Hey I tried the shredders revenge on the rg353V but said it failed on the first load and backed me out of the port master game into the main menu what did I do wrong

Just a tip for you kids out there who wanna buy this. I got my Powkiddy X55 two weeks ago and it came with JELOS version 20230831. I immediately updated via WiFi to 20230919. Shortly after, I noticed that PS1 games had audio stutters all over the place except for light 2D PS1 titles. I tried everything including switching emulators but it didn't help. I also tried flashing 0919 to the SD card from scratch but it didn't help either. Then a KZfaqr (Jacek Rusin) who tests the X55 a lot helped me. After some futility, he said he's using 20230903. I tried that version and all the PS1 audio issues went away. Somewhere between firmware 0903 and 0919, something got messed up and it's killing PS1. So, if you get an X55, take note of this.

Just got my Powkiddy X55 and this thing is great! The JELOS user experience is amazingly good! Just want to note, mine game with the latest JELOS available when shipped (the 10162023 version). Also, because of the updates, the HDMI video out worked perfectly (it showed rotated at first, but then it "applied Powkiddy X55 quirks" and voila! it appeared as it should). pulled trigger on this handheld after this video. No regrets. Screen is super nice. Very surprised by how well the stereo sounded. recommend upgrading JELOS, as the default install boots at a snail pace. Once I got JELOS upgraded and configured, I was super impressed with this device for the price. As for the loud button sounds, small trade off for the good feel and feedback from the buttons. Unit does feel cheap upon initial use, but got over that after some use. Ergonomics are very good IMO. FYI i have larger hands. IMO to get such a large IPS screen @720p with surprising well sounding speakers out of the box at this price point makes this device a win in my book. Thanks for the recommendation, Russ!

Thanks Russ! Just placed my order. I love my RG353P, but really wish it had a larger screen and had small grips like the Steam Deck. This appears to fit the bill perfectly because it's the right price, and still uses JELOS.

I've embraced the fact that most of these handhelds are a compromise between getting 'newer' stuff working and therefore the need for widescreen, analogue sticks etc, and supporting 8/16 bit 4:3 stuff well. There are so many out there now I think more should embrace doing one or the other, rather than do it all. For now I've settled on a Miyoo Mini+ for D-Pad/4:3 goodness, and an RP3+ for PSP and so on.

Best RK3566 handheld on the market, bar none. Between its huge screen, excellent ergonomics, and solid buttons & sticks, it’s hard to believe the value on offer here for $90.

I was thinking the same until they used a stolen OS that made the boot time over a minute. I don’t get why these systems never can get a good OS out of the box instead of having people have to put custom OS on there. Even when using a good one they manage to screw it up.

Russ, great review as usual! I like the ergonomics on this system. It looks very comfortable. I also like the fact that it can play Dreamcast games. For me personally, I'm good with my Miyoo Mini + at the moment due to it's great portability. I will admit that for the price, this is probably the best in the category due to all of it's features. These handhelds are improving at such a rapid rate and I can't wait to see what 2024 has in store for us. Anyway, keep making these great reviews!

@@DarinMartin86 Honestly, I have not checked the card that came with the system. I purchased a blank 128 GB Micro SD card and only put games on the card from my collection. However, I hear those cards that come with it are pretty packed so I wouldn't be surprised if it was on there.

Every new device that comes out with this level chipset is just making me hungry for the next one to come along in a year or so that will have a chipset that can play the full ps2 library in this or the 405m form factor, for under $150. This looks like the king of under a hundred though. That's where my line in the sand is for an upgrade from my 35xx, every time I get tempted with the 405m or this (the 405m form factor looks like perfection as a pocketable) I just remind myself that the gba, snes and ps1 library is enough to last me for years on the 35xx, and the steam deck is happily playing tears of the kingdom and 3ds. I must resist.

A good Linux implementation like Jelos makes a huge difference. The device just doesn't have to cope with the huge overhead inherent in Android. It just plain works. 👍 If I was buying now it would be this definitely. Excellent handheld and excellent review. Thanks man.

