8:55 Make sure you get EarPods and not AirPods or other Bluetooth headphones. Bluetooth headphones won’t work well for monitoring while overdubbing parts due to latency.

Does it matter if I get the Aux or USB-C version? I've found the USB-C version for slightly cheaper, and I can make it work.

What device are you connecting to? I haven’t tried USB-C headphones but I would expect any wired headphones should have low enough latency for audio production.

Just a quick line from a grateful parent for this fantastic video, especially the explanation at the end about the relative order in which to acquire equipment. We are a music family through and through...but analog! My son on the other hand is hugely interested in digital music production, and you gave me what I needed to help him get started.

One thing I have to say is don't always rush forward just because you have or got higher end equipment. Like when i got my MIDI controller (which happen to be an Arturia Minilab 3) it also came with higher end software like Ableton Live. But when I ended up actually trying to make a full track i gave up and went back to BandLab cause it was easier and didnt have to use as many externals.

I started out and am still operating cheap. I use my iPhone 13 with GarageBand, headphones and a korg nano keys 2. Only cost me about $80 for the korg, headphones, and usb adapter. I love your philosophy of getting your music out there and not letting the pursuit of perfection kill it. Keep up the great videos.

I loved your comment 'fight off the perfectionism' which put it so succintly for me! I started off with music production about 2 years ago with a windows laptop, akai mpk mini 3 and audio technica ath m30x headphones. I didn't start to record guitar and vox til later. Taetro, I don't much like listening to 'lofi' music, but I like making to it. You are awe-inspiring.

This video was extremely helpful, especially since I wasn't sure what to purchase for my setup as far as what was essential and what wasn't. This really explained what everything is meant for and how to build your setup based on how you produce. Since I won't be using any live instruments yet, I can build my gear accordingly. Thanks a ton for your tutorials and for this information!!

An Ipad is still where I create music. I have a lot of apps already, and getting the same level of software on a laptop would be very expensive. Also, I have found the Samson go mic a very easy to use usb mic that sounds better than decent, and can handle vocals and acoustic instruments. It doesn't need external power when used on an ipad or iphone, and that makes recording a lot more convenient. Great tutorial. BTW!

Video's good. If there's one thing I'd tell myself when I was just starting out is 'it's okay to be frustrated, if you don't get the sound you like. Just start with whatever you can, but practicing everyday would really get you far. I promise. Stick with what you're familiar with. Always fix the issue with what's feels like lacking, improve it day by day and then BAM, you wono't realize you're already there. I stand by using iPad but please, if you can- choose a software and master it.

I'm 27, play guitar for 15 years, but just got tired of playing covers and having to deal with band shenanigans, and the lack of people to play with where I live, so took out the Ableton minilab mk2 I got gathering dust for years and am starting to write, and what fun it's being. Just the part of the frustration, and the joy of getting something I was struggling to be like I want is being amazing, and this is being a very helpful video, thank you

I agree but one thing I notice everyone leaves out of the bare bones setup videos is a designated storage device. I’d definitely recommend either an external drive/ USB drive , etc… for keeping projects safe or a paid online cloud storage account… (ideally both!) although your computer tablet or phone has storage things happen! it’s always best practice to have a backup plan not to mention something you can bring with you or load up that’s secure for traveling and colabs! Aside from that I’m with you 100%

I love this! I have been holding off getting back into writing music for so many reasons (Dad of 2 boys, executive corporate job, insert other excuses here). I wrote music at a time when everything was analog - guitar, piano, cassette - just gave away my age right there. While I am versed with today's tech (PS5, ipad pros) i didn't know where to start - until today. I have an ipad pro, i have a kawaii digital grand piano, but will get a midi controller (eyeing akai based off of this video) and will just ket the music flow. Thank you!

As someone starting out, I was introduced the M-Audio products as they are very budget friendly. I picked up an M-Track Solo Interface (although they have a Duo version for multiple instrument input) as well as a Axiom Air 32 Mini, which has 32 keys, dials and pad bank (only thing missing is an input for a sustain pedal, although it has a toggle switch for this). I presently don't record vocal (too shy about my voice to record it) and record guitar by input rather than mic'd up, but I would look to get a mic next I think. I bought a cheap pair of Roland headphones which I think come with their keyboards. All of this cost me less than £100. I do own a 2019 Intel MacBook Pro, so I take advantage of Garage Band as my DAW, but having seen your recommendation for Band Lab, I might give that a go.

If owning only a pc or laptop there is a lot one can do also just playing around in ableton and with the free samples one can install which comes free with the program. Think they even offer the full program for free to try over 3 months with saving & rendering. With passion and creativity there will always be a way for the music to flow & the love for the craft is the limit, where one can always love deeper. 💜 take good care and let the caged bird fly.

I'm here because I don't know much about this tech and I want to learn but it's heartening to hear someone as young as you talking about how they are "blessed" to have what so many others do not. I think your generation is so much better than what those from mine give credit for. Every generation faces it's challenges, and certainly affordable housing is yours, but what I see from so many your age is a very healthy 30,000ft perspective.

Get the MPK mini plus instead as it has transport controls and a real mod wheel which is critical, and it's only slightly more. The ATH m50x headphones are a studio standard worldwide, I wouldn't say they are that basic, and I'd agree that they really are the right entry point for headphones. You can't fix what you can't hear and they have a pretty good faithful reproduction. They're also specifically a good choice because you can wear them for 8 hours without your ears getting sore. You can skip the Audio interface just by getting a USB mic like the m-Audio one unless you need to record instruments direct in like synths. And even then, for starting out, the line in isn't that bad. I even have tracks where somebody used the onboard mic on a pair of AirPods and with a little audio processing, once it's layered in - you can barely tell. If you have a fancy juicy Mogue synth, sure you want ever curve of that delicious analogue smoosh, but then you're not just starting out so... I'm not so sanguine about the software choice. I haven't had the best experiencing with editing software on a touch surface system personally. That might be the place I plunk down some cash an just get Logic Pro. Being able to effectively manipulate audio and midi really makes a massive difference in your ability to develop a fast smooth workflow which is crucial for an enjoyable experiencing making music. When things get in your way, it starts to degrade the vision you have in your head on how the song should hear, and you start thinking about annoying software instead, and you loose what you have in your mind's eye which can be frustrating.

Taetro this was great, thanks! I’ve got my digital gear set up now after about 40 years of learning and playing various acoustic instruments. Excited to start bringing the two worlds together!
