the Ramen to avoid death by lack of nutrition and drink tap water for a cost of $1 per lunch... a savings of $13 per day, $65 per week, and $3250 per year (50 weeks... 2 weeks of vacation during which you overeat in the Bahamas.) So to purchase these speakers you have to eat the $1 Ramen lunch for about 1.8 years, which is roughly 460 Ramen Lunches!

Your room is well treated... when I carefully listened to the intro vocals on the recordings I noticed that the Mac sounded more dry, but more focused and clear. When I first encounter MTM speaker TAD TSM300, yes it really solidify the voice like you said. But do you feel that the low bass seem lacking? Maybe because of the design ( normally the midrange driver is medium size), that did not help the extension of the lower frequency. Maybe that is just my feel.

Well the bass is adequate. If you want stronger bass, perhaps model with extra woofers is the solution? For example, acoustic AE520. You have the MTM configuration and then 23 extra woofers.

Hello Thomas I have them and they are incredible speakers for the money! And yes, they will scale with the quality of your electronics, as the people of What Hi-Fi said on their review, wich was one of the first ones made and I recomend reading. I also had a similar experience with my Line Magnetic LM-508 amp, eventhough the C500 are 6 ohm average and 4 ohm minimum, they sound considerably better on the 8 ohm biding post of my amp, much more alive. The C500 are incredibly transparent and they will show how good your electronics are.

@@jctai100 No; tube amplifiers which use output transformers have two or more output taps to match them up with speakers of different impedances. Due to the way a transformer works, the output tubes see the reflected load of the speaker via the transformer. Thus, the amount of power output and distortion for a given speaker load is different using different taps. You're unlikely to seriously damage an amplifier using the "wrong" outputs, but it can cause weird frequency response problems and reduce the life of the tubes. Your confusion likely comes from solid state amps that have a switch for 4 ohm speakers... It's just there to reduce the power output and prevent the amp from damaging itself into low loads. Generally best to keep it set to 8 ohms. With tube amps, I'd start with the output that matches the speaker impedance rating and then go ahead and try the others to see if it makes them sound better or worse.

I’ve seen a couple of your videos since with the Concept 500 speakers in the background. I have these, do you have any tips for people wanting to get the best out of these. I find these to be highly revealing without being highly resolving. I can hear definite changes in sound every time I change something in the chain. At the moment I am finding them a little bit too rolled off for my liking, have you made any tweaks that can get them closer to the analytical side? I have gotten better results with my Marantz Model 30 than my Yamaha A S-2200. Which amp and DAC would you recommend to move these closer to the analytical side?

Love how you described it, highly resolving without being highly revealing. Yes as I mention in some other videos, the concept 500 can sound dull sometimes with the wrong pairing. Perhaps try silver cables or use a brighter sounding DAC. Did you see my video on the stackaudio link 2 reclocker? You know there is a jumper at the back to make it sound brighter and it does not change much BUT I bet you if I open it up and change just one capacitor, it can make it shaper easily.

Thomas, another great review! Thank you for the effort. You've become soo natural doing them. 👌 Now, I believe that is only half of it you covered there, and a full other half is hidden somewhere else 😀!! If you think you may live with them and decide to keep them; I urge you to connect them using two pairs of QED Supremus speaker cables. Man, they add at least another hopping 20% over its performance!! It's all about synergy. You know they are sister companies. I think it is the prescription 💊 to make the speakers your next purchase. Think about it as you are using a pre/power combo of the same brand… Thanks again for your reviews!