True, but android devices usually have more power in their chip to cope with it. Android also comes with better battery management than Linux, that's why something like the RP3+ can last all day and night on a single charge despite having a more powerful chip. But I agree that as far as user experience and setup goes, custom Linux FW is the best by far. Android is just clunky to set up, and will always feel like a phone no matter what you do, even setting up a launcher and such.

Just ordered one through your link, used your code and it worked, grand total to the UK £67.86 using my credit card conversion rate. No brainer really as on Amazon UK they are going for £167. Not quite sure why I bought it as I have a Flip on the way and already own an RG503 and a Steam Deck, guess I just like shiny lol plus it's horses for courses. I will probably compare it to the RG and see which one I prefer and eBay the other. I plan on this and the deck for home use and the flip for travelling light, If I have the luggage allowance I normally take the Deck, but in the case I bought, with everything else it weighs over 5Kg. I'm not watching anymore of you videos as they cost me money :) Already subbed and liked. I really do like your videos on this subject and the website with extensive setup tutorials and emulator settings. Thank you.

I’ve had the Miyoo Mini + and I’ve played it daily. Its crazy a system that small can run PS1 games perfect and I’ve been playing tons of Pokémon Rom hacks also no issues

This is properly tempting. I was seriously eyeing the Miyoo Mini Plus before, but i think the screen on this one may just win me out. I'm once again holding out hope that someone will release something in this form factor, with a Linux OS, that can play PS2, but until that holy grail is released i can let myself be tempted by this beauty.

My holy grail is one that has a bigger screen that'll be about 4.5" when displaying 4:3 content, a fast SoC with Cortex A76 or better cores, ~4500mAh battery, Linux OS, and proper controls. I hope someone like Mediatek would step in. Their G90/95 is getting pretty old now but I imagine they would need great for emulation. Maybe they can sell them cheap to these retro companies...

I really like your reviews of cheaper devices, Russ. I love to see the beefy performance of high end portable PCs or mini PCs, but I don't have 450 dollars to throw around. When you review something under 100~150 dollars it's great for us who live in third world countries with worse economies. The only reason I wouldn't get this console is the analog stick on the top. I'm a stickler for retro=d-pad on top, so that's the only deal breaker.

Agree - I’d love a steam deck but that’s $800+ If I can run a decent amount of games on this and stream from my pc some other emulators plus steam - that’s a massive win at a much better price.

Are the OG psp 1st Gen with disc tray, would that be powerful enough for N64? It has Custom FW with roms but interested if I have any N64 titles. It's been a few years since I've messed with it. I review items for Amazon and get to keep what I review. I've got one of these powkiddy x55 in blue. It came preloaded with alot of ROMS out the box. Is that legal? Has Neo Geo, Capcom Play System 1 & 2, MAME, Arcade etc. That's what I'messed with so far. More to find a case for it. Good handheld imo.

I really like your contra and street fighter tests. I would really appreciate if besides testing shoryukens and hadokens you testes half circles, half circles + opposite direction and 360's. These kind of imputs are sooo common on SNK fighting games and in grapplers and i found them to be a harder precision test. I also think that alucard's spells in symphony of the night are a nice benchmark

@@RetroGameCorpsblazblue has a psp version and multiple of the characters in it have these inputs. Ragna the bloodedge has the half circle mentioned here and and he's immediately playable

@@RetroGameCorps Oh, you don't need to progress in SotN at all to do the spells. If you know the commands you can do them right away, so you can just google them. I personally like Strategy wiki a lot for checking move lists. My personal benchmark on SotN is Soul Steal, the half circle into opposite direction. dpads like this have a high change of making you hit a diagonal when closing the half circle. You can test half circle motions right away in 3rd strike, almost every character has one, but Chun li and Dudley have a half-circle forward and a half-circle back. Hugo has 2 360'S and a 720. I should mention that usually you don't really need to go all the way with 360's for them to register. Usually you only need to do 3/4 or 5/8 of a circle. Super street fighter 2 turbo also has some wacky commands. you can test tiger knee with sagat; cammie and fei long have a tilted half circle forward, balrog has some hold back into down forward moves and vega and guile's super move is hold down back, down forward, down, down back, up forward For snk games, in KoF 98 and 2002 you have tons of weird commands like forward into half circle forward; quarter circle into opposite direction half circle and double half circles. Ok I see your points, fair! The shoulders are just too loud for me. I'd also recommend the rk2023 V2 over this for better performance and aspect ratio (X55 has better aspect ratio for PSP & GBA though). Great review! 🐔 - Stubbs

