I went with Javelin just because. Almost have her at retrofit and I started about 2 weeks ago. I oathed shortly after she reached max affinity and she's been in my mainline fleet ever since. Always so happy to see you.

Nimi, since she has good DPS, and very decent survivability with her retrofit.. It's sure to take an effort to retrofit her early in the game but the result is exceptional.👍🏼

Z23 just one glance and she gave off a tsundere vibe and that's all the reason i need.

I pick Laffey because she look the most appealing to me at that moment of decision. She is now level 120 and oath.

Based on skills and the way the game plays: 1-Laffey, her bullet hell is best for damage and breaking shields later. She has good base defences as well with 2nd best EVA and HP. Her damage is more about quantity, many many shells and VERY fast reload. She has the highest accuracy and reload with her skills buffing reload, FP and EVA. Has the barrage trigger number halved skill when fully limit broken so every 5 times the main gun us fired she barrages, with her great reload and major skill giving +200% reload for 10 seconds she does this often. 2-Z23, she has good base damage and her skills help that but when she misses it hurts a lot because her damage is more per shell with less accuracy. Highest HP but far less Evasion make her not as good a tank as the others. Her major skill is 100% crit rate for 10 seconds and her minor one is +60% FP every so often. So when they are up she hurts, but when they are not her damage drops a lot. Less shells fired also means shields hurt her damage greatly. Has same barrage skill as Laffey but worse reload means she will not barrage as often. 3-Javelin, she has the best EVA and her skill helps that, but least FP and HP of the three, she is torp focused which makes her damage very bursty. When her torps are up she is nasty, when they are not she is mediocre. She gets the +30% effect from AUX gear skill at full limit break however, so with her base 310 Evasion at lvl 125 you can give her HP gear to get an extra 300 or so to make her the best tank of the lot. *- Ayanami, she is the torp queen of the starters. Highest Torp stat by a mile but lowest FP stat means her torp and barrage damage are everything. She has the highest reload of the 4 but her FP is so low that it's only good to proc her barrage. 2nd lowest HP but 2nd highest EVA with an EVA buff on her Major skill maker her tanking ability not terrible. Because her limit break skill is about reducing the spread of her torps she needs 10 shots to proc her barrage, this ship is one of the few that you use a Blue rarity gun on to get most damage. The 76mm DD gun has the fastest reload in the game but basically no damage, perfect for a ship that does basically no shell damage and needs fast reload anyway. AL rewards short fights more than it does tanking for a long time. Because of that the above order is how it is. Laffey and Nimi (Z23) are very close in ability with Laffey pulling slightly ahead on average. Javelin is much worse than both of them however. Ayanami can be a beast with the right gear and setup, because she is IJN and they have a lot of Torp buffing ships, Ayamani is likely to be the ship you use for the longest time out of the 4 starters.

For me it was between Nimi and Laffey... However 3 years ago I resonated more with Laffey simply because at the time, it really didn't matter what it was. If it didn't hold my interest I was most likely going to fall asleep through it.

my starter was Laffey and I picked her almost 3 years ago out of instinct (I knew nothing about the game when I started playing) I picked Ayanami in my JP account :)

I pick laffey because she is have a goods stat but i have javelin i feel she is super energetic and she is always happy.

I couldn't pick Ayaya on EN which left me gutted. So I ended up with Javelin, who gave me a few giggles until I got my Kagerou in chapter 3 which is my unofficial starter that kept me accompanied.

I feel Javelin is the most balanced out of the four! I also ship them all together! XD

Nimi because when I was checking, her firepower was the strongest out of the 3 allowed. At the start of the game, I was like "Higher Firepower means faster clear".

my personal opinion(and bias lol) I have chosen Z23 twice in my Azur lane career(i lost my 1st account) due to her HP and damage capabilities(and after a few weeks of grinding, i also find her character very appealing to me) out of all the starters(without gears) Z23 would have the most amount of HP and raw damage capability with her gun however she sacrifices this for speed and torpedo damage(Z23 IS A GUNBOAT DD NOT A TORPEDO DD FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! DONT PUT TYPE 93 OXY TORPS ON Z23). Laffey, is a good all rounder, a jack of all trades but a master of non, highest AA stat cause she's an *AMERICAN* . nothing else has to be said about her. Javelin is the Budget version of Ayanami. out of all the starters, Javelin(not including Ayanami) has the highest speed, evasion and torpedo damage out of Z23 and laffy but she pays the price of shit HP, 2nd worst gun damage(like Ayanami, she's a torpedo DD, focusing on torp damage rather then gun damage). unless you have Oxy torps for Javelin to further increase her damage output, best option is either Laffey or Z23. the reason why I'm not talking about Ayanami is because i play on EN server so she's an unlockable. by the time you've gotten Ayanami, you would probably in chapter 6 onwards *[BIAS WARNING. THIS SECTION ONWARDS IN HEAVILY BIASED DONT BE MAD THIS IS MY PERSONAL OPINION, YOU ARE ENTITLED TO YOUR OWN! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED]* Character wise, I genuinely find Javelin annoying to deal with due to her high pitch voice, making her unbearable for me(its painful to listen to her okay get off my back already!). I also find Laffey lazy due to her personality, but at least she's alright to deal with. Ayanami is a gamer, just like myself after collage so there's nothing else that has to be said about a fellow gamer, and lastly Z23.. Calling me a Z23 simp would be a massive understatement(and I'm not ashamed of it). I absolutely love her personality(her VA fucking KILLED IT 15/10 on GOD), increasing her affection, she slowly opens up to you and giving you good personal advices. her oath skin is beautiful(I think I shed a tear once iirc...) and so is her oath skin expression are just...(okay you get the point). personal note: out of all the ships in the game, i have bought all of Z23's buyable skin during the black Friday sale of 2020 im just missing her teacher sensei skin which is annoying... not gonna lie, i think Nimi is also one of 3/4 reasons why i did very well for a major examination...and no this isnt a joke *Nimi's smile is just so goddamn pure i cant even...* (god I need tharepy...is this normal behavior?)
