The vendors mentioned at the end of this video who were selling material from Saddle Mt. and Hampton Butte reached out to me and stated that it was actually from private property that is adjacent to the public land dig sites and not the public dig sites themselves. When asked to provide evidence to back up the statement that it came from private land they refused to offer any information to confirm their previous statements.

I agree. Rules are set for a reason. They know they are selling illegally and those who purchase from them and don’t know the rules are now guilty. Bad business. Thanks Jared for your honest opinion.

Hey, thanks for the shout out about my cases. Both of them were all Brazilian Agates. I noticed one of my cabs had fallen over from the heat as it was being held up by hot glue, so it must have gotten a little too much sun. If I had known you guys were coming, I would have made an extra trip to meet up with you. FYI the small slab at 29:39 was Llanite from Llano Texas. For 50 cents, you should have bought it. Oh, and I agree with your comments at the end about digging and selling material. It's is against the law and I will mention it to the club board at a future meeting.

Thank you for the tour of the show! I didn't get to go again, but for a good reason this year. The show was cool. The mineral specimens were pretty darn cool! And I agree with your anger about those that collect from BLM and then go and vend the stuff they got, with the intent of making money. It is illegal and wrong and as a vendor with that rock club, it makes the whole rock club look bad. I'm glad brought that up! Major kudos for all you do for the community, simple little things that help make contacts like sharing their cards. There is just so much going on there, from the walk in the woods to the mini stands for DnD. I was mostly surprised with the shine on the pyrite, those were blindingly shiny. The core you got was an amazing idea, not sure I understood the dye conversation, I have a few dyed stones but I'm not a big fan of it, but it doesn't offend me either. Integrity is not for everyone unfortunately. I was taught it's only illegal if you get caught, as a kid. As an adult it's an integrity check. I'll get belligerently political if I continue so, yeah them some nice rocks!

This is exactly why I enjoy your videos. The fun, love, passion, curiosity, and ethical aproach both of you have to this subject. Please keep it up.

Have you ever considered crossing the border for big shows? The big BC Lapidary society show is happening May 10-12. There's a camp ground right beside it (though I've heard many vendors who are there all weekend camp behind the big building it's held at! I'm not affiliated with it, I'm just a low-level volunteer:) I also appreciate hearing your thoughts as you go through the displays. Most people in my club just put their finished stuff in the cases with few labels, so I your comments make me feel validated that I put some "in progress" stones still on dops, and used slabs/rough as displays for finished jewelry made with that stone:)

I enjoyed that. Thanks. Why definitely! Items collected on BLM land is for personal use only, it is not for commercial use. And a reasonable amount for personal use is allowed, enough to sell isn't. Even collecting specificly to make jewelry to sell isn't allowed either. Obey the rules or they'll shut us hobbyists down too. Why do you have to ruin it for everybody? Are you getting so rich selling that it is worth ruining it for everyone? Definitely not!

That was a very nice show! Loved all the cool displays. Really cool lava bomb. I went to my local Wisconsin Geological Society rock show in Wauwatosa, Wi, this past weekend. It would be a sad comparison between these shows. Lots more vendors, displays, affordable stuff at the Portland show there. Bummer that slab broke. I'm sure you can still make some neat things with it. And I'd love to see a video on removing dye from agates. Thanks for sharing, Jared. I agree the club should do something about said vendors. I’m very curious on the selling of items. I totally agree that you shouldn’t rockhound for the sake of making a profit off your finds. If you have a claim on public land does that allow selling the items? There is a KZfaq couple that sells everything they find and they talk about putting a claim on all these areas. I don’t like the fact that people can “claim” an area and prevent people from enjoying public lands for their own profit. I understand mineral claims on rare minerals like gold, silver, lithium. But not claims on petrified wood or agates.

Yeah... every land manager I've read has the words "personal use" in their rules and that just about shoots down any argument. Those types of dealers have been at every show I've been to though.

So, About the "rant", I dont disagree on the legality of it, and I dont know that "Value added" would fly with rocks, tho I do think it has worked in case law in other areas, so it might. But I also do not 100% agree either. Since I didnt see how much material they had, I cant really say how I would feel about it, But I kinda look at it like this personally, If someone is in there with a Backhoe and a Dump truck hauling out tons and tons of material without a claim, THAT is what I personally would get angry about and consider illegal mining. But if its a guy with a pick axe and a back pack haulin out 30 or 40 lbs at a time, I have a real hard time getting mad about that. Especially without knowing WHY they were selling it, why they have not filed a claim,I know nothing about the claim process, or how much if anything it costs. I dont know the persons story, Did they fall on hard times and need money fast, was it greed motivated, did they have an unexpected expense pop up that they had to cover. Are they just trying to survive and feed their family? I do agree 100% that it is illegal tho. But the why matters, to me,if the dude is just out to make a quick buck, just for the sake of making a buck and using public land without a claim to elimiate overhead to make more profit, Yes I agree,He needs stopped. If it was someone that had a bunch of rocks they collected that were originally for personal use or personal collection and they fell on hard times or had a loved one fall ill, or some other unexpected expense that they were just trying to get quick cash to cover, I really would have a hard time getting angry about it. Part of why I tend to not get upset about it, could also be where I grew up and the Generation I grew up in (Gen X), we had an unspoken code,at least in my area,that unless you see a person or animal being physically harmed, you dont get involved and you mind your own business, if someone wants to break the law, that is between them and the cops, and its the cops job to catch them. Our general default was if no person or animal is being harmed, it aint my business, and if the cops bust them, that is on them.
