Marketing hype and lots of advertising does not make bearings faster, durable, or increase performance. Believe it or not, the best products are not always from top brands.
This video is about why Rat Vision chooses Oust Bearings above all other brands.
We chose Oust for many reasons, but to know why you must watch our other videos about ABEC, Swiss, and Ceramic bearings you'll discover what ABEC means, how tolerances are important, how "Swiss" is meaningless, and how ceramic is not good for skateboards.
• What is ABEC / Swiss /...
We also discuss how bearing loads effect performance in our video about Bearing Spacers.
• Fastest Skateboard Whe...
Axial Loads are forces applied from the side, or parallel to the axis of the bearing shaft and axis of rotation. In other simpler words, along the truck axle.
Torsional Loads are forces applied from angles that cause a twisting motion, which are against the axis of rotation. These forces come from any direction other than along the axis of rotation, or radially, which is perpendicular to the axis of rotation (axle).
Knowing how loads effect bearings, it educates us about how bearings will function while skating.
Just because a brands a lot of money on advertising and sponsoring (paying) big name pro skaters, it does not mean that their products are the best. What they may be the best at is branding, and not supplying the best products.
Branding is the ability to place a business, product, or service in the forefront of a consumer's mind.
When a brand name is at the top of your mind, you are more likely to make purchases from that brand.
Mercedes Benz is a very popular luxury car brand that is sold all over the world. However, Mercedes ranked #21 by Consumer Reports for 2015. This is a great example of how a popular brand can be perceived as being a top quality brand, when in reality it is not even close to the top.
Marketing hype, advertising, and branding have zero effect on how a product performs. What is printed in advertisements, or written on packaging, or said among friends, pros, and shop employees has NO effect on bearing speed, durability, and performance.
Slalom skating is most likely the genre of skateboarding that demands the most bearing performance.
To skaters outside of Slalom skating it may seem simple, or even stupid, to go down a hill a weave in and out of cones. How can slalom be the most demanding for bearing performance?
Simple. Slalom skaters need speed to reach the finish line first. Certain factors must apply to achieve high speeds. While skating in and out of cones the rider is constantly turning. Each turn applies axial and torsional loads that basically want the balls to roll out of the bearing raceways. During these loads high friction can occur that slow the bearings down and decrease the skaters overall speed.
In other words, the skater is constantly accelerating, slowing down, accelerating, slowing down, over and over.
To maintain high speed, by reducing friction, higher than standard materials must be used, tolerances must be adjusted, and load handling must be a factor.
Oust Bearings is the ONLY brand to actually maintain high speed, reduce friction, have tighter tolerances, better materials, and reduce axial and torsional loads.
Sure, Oust Bearings are not the top brand, sponsor the most popular pros, or have tons of advertisements.
BUT none of those things matter when you're skating.
Ads, popularity, branding, ABEC, Swiss, ceramic, skate ratings, 1 shield (or no shields), or popular pros have NOTHING to do with how well a product works.
If you think Bones bearing are better than all others because they are "skate rated", have you ever thought abut what skate rated actually means? Why is there no "rating" on Bones Bearings? It's probably because there is no Skate Rated thing does not exist!

I still have my first bearings Bones Reds and Speed Metal Wrecking Balls, both are still rolling after years of street shredding (note that I bought them second-hand from friends too). In my opinion, Rat Vision should post more videos about skateboard technology with depth. Bi-weekly reviews on individual bearings performance and other skateboard goods would be superb! Thanks for sharing the info, I appreciate your input greatly.

Lol, for some reason rush's seem like they would be good bearings, I'd try them anyways. Rush, Modus, Bronson, FKD, Yellow jackets, and maybe Ándale's( and now maybe Oust) are about the only bearings(other than bones of course) that I'd try. I actually have 2 sets of bones big balls that I haven't tried, as well as 1 set of FKD laser swiss bearings, and 1 set of magenta plant bearings (only decent set of yellow bearings I could find). Odd that I haven't tried any of them but just getting back into skating after 8 years(wow), so I have skate park board, and a street board, and another 7.75" complete that I need to sell lol, + 1 extra set of wheels with bearings.

+joe grey, I advertise some pro audio brands for they're outstanding, and THEN became friends with some people in them. Probably the same happened to Ben. People who advertise a brand that much, with that kind of explanation, really understand why that brand is good and are crazy on how people can't think and research before buying. The only people who advertise crappy stuff are, believe it or not, their Pro users (ironically whom people praise and believe eyes-closed).