I only heard it once at Centre Hifi, they actually invited me to go audition it. My issue was the bass was so strong that you might need room treatement and an amp that can control it to bring out the best of it. Keep in mind they had it close to a 'fake wall' in a middle of a 10000sqft show room. I remember the highs were not really bright. However, I really need to get it into my room to know forsure. The bass did gave me a bit of subwoofer feel and that is why I say you have to be careful with it. It was in this video. Jump to 8:24. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i76ngtmH1drdZI0.html

Unlike most technology, the target and way to hit it were arrived at a long time ago when it comes to transducers. The motion picture industry and the advent of talking pictures was the major diver. Bell Labs and Western Electric were at the forefront of research and had very large groups of scientists and engineers working on refining the accuracy of audio. Audiology was making discoveries, too, and these were applied to transducer and enclosure design. The motion picture industry, worldwide, was many times the market for that of home music systems, so a large amount of money was spent on it. Consequently, the improvements in audio have not been dramatic over the years, despite marketeers' best efforts. The requirements of human hearing have been around and well known for decades. To cut to the chase - recent efforts to make the "ideal" system have been reinventing the wheel, so to speak. The quality of low-cost speakers has been dramatically improved but at the top-end, where cost is no object, manufacturers have not made quantum leaps. In fact, the very best systems today emulate the giant horn-loaded theater speakers of yesterday. Efficiency inherent in these configurations keeps distortion low, whereas smaller, less efficient designs require large and costly power sources to achieve similar goals. My theater type speakers are a compromise for the home system, whereby you can have the sound pressure levels and dynamic range of a live performance without the expense of high-wattage amps and the thermal gain they produce in the listening area. I've arrived at this point, after first enjoying the RCA Victor talking machine from my grandparents' store starting in 1940. That was a lot of tonearm drops ago!
@TheDanEdwards
@TheDanEdwards 2 жыл бұрын
"In fact, the very best systems today emulate the giant horn-loaded theater speakers of yesterday. " - disagree. Theater horn speakers were (are) built to fill very large rooms with sound, to overwhelm the crowd's own sounds. Hence the efficiency. All loudspeakers are compromises, and so each design is a priority of what to compromise the most or the least. This is why there are different types of loudspeakers, and why different people gravitate to this or that design.

Thomas - I love your videos - but I have to ask, how do you hear so much more bass, when there is such a huge roll off starting at 200hz!? There's a 5 db drop between 200 to 100hz - and then another 6 db drop from 100 to 50. - That's 11db difference from 200 to 50hz based on the measurements you showed. And then, they sound best with 20k components? When, the speakers only cost 6k? I get your notion of these being high end - but given how poor they sounded with costs that people would usually put with a 6k speaker, are these really a solid recommendation? (or, are these speakers MASSIVELY underpriced?)

As a comparative nube to high-end audio, the thing that really freaks me out is a lot of the brands that get high ratings are ones I've never even heard of before. I mean if I wanted to buy a premium car, I know Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volvo etc are good cars and there is a lot of history and data to support my buying decision. Actually, in terms of money spent on research and development, Toyota Corporation spent the most for creating their new brand Lexus with the LS400 at $1 billion USD. That's about $2 billion today. It put Lexus in Number One spot in luxury cars within two years. My 24-year-old Lexus has never broken down on the road and drives like a new car to me. There are audio systems out there, not necessarily new brands, that will last as long as your hearing. Newest isn't always the best. Of course, vintage gear may require upgrading capacitors or wiring, but the older systems were built to last. Today's consumer is used to plastic stuff and thinks nothing of throwing away 'obsolete' technology. That's what marketing people want you to believe. Earth's landfills are full of "breakthrough, revolutionary products" which required lubrication with snake oil, but still failed miserably.

Not sure if it has the same effect if I were to get the C2700 + MC462 + Concept 500. Separately, as the combination is not cheap, I was thinking of first getting the MC462 which I will then use my M5si as pre. Was wondering if I could get your professional view on (a) whether what I have auditioned gives a good representation of C2700+MC462+Concept 500 and (b) whether it make sense to use my M5si as pre for the time being (as compared to using my Cambridge CXN V2).

Due to new moved flat the speakers are little too close to the wall (50cm) so bass is more but works fine for now ;) and the combo with Naim Uniti Atom is very smooth, rich with amazing soundstage & warm clarity. Thanks for your review again which Gave a great inside. 👍

I just think that the outer edges of the woofers should have been better integrated into the front panel.
