I am sending this message from Hiroshima, Japan. I used to use the Olympus E-M1 Mark II, but about a month ago I changed it to a new Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III. The lenses are OLYMPUS M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 300mm F4.0 IS PRO and OLYMPUS M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 45mm F1.8 [Black] I have an OLYMPUS M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 17mm F1.8 [Black] and an OLYMPUS M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 25mm F1.2 PRO. I really like this camera because it looks really cool.

Thanks for this video Joseph. I just ordered the Em1 mark iii and I'm super excited. I shoot with a Em5 mark ii and the upgrades in the Em1 look awesome. I'm a jack of all trades photographer and this camera is perfect for me. I can't wait to try out the eye and face af for taking pics of my family but I'm more excited for the hand held high res and built in ND filter. Badass camera!

Great video, having just upgraded to a Em1x for my professional portraiture work I’m also really hoping they add the em1 mk3 face and eye detect to a firmware upgrade on the Em1x too as I was torn between wanting the better eye and face detect but having the bigger body and better button layout of the 1x

Nice video as usually, Joseph. We have to mention here that, thanks to Olympus, we can have something approaching by just updating the cameras firmware like I did on my EM-1 II, Pen-F. And it worked even on my daughter’s EM-5 II

Thanks for the vid, Joseph! Your MIII enthusiasm is really contagious 😀 I am really considering upgrading now :) You might try to change how the autofocus area stays greenlit in the menu under A2 -> AF Area Pointer and set it to On2. That’s at lest how it works in the MII.

Nice video, and if this really is much better than the E-M1 Mark II it's a valid reason to consider the new one. One small suggestion: for the first few minutes of this video, I could have sworn you were talking about "phase detect" autofocus. Finally got "face detect" from context, but it needs better enunciation there.

Thanks Joe. Your videos are always so clear and helpful. I have not found a good enough reason to upgrade just yet, but this seems that it may be a strong one. Do you think it would work well with general sports photography? I have the same issue as you explained in that often as I am trying to keep the face in focus, I lose my composition or cut off the athlete’s feet. Do you have any experience with this with the Mark iii? Unfortunately there are few sporting events to experiment with lately. Stay healthy.

@ 12:50.. Excellent idea.. To change the face 'actively being traced' to (a shaded?) green, would be brilliant! There are too many flashing squares and dots as it is.. Much easier for the minds eye to quickly note the focused face, and move on to composition, etc..

So, if your target is far, it won't detect it unless you set the focus point manually to the target afar; correct?

So, now that my E-M1 Mark II also has phase-detect autofocus in video with current firmware, is it worth upgrading to the E-M1 Mark III? I really want an OM-1, but that's a lot more money. I've heard the audio preamps are better in the E-M1 Mark III, but are they so much better that it's worth upgrading? Have you had any audio issues with either camera? Is the ProRes RAW recording all that useful for a wedding shooter? The OM-1 has everything the E-M1 Mark III has PLUS 10-bit internal video and no recording limit, so that's extremely compelling. I'm just a hobbyist right now, but I've been thinking about picking up a gig here and there doing videography. I know the GH5 and GH6 are better video tools, but the lack of phase-detect autofocus in those cameras makes them questionable choices for someone like me, especially if I'm going to have an unmanned camera during a ceremony.

I hope so, I don't have EM1X, But I think the em1x should have best AF tracking on the line up , and I will consider to buy it if EM1X have new fw add all EM1 MK3 tracking mode and AI BIF

Thanks for the great video. I just bought an EM1X (waiting on FedEx to find my house, which is its own three beer story). Hopefully, this functionality shortly comes to the EM1X. Can the setup you described be set to the custom dial on the top of the camera. For example C1 is people, with all of the buttons programed as you have them; C2 is perhaps wildlife with the buttons setup for that genre, C3 landscape, etc. Thanks!

I doubt that that is possible, as the button function is set in the menu and is not normally changed on the fly while shooting. In addition, I feel that button function is something that needs to become very intuitive when shooting, and it would seem to me that changing button functions based on subject matter would be a functional nightmare. By the way, I hope the FedEx guy found your house -- enjoy that great new camera!

Thanks for this. Compared to the EM1X, is the face detect more accurate for faces in full length or slightly further away people? I found the X good for half length or closer, but for full length, even though the X indicated face detect focus, it often was slightly off.

Better at full length and much much better when tracking. At full length with a 25mm would say there’s 100% + improvement in speed and accuracy.

Backbutton-focus was good back in the day when cameras used to have only some focus points in the center because it made recomposing, which was a necessity due to the few focus points, much more convenient. With modern cameras you don't need to recompose anymore, because they have much more focus points covering nearly the whole screen. With backbutton-focus you introduce additional camera shake when pressing two buttons at once. I once was a bbf guy myself years ago, but now I don't use it anymore and will definitely not go back.