I love these bearings. I actually watched this video in hope of exactly what it taught me! A bearing actually made to withstand the twist and tension skating puts on bearings! So I got a pair and living in California, I called the actual warehouse where they came from, and I met the owners son and his buddy/coworker and they had a tremendous warehouse setup where they made a lot of awesome stuff skate related there. And so far, the blue pack bearings I got, have been the absolute best bearings I’ve ever had in my whole skate life! I’ve used reds most of my life because they’re cheap and basically just disposable bearings that work long enough for what they cost. I used to break and pop soooo many godamn bearings and even got a pack of bones Swiss for my b-day when I was like 12 or 13 when I was all skinny and weighed probably 145 only and still busted the bones Swiss so I lost faith in all bearings until I watched this video. I’m glad I saw this and got myself a pair. I’ll ride these for life even though they’re not what all the pros recommend. I will say this though. My buddy let me ride his cruiser and he had Bronson’s on them, and they were fast as fuck! But, I guarantee they would break on me if I actually skated them as every other bearing brands have done on me. THESE BEARINGS ARE MADE TO TAKE THE TORQUE WE PUT ON BEARINGS PEOPLE!! GET A PAIR!! They’re rad! THEY WORK!! I use the blue moc 5 street bearings. Theywill last longer than Swiss bones! I bet a zillion bucks! If you’re a long boarder I would still recommend the oust street bearings because I feel they’re actually the strongest bearings you can get and they’re still fast AF.

You can usually find them from between $40-50. Worth every penny... IF... you have an application that they are suited for. Currently I'm doing quite a bit of experimentation with electric longboard wheel and bearing combinations. I'm finding that larger diameter wheels are ideal for both street compound solid wheels as well as all terrain tires that can go as large as 7-8 inches. These place incredible lateral loads on the bearings. Tolerances are critical both at the hub matching spacers to the actual internal hub space and making sure the bearings have tight tolerances so they can survive the lateral loads. I had a set of standard bearings (Actually 2 rear bearings started failing) on the AT wheels after about 40 miles. I upgraded to OUST Moc 9's for both the street wheels and the AT tires. I have since then put about 150 miles on the AT tires and a little over 200 miles on the OUST equipped street wheels. I'll see about doing a review of them soon. So far they are holding up fine.

Element bearings cost 10$, and they’re twice as fast as my reds. I just get the cheapest bearings, once you’re rolling your weight pushes the bearings forwards so it doesn’t matter what crapped out.

My friend and I had a long discussion about bearings a month ago. He worked at a skate shop (or somewhere that had bearings) and claims that he discovered the top brand-name skate bearings have a major flaw when compared to generic non-skate bearings. Supposedly, on the top skate bearings, there is a gap between the outer race and the shield (which he discovered when holding the bearing up to light) which would allow sand and water to get in more easily than the generic non-skate bearings which didn't noticeably have that (although some skaters prefer to remove the shields to get that loud- gritty sound older bearings make). He also mentioned something else that was very interesting about the metal balls inside the bearing. I'm sending this video and your ABEC video to him to see what he has to say! Also, I thought Oust was a type of air freshening spray.
@RatVision
@RatVision 8 жыл бұрын
+Anklepants Skate Zine Great comment! Yes, it's true some cheaper bearings tend to have larger gaps between the shield and inner ring. The shield should not touch the inner ring, just so you know. The reason some have bigger gaps (besides just bad sizing) is that the bearing have looser tolerances (more play). So, because the bearing rings have more play to move, when loads are applied the shield could hit the inner ring. That would be ridiculously bad. To prevent that, the shields are smaller (or have a bigger gap). So, it's not a "flaw". It just has to be done that way for cheap, loose, ABEC 1 or 3 rated bearings. Tighter tolerances from higher ABEC rated bearings will have smaller gaps. Rubber seals are much better at protecting bearings and keeping lubricants in.

I used to ride these bearings back when they were called tensor bearings, I remember them being a big deal when they were first coming out. From what I remember they were amazing at first but didn't last very long, They must have made some major improvements since then. This was a LONG time ago though, The ads in Transworld at the time made it seem like they were innovative from what I remember.

