Hi, that's a good question, but not one with a quick answer. They are very different cars, but I will do my best to summarise. The jag is incredible value, you get a lot of luxuries, toys and style for the money, they are great to drive too. Compared to the bmw its likely to be less reliable though. I didn't have any major problems with mine, but I always had that feeling that it could go wrong at any moment. Electrical gremlins are the issue. Sometimes mine would seem to bug out and reset very quickly when setting off. JLR isn't exactly famed for reliability. The 640d is my favourite car that I've ever owned. 2 main reasons - it looks incredible. I used to get kids pointing, many that didn't know too much about cars thought it was very special. The stance of the car is great, wide and low. The other reason is the drive, so fast and so agile for a big car. They pipe fake sound into the cabin so it also sounds great under acceleration. It's done so well though, passengers wouldn't know. Going from an XJ to the 640d I did miss a few luxuries that I'd gotten used to, like blind spot monitoring, keyless entry and auto boot. The drive more than compensated though, not that the XJ drove poorly, far from it. I guess in the end it comes down to what's more important to you. Drive or looks - BMW. Luxury and comfort - Jag. It depends on budget too, the 640d is more expensive so you'll have much more choice with the jag. A word of advice with both though, there's a lot that an optional extra, so spec will differ greatly, especially with the bmw. I've recently traded in the 640d, as I needed something more practical as I'm expecting a child in a week or so, the bmw was really quite low down. I might not have needed to change the jag in my situation as it's more practical. One thing I didn't like about either car though was the trade in value. The jag was 4 years old when I bought it, I sold it after 14 months losing £7500. I lost £5000 in 6 months on the bmw. It seems dealers look to make big margins on this style of car, and as it's hard to sell one privately you are kind of in a corner. I like to buy 4 to 5 year old cars to avoid large amounts of depreciation so wasn't happy with the trade in value on either car. Hope that helps you make your decision. @@motorshedsteve reply well appreciated, do you think the 3 litre diesel in the jag is fast enough? 6.4s to 60 I think? Especially compared to a 640d. I tested both breifly but I thought the 640d had more instant throttle response than the jag but the jag inside felt like a rolls Royce

The lag is a jag trait, the gearboxes are pretty poor, I used to get frustrated with it. BMW was near perfect though, never did anything I didn't want it to do. Althought the bmw felt a lot faster, the 3ltr diesel is fine in the XJ, never felt underpowered. I always hankered for the V8, but they are a lot more expensive and drink with 2 straws.

The 3 series coupe is now called the 4 series. Typically the even numbers are coupes and the odd numbers are saloons. However they do offer a 4 door in the 4 and 8 but they call them gran coupes.

Seriously, probably not comfortably, it's the sports seats that would spoil it for you. The other models in the range would be better, ones with less bolstering. I'm fairly wide though and found this to be okay. It's just with the height as well, best bet is to visit a showroom and have a sit in one.

Oh believe me new cars can creak, especially demo models. BMW are usually a pretty solid choice for creak-free driving anyway.

This has tinny cheap feeling doors. The german uri geller looking guy did the door test. A4 and C class much deeper thunks. Mate had one as a courtesy and i went to poke around it as I was considering one after b9 A4. Its just not as well put together. Its fresher and more modern but didnt feel as robust.
