In this segment I continue the restoration, repair, and testing of my Rotel RX-1203 stereo receiver. This receiver was produced in 1977 during the time that many consider the golden age for 2 channel audio equipment. Maybe one of the most beautiful silver faced receivers ever made. This vintage audio receiver produces 120 watts per channel into 8 ohms which is more then enough power for most ears and speakers.

Awesome video. I spent some time refinishing all the covers on my gear in a 2K Black pearl. I also took the grab handles off and refinished them in a Xirallic silver to “mimic” the chrome effect... as you say good enough now for another 40 years...again great video..👍👍👍

Great video, Chris! Extremely helpful was the filter capacitor selection section. Recently changed them out on a Sony STR V5, and finding exact sized replacements was an issue. DK and Mouser were both out. And Sony used a solid copper bus bar to join them. Mounting them entailed joining them loosely then mounting them to the chassis. Luckily, the size was appropriate. If you get a chance to pick up a Sony in the STR V series, (5,6,7), I highly recommend it, but, be warned, they are heavily built. As far as the Rotel, nice kit, kinda higher end in the day, so not many available in my rural area. These days, they are very sought after though. Very clear, accurate and detailed sound to them. And Rotel seemed to pay more attention to the build details than others did. Again, great video, and thanks! 👍🏼

Another awesome restoration! As good if not better than new. Your videos are fascinating and have relit the fire I had for stereo equipment from the 60’s through the 80’s. I’ve dug out my mid 80’s Carver MXR-130 receiver and have found a local tech/restorer for a full “check up”. I just hope he’s as diligent as you Chris. I hope to be able to do this myself at some point. Thanks for the videos.

Great idea with the Mothers polish. There might be coatings on those faceplates, so carefully clean; you might want to wax after that for oxidation protection.

Just wondering, are you going to put out more videos? I really enjoy them. Because of you I have taken on a recap of my Carver ct-17. Probably not the best first attempt as there are hundreds of caps...lol. I also have 2 tfm-35's to do , a bryston 4b, Carver silver amazings, among some Hafler amps, Akai r2r and others. Yes, I'm an addict as well. Do you ever recap speaker crossovers? I'm also in your neck of the woods, Spring Hill, Fl. Love the vintage audio, got started when I was about 10 years old, and by 13 saved to get a Pioneer sx-3800. Things just escalated from there. Lol.

I have one of these beasts and its very well built. Recently the headphone socket has stopped working. Any pointers would be good. I am recovering from a severe stroke, so I am limited on much that I can do. But who knows, there may be a known fault with the headphone socket. Great set of videos, thanks for posting.

Could you direct me in the general direction...my receiver right channel sounds like a humming, popping, AM radio station off tune (or a Telsa coil). I took out the R- power transistors and checked them with DMM diode mode - seemed functional (first time doing this). Put it together, hooked up a speaker and burned the speaker up 😤. I believe low impedance initially wrecked the receiver; now that it's half way damaged, it's blowing speakers. I would appreciate the help. Kenwood KR-3090
@vintageaudioaddict
@vintageaudioaddict 3 жыл бұрын
Man, I'm so sorry about your problem. It's difficult to troubleshoot an issue like this via the internet but first don't hook up another pair of speakers to it. I'm sure you know that but I'm saying it anyway. Check the DC offset at the speaker outputs with a digital multimeter. If it blew your speakers there is a good chance there are several volts DC at the speaker outputs. The should be just a few millivolts. After that it's tracing the issue back with a schematic.