I'm absolutely done with Bones (no matter if Swiss made or not) cause they don't last me longer than maybe 2 month. Usually they are bad at arrival and really each bearing spins differently than the other - sometimes one or two are doomed from the beginning. I switched to Bronson Ceramics two years ago and I still love them. They are fast and they last.

I recently purchased the oust moc 5 street bearings and am worried about cleaning them since I just learned that the seal isn't removable. They have the little hole for lubricant and for cleaning but I'm worried about dirt and liquid getting trapped in them because I assume the little hole makes them harder to clean and after you do clean them wouldn't they rust easier due to not being able to air out properly? It'd be awesome if you guys could do a video specifically about this bearing and how to properly care for it as it's different from most other bearing on the market. Thanks for providing this valuable education!

what do u think about tensor 10's alum lows? please anwser
@RatVision
@RatVision 8 жыл бұрын
The trucks are fine. However, you have to decide why you want low. What is low going to do for you? If you want to go low, did you ever consider what your wheel diameter is? Are you aware that by going low and keeping the same diameter wheel that you will now change your pop? These are things you have to think about. Don't worry pros don't even think about it either. When you change diameter and truck height, you change the leverage from the tip of the tail to the ground. This affects how high the nose gets when the tail hits the ground. You might want to go with high trucks if you have a small diameter wheel. You just have to find what you like. There is no right or wrong way, but these questions and tips are great to have in mind when it comes to your own setup.
@TTURBOVOLVO

And what deck do you suggest is the strongest? include the impact boards and P2 if you want but i'm just looking at the normal 7 ply. Like is a board from Girl who is made in China going to weaker than a Baker made in Mexico? or is there no difference really when it comes to 7 ply? and how much does concave affect the strength of your board? does more concave make a deck more prone to snap?

Mhm...I think I'm gonna try Oust bearings somewhen. I've already ridden Seismic Tektons, which only have the benefit of the integrated spacer for me bones reds, which were very diappointing for their hype jucker hawaiis, standard, not bad, but not that awesome. JuJu bearings which work very good for me and some unbranded bearings that were called "Mach-1" which are neat for their low price and industrial bearing...kinda don't like the long break-in time..
@RatVision
@RatVision 8 жыл бұрын
+TastenKombination Break-in should only be about 15-25 hours of skating. Some people think it has to do with lubricant. It actually has to do with the contacting metal surfaces. Although the raceways and balls are polished to a mirror like surface, they are actually very rough and jagged. During the "break-in" period the balls are getting familiar with the raceways, and smoothing the surfaces of the balls and races even further. Just wanted to let you know what break-in actually means in case you didn't already.
@pgreg8528
@pgreg8528 8 жыл бұрын
Yes Yes I knew that, thanks anyway. :) I often hear some skaters say that bearings with thick lubricants take way longer to break in, I never really tested that even though I used industrial bearings. Like you said they probably took such a long time to break in because of the manufacturing. Love you videos btw! I was able to prove some points because of your knowledge!
@pgreg8528
@pgreg8528 8 жыл бұрын
Oh and to add to my last comment, the industrial bearings took way longer than the 25hours to break in, after that they worked fine, but it is annoying. I'd rather spend 15$ more for some better bearings. I'm excited for the Oust bearings
@RatVision
@RatVision 8 жыл бұрын
+TastenKombination lubricants will not effect break-in time. The important thing about lubricant during the break-in period is that they keep the bearing lubricated so the bearings can reach the end of the breakin period. That sounds pretty obvious, but the lubricant is just there to do it's job, and if it wasn't there the bearings may not even last long enough to break-in.
@RatVision
@RatVision 8 жыл бұрын
+TastenKombination You can't really feel or notice when bearings break-in. It's like watching a clock hour hand move. It's moving, but you can't tell it's moving. It's also not an exact time like an on and off switch. It's slow and gradual and the end of the period is about 15-25 hours of riding.

I've had 2 pairs of cheapshots. the first pair, when you spun it, it kept spinning and spinning and it was great. My 2nd pair were shitty. idk why. I thought maybe you had to break them in but I remember I didn't have to do that with my last ones. its weird. I used to always get basic Reds. and every now and then I would get a bad batch that was maybe oiled too much. Maybe it was like that with my 2nd pair. idk. My favorite are the Abec- I think 5s? the basic stainless steel ones that come with most arbor and sector 9 longboards.