Back-button focus is handy in the following scenario: you want to pre-focus on an object in dim conditions and then shoot long(er) exposure. You light the object with a torch, acquire focus using the AEL/AFL lock button, switch off the torch, and hit the shutter button. If focus were assigned to the half-press of the shutter button, the camera would try to refocus and, given the dim conditions, it might either hunt and fail completely or focus on a different object. With BB focus, the shutter button performs just the shutter release function, which avoids triggering the focusing problem I've just described. Another way would be to use manual focus throughout, but the camera can do it faster and, in most cases, more accurately.

seems to me that your use of the lever wastes a great control device. I seem to recall that on one of your earlier videos you suggested using the lever to switch between video and stills.....that is very powerful and I like it. But more important (one could use the lever for other functions --- like on/off, etc) you could just use the BBF and push it on for C-AF and release it to achieve S-AF behavior. In other words: Leave the camera in C-AF; it will perform Continuous focus as long as the BBF is pushed. If you are satisfied with the focus and want to "lock" it, then simply release the BBF button, the camera will hold whatever focus it was in. This would free the lever for more interesting purposes. … BTW, have you tried to use a button re-program function (from B menus) to designate a button action to toggle between your current camera configuration and a custom function?.... Select any button you like, program it via the B menu to select a Cx function, and then, when shooting, you can very rapidly toggle back and forth between Cx settings and whatever you happen to be using at the moment..... :-) (The mark iii RULES...:-) )

Can you cannect you camera to your computer using Olympus capture and record the screen? It may not be perfect though could be OK for demo purposes.

Joe ..could you make a video about if and how you use exposure to the right for better color rendition . Is there a way to sét that into the camera . I have been asking the same question Yesterday Evening to Mark A on an expert E-M1X private question time ..and he was also curious about if mote Oly Visionairy's use the exposure to the right rule and how they implement it into theire workflow.

ok, face detection works better, but what's about Eye-Detetection and Eye-Tracking. With an f1.2 it is not enough to keep the "face" in Focus, whatever that means

Hello Joseph, it seams to me that you like the E-M1m3 more ... ? I feel that soon the E-M1X will be obsolete ? Anyway, I do a lot of landscape and architecture so this feature is not in big demand during my photography. I am looking forward to try the astro-photography, and focus on night sky will come very handy. Did you test this setting yet ????

Yes and no, the ergonomics, dual UHS II slots, battery system are all better on the 1x and that camera has just been so strong and reliable. This face detection is really the only advantage for the 1.3 in my work. A simple firmware update for the 1x and I’d be thrilled.

Can you compare the AF performance between EM1X and EM1 MK3? I'm an Olympus user, and I have EM1 MK3 already, I consider to buy EM1X to my main camera . Thanks your advice

Maybe I'll help you. For shooting people m1 iii is better. And size of course. I have M1 with me almost all the time, street photography, family events etc. I shoot car races, but now everything is canceled and I photograph people more often. That's why I sold m1x I know that the M1X will get new firmware, probably with eye detection as in m1miii and maybe bird detection .. I bought m1miii 2 weeks ago and I see that afc is faster than m1 mii. I don't see a difference compared to m1x. I tried them in bird photography. It is not easy and a lot depends on the settings, but I did not see the difference. Sometimes airplane detection works like bird detection. The only thing I miss in m1miii is the slot for 2 uhsii cards. When shooting races I need a deeper buffer, and the m1 is my second camera. I usually take risks and use one card or use uhs1 for jpg only. I recommend you two cards uhs2 transcend 700s and toshiba exeria. Transcend is cheap and equally good. Not all cards work so well with Olympus. AI autofocus is great, but few people are involved in racing so I wouldn't worry. I love m1miii. I love the face selection function. Most cameras lack this feature. I think only g9 has it. When you shoot events, it is essential. If you photograph people more often, and sometimes only wildlife, then better buy a second m1miii and save money. Also remember that the additional battery grip for the m1miii does not have a joystick.

Face tracking isn't really new. If memory serves, Olympus did introduce it first with its Stylus line, and others got onto the bandwagon quickly afterwards. Panasonic, Sony, Fujifilm had good implementations too, even refining the technology with eye AF. Most recently, Sony was regarded as having the best face-and-eye AF. But Canon trumps them all now with the machine learning AF + Dual Pixel in its flagship 1DX Mark III.

Maybe but they haven’t yet - 1x has the AI AF including birds, trains etc but not the upgraded face/eye detect

I love that the opening of this video talking about phase detection, focus tracking, etc and your face is out of focus the entire time makes me feel either very unconfident in the technology you're talking about or it's being shot by an Em1 mkii. lol

I recently sold my em1 Mark ii and upgraded to Canon FF. The weight is a substantial difference but the amount of detail and flexibility in raw files is just unbeatable. Also the DSLRs feel more robust and steady than small mft cameras. And build quality is better.

Sotiris Stefas I sold my Nikon FF and CPS gear and upgraded to Olympus M43 E M1 Mkii , the build quality is excellent, the weather sealing amazing and picture quantity is fantastic , I printed 3 A3 images , one from FF , one from CPS and one from Micro four thirds, you could not tell which one was from which camera 📷, the weight of CPS and FF gear is a deal breaker for me , I now have replaced 5 lenses with 3 , and can carry them in the same bag and not two , the size is also a positive , just because the gear is large doesn’t mean you’re going to get better quality, Olympus is the way to go , thanks , David Martin

At this time, upgrading would be the least of my worries. It’s survival that is foremost. What’s the use of upgrading if you won’t survive. Goodbye, cruel world.
