When Quincy Jones invited all those mega super star musical artists to participate in making this recording for a good cause, he specifically noted in the invitation "check your egos at the door". One superstar who was invited at the time failed to participate was Prince, because of a selfish personal reason. Another superstar who did not participate was Madonna, who would have a conflict with her scheduled concert date at the time of the recording session. Can you imagine what further impact on the recording should both Prince and Madonna contributed?

The message in this song is VERY timely right now. Seriously, ya'll, there's a lot us "boomers" don't get (like the latest cell phone or wireless ear buds) but we DID get some of the more important things we worked hard for since we were young: and that is that people need to work at getting along. There is no "agenda" here. It's just deciding to get along. No giving up of anyone's ideas, popular or not popular, you just love people, man! So glad you guys did this one.

Lionel Richie's voice like butter... This was truly a masterpiece, all of these spectacular people showed up only a few minutes to go over the script and get their turn and tune. Quincy Jones and MJ were able to get this group into one studio. Apparently, Quincy posted a sign on the studio door that said, "No Egos Allowed". When you see major stars like Bette Midler, Harry Belafonte and The Pointer Sisters, singing in the chorus, you know this was a powerful gathering.

"Please check your egos at the door." Prince was asked to participate by Lionel Ritchie. Prince asked if he could perform in a separate room, which Lionel couldn't do. @@ayaanbretmitchell9830 The rivalry between MJ and Prince is well documented, The one-off performance in 1983, however, between those 2 and James Brown was what really solidified his hatred of MJ. You are 100% correct when you say "the world stopped and listened". I was 20 years old in 1985 and an exchange student from England. A friend of mine and I were at a McDonalds in New York City, and we met a Canadian couple who had to go back to Toronto the next day. So they gave us a couple of tickets to the "Live Aid" concert at the JFK Stadium in Philadelphia, PA, which was taking place in a few days. My friend and I were not just appreciative, but blown away!! We took the Greyhound bus a couple of days later to Philly. I still remember the date: July 13th, 1985 (don't remember the day though). The JFK Stadium held around 100,000 people (it was demolished in 1992). When we got there, it was packed! They let us in the gates at around 5pm Eastern time. As the stadium was filling up, we could see the concert at Wembley Stadium in England on the big screen. It was amazing!! Freddie Mercury and Queen, Sir Elton John, Phil Collins and many more on the screen "live" from London. After about 4 hours, Sir Bob Geldof came on the screen and said "thank you Wembley, we now hand it over to Philadelphia, thank you!". And then before we knew it Lionel Richie stepped onto the stage, and all 100,000 of us went nuts! The highlight of the performances at the JFK Stadium, had to be Phil Collins - hands down. He was at Wembley Stadium, and performed "One more Night". So we saw him on the big screen. But unbeknown to us, he got on the supersonic "Concorde" plane, and flew to NYC (in 3 hours from London), and caught a private jet to Philly to be with us live. When he appeared on stage, most of us thought he was a "body double", as we had just seen him on the screen in London, 4 hours ago! It took us a couple of minutes to realize it was him on stage in front of us! He also mentioned he had a great flight on the Concorde. That's when we "got it" and believed. He played "In the Air Tonight". It was amazing, and an evening I will never forget. One of those moments, where the event was truly "lightning in a bottle". Lastly, a big thank you to Harry Belafonte and music manager Ken Kragen (RIP) who got all those artists (on the American side), for the "We Are The World" recording, and the Live Aid simulcast on July 13th, 1985 at the JFK Stadium. I am glad to have been a witness to musical history! Thanks for reading my post. Enjoy! Cheers, Sam.

I think modern times make the example for why; today's left is a whole new party of democrat, loaded with mass psychological problems and anti-American sentiment; they are destroying the country in real time. They push...no, "force"...a deranged and hateful ideology with a destructive marxist agenda. People can *feel* it. They are brainwashing and indoctrinating the countless who lack reason and education enough to have rational conversation about what is an overwhelming consensus, and lack an appreciation for the benefits we've all derived from a long-standing, broke but entirely fixable, system. Division is 100% necessary to save what this video represents. It's not about Trump, it's about America. And if something drastic doesn't stop what is happening soon, we will be living in a whole new country that will be a continuation of the massive downfall we are currently experiencing. And that will spread to the rest of the world.

@@terryspak5763 I agree. Trust me I'm politically aware. The biggest problem isn't the left though. It's the politically ignorant. Think about how many morons voted for biden. Then votes in a known racist who just cut over 90% of funding to HBCUs. People need to wake up and pay more attention to politics. After nearly 4 decades this song still brings me to tears. It was such a labor of love, but more than that it was SUCH an important project. In the mid-1980s a terrible famine was ravaging Ethiopia and people were dying by the thousands. By the time it finally ended over a million people had died. Those images, especially the ones of the sick and emaciated children, have never left me. It was absolutely heartbreaking. This project raised over $60 million for famine relief and this song is still earning money. I doubt we will ever see a collaboration of this magnitude again and I’m glad I was alive for it.

(Capitol or AnM, I cant remember?) and knocked it out in FIVE hours. It was Michaels idea and he was inspired by the UK song collab. He called Lionel Ritchie and they met at some restaurant , and thats where the actual documentary picks up. Michael already had most of the lyrics written when they got together. And then they called Stevie Wonder and met with him and he called Quincy Jones and thats how it all started. His Purpleness was invited, but declined, reasons unknown. When this song came out, I was in 5th grade and we sang it to our parents at a talent show. I was young, hopeful and felt the world was good.

It was a beautiful moment in our history...and every kid in chorus for the next few years had to song this song. 😆 I wanted to sing Cyndi Lauper's part! 😆 ❤️

Grew up when this song came out and it's still brings a tear to the eye. This was filmed backstage at an awards ceremony and thrown together that night. Song will always bring up memories. I couldn't imagine having all the greats in one room!! Everything was perfect!! Great reaction guys!!

I don't think that there was ever a point in history where more talent was collected in a single room than during the recording of that song. So many amazing artists.

Well Take a look at the UK hit 'Do they Know its Christmas Time' Feat. Bono, Phil Collins, Boy George, George Michael to name a few - if you hav'n't heard it give it a listen you might be pleasantly suprised.

I sang this for our country program in the sixth grade and it’s always been such a special song to me. They did a remake with more current artists for Haiti and it’s also worth a listen!
