A Moonlighting English Teacher

What happens when a poetry nerd has the Hamilton soundtrack on repeat in his car for a year and then spends way too much time on a PowerPoint?
Here are my top-10 favorite lines of rap in Hamilton. I attempted to illustrate an analysis (through highlights) of their complex rhyme schemes and sound devices (e.g. internal rhyme, multisyllabic rhymes, assonance, consonance). Lin-Manuel Miranda is an absolute poetic genius.
Songs featured:
#1 - Alexander Hamilton
#2 and #3 - "My Shot"
#4 - "Farmer Refuted"
#5 - "Right Hand Man"
#6 - "Satisfied"
#7 - "Non-Stop"
#8 - "Cabinet Battle #1"
#9 - "Washington on Your Side"
#10 - "We Know"

Unrelated to rhymes: I love the prophetic nature of Hamilton: I am not throwing away my shot Choir: Just you wait especially in how it's turning his words against him. The "just you wait" line had the exact opposite meaning when it first appeared.

And in the finale, it's like Burr is pitting song against song: his 'wait for it' versus Hamilton's 'not throwing away my shot', but Hamilton decides to go with 'they'll tell the story of tonight' as his defining song instead, raising his pistol (and throwing away his shot) as he raises his arm singing "raise a glass to freedom". Burr realizes this too late and is left yelling just "wait!" He made it so he had only the one defining song, the one card to play, and he'd bet it all on which song, which expression of character and intent, defined Hamilton, but Hamilton had several to choose from and the wherewithal to self-reflect and reconsider.

Me, a non-english speaker who doesn't know anything about rhymes: haha pretty colored words
@arona6692
@arona6692 3 жыл бұрын
Well I don't speak english fluently but you don't really have to "learn" anything about rhymes to understand them, it just mean playing with the resemblance of the sonority's words. In this video same color = same sound. Also great poets or songwriters are playing with the meaning of the word as well : when two words or two sentences rhyme the human mind links them so poets/songwriters use this to compare two ideas, or to emphasize an idea or a feeling, sometimes just to be funny ! For example : - Burr, you disgust me :/ - Oh, so you've discussed me ;) (Really clever pun I love it : Burr toys with Angelica's words to pretend she meant something else entirely, and because the words are alike it is more easy to accept the idea that the meaning is alike too)

This one from Washington On Your Side is quite cool: "Every action has its equal, opposite reactions Thanks to Hamilton, our cabinet's fractured into factions Try not to crack under the stress, we’re breaking down like fractions We smack each other in the press, and we don’t print retractions I get no satisfaction witnessing his fits of passion The way he primps and preens and dresses like the pits of fashion Our poorest citizens, our farmers, live ration to ration As Wall Street robs ‘em blind in search of chips to cash in This prick is askin’ for someone to bring him to task Somebody gimme some dirt on this vacuous mass so we can at last unmask him I’ll pull the trigger on him, someone load the gun and cock it While we were all watching, he got Washington in his pocket"