Do we really need this aspect ratio on a rk3566? I am spending a lot of time on my RG353PS (I love it), and there are some PSP game not playable there, and from Russ' video here I think the additional gb of ram doesn't solve all the issues. Personally, I would go with a more powerful chipset for PSP, and for this reason I don't consider 16:9 a good match with any rk3566 device 🙂

@@Cloud28693it works well with gba though, is a good fit for streaming modern games, and also works for widescreen hacks. There are other good aspect ratios that could have worked like 3:2 or 5:3 like the rg552, but the wider screen helps the handheld become more versatile. And we already have a few solid 4:3 handhelds in the under $100 space so this powkiddy is a nice alternative.

Will be getting a gaming pc within the next couple months and wanted a cheap handheld that I could stream games to with moonlight, and this seems like a really great option. A couple questions though, is the screen a touch screen and does it work well with bluetooth headphones?

For me yes. I am playing def jam vandetta, NBA street vol 2, WWE day of reckoning 2, smackdown hctp, tekken 5, soulcalibur 2 full speed on retroid pocket 3 plus. You can't do that on x55 but it is great for the price...

I am not convinced about having a 16:9 screen on a rk3566: unless you want to play up to Dreamcast on a wide screen adaptation, the only reason to have that aspect ratio is to play PSP, but to really enjoy that console without messing around with settings, I would rather consider more powerful devices, like Retroid Pocket 3+ or RG505. With your discount code, Powkiddy X55 shipping to Italy is 104$, and I bought my RG353PS for 108$: I would actually prefer the latter because of build quality, ergonomics and aesthetics 🙂 Thank you for your super interesting videos Russ! Agreed, I picked up the RG353ps as well because I think a 4:3 screen makes way more sense for what you're able to play on this chipset

@@Mite000 If you use ArkOS (I do) you can enjoy some nice PSP games enjoyable even with a 4:3 screen, but basically it's a perfect device up to Dreamcast 🙂

I feel that PowKiddy and other companies like Anbernic were purposefully handicapping their products to sell incremental updates. But now that their real competition is companies like Valve and Asus selling a perfect solution you can buy once and emulate everything, that's no longer a viable model.

I guess we're not at a point yet where a sub $100 device can play all 90's stuff perfectly yet... Maybe 2024's when it finally happens. I like my Steam Deck but I use it less than expected. I want a small/light device with a bit more power.

A bit more power than Steam Deck? You'll be waiting for next gen maybe 2027. Nothing is actually better only different. Steamdeck is the most optimized and efficient. With its success maybe in a few years other companies will put in a similar effort or the Switch 2 will stop fighting jailbreaking to let the device be unlocked since Nintendo is missing out on all these hardware sales

I got this after watching this video and am pleased so far. the big screen. The d pad is a little stiff (difficult to do moves in Street fighter games) but that's a nitpick and everything else is great for what I need.

Most of the time these retro handhelds use recycled screens from other electronics. They don't produce the screens hence the "low" cost lol

My prayers are answered. I don't know if you'll remember our conversation, which started with I'm getting old and my thumbs hurt from using directional controllers and having to rapidly push buttons on the right, and my eyes can't see much on smaller screens, and that the only conclusion is a primarily stick based device with ergonomic bumps and a bigger screen that could play most of vintage games. Looks like this device is perfect for my needs.

I got a pack of 12 cheap and cheerful joycon thumb stick covers and even though it only raises them a couple of mm it makes them feel much better to me. They also fit with all the other retrohandhelds that use the same sticks, which unless I'm mistaken is all of them
